Chapter 2 - The Mafia King in the Frozen Car

Mara Hayes did not sleep that night.
She tried.
For twenty minutes, she sat on the edge of Emma’s bed staring at the empty space beneath the blanket.
For another twenty minutes, she walked through every room in the apartment searching for something she had already searched for ten times.
A hidden note.
A forgotten message.
A clue she somehow missed.
Anything.
But there was nothing.
Only silence.
The kind of silence that felt like the world was holding its breath.
Emma’s stuffed rabbit sat against the pillow.
Her school backpack rested beside the desk.
A half-finished drawing remained on the table.
It was a picture of three people holding hands beneath a bright yellow sun.
Mara had asked her about it two days earlier.
“Who are they?”
Emma had smiled.
“That’s us.”
“You drew three people.”
Emma had looked down shyly.
“The third person is for when someone finds us.”
Mara remembered laughing.
She remembered thinking it was just a child’s imagination.
Now that drawing felt like a warning.
She grabbed her coat and rushed outside.
The snow had become heavier.
The city streets that were usually filled with noise were almost empty.
Blackwater was never truly quiet.
Not during the day.
Not at night.
But the storm had covered everything.
Every sound disappeared beneath the wind.
Mara walked back toward the Blackwater Grand Hotel.
The same place where her life had changed only hours earlier.
She didn’t know why she returned.
Maybe because fear made people search for answers in the places where they had been hurt.
Maybe because Elias had spent years working around that hotel.
Maybe because somewhere inside that building was the truth everyone wanted to kill her for finding.
The hotel stood tall against the storm.
A beautiful building.
Old money.
Expensive stone.
Golden lights glowing behind large windows.
The kind of place where powerful people came to pretend they had no secrets.
Mara stood across the street watching it.
She knew she couldn’t just walk inside.
Not after what happened.
Not after those men.
She needed a plan.
But plans required time.
And Emma didn’t have time.
A movement caught her attention.
A black SUV parked near the side entrance.
Two men stood beside it.
Watching.
Waiting.
Mara immediately stepped back into the shadows.
The same men.
The same people who had taken everything from her.
Her breathing became shallow.
Then she noticed something.
They weren’t watching the hotel.
They were watching the road.
Like they were waiting for someone else.
Mara stayed hidden.
And then she saw him.
A black car speeding through the snow.
Not a normal car.
Something expensive.
Something built for someone who expected the world to move out of his way.
The vehicle turned sharply.
Too sharply.
The driver lost control on the icy road.
The car crashed through a snowbank and disappeared down the mountain road outside the city.
The men beside the SUV immediately reacted.
One of them grabbed his phone.
“He’s here.”
Mara froze.
Who?
Who was here?
The answer came moments later.
The men got into the SUV and drove away.
Not toward the crashed vehicle.
Away from it.
Mara watched them disappear.
Something about that felt wrong.
Terribly wrong.
She waited.
Then she followed.
The mountain road outside Blackwater was almost impossible to navigate.
Snow covered everything.
The trees.
The signs.
The road itself.
The storm had turned the world into a white blur.
Mara drove carefully, keeping distance from the abandoned SUV tracks.
She didn’t know what she was looking for.
She only knew something about that car mattered.
Maybe it connected to Emma.
Maybe it connected to Elias.
Maybe it connected to the men who had destroyed her life.
After fifteen minutes, she saw the vehicle.
A black luxury car buried in snow.
The headlights were still on.
The engine was still running.
But nobody was moving.
Mara pulled over.
For a moment, she stayed inside her car.
Every instinct told her to leave.
This was dangerous.
Everything connected to Elias was dangerous.
But then she saw movement.
Inside the car.
Someone was alive.
Mara grabbed a flashlight and stepped into the storm.
The snow reached her knees.
The wind cut through her coat.
She moved closer.
The passenger window was cracked.
Inside was a man.
A man she immediately recognized.
Everyone in Blackwater knew his name.
Even people who pretended they didn’t.
Adrian Vale.
The Blackwater King.
The man who controlled half the city without ever holding a political position.
The man businessmen feared.
The man criminals obeyed.
The man newspapers called a monster.
Mara stared at him.
She had seen his picture before.
Usually surrounded by expensive cars, powerful people, and security.
But the man sitting in front of her looked nothing like that.
His expensive black suit was covered in snow.
Blood stained the side of his shirt.
His breathing was slow.
Weak.
He looked less like a king.
And more like a man who was about to die.
Mara stepped back.
She should leave.
She knew that.
A man like Adrian Vale didn’t end up stranded in the mountains by accident.
People around him didn’t have normal problems.
They had wars.
Enemies.
Bodies.
Secrets.
Then she heard something.
A weak sound.
A voice.
“Help…”
Mara looked through the window again.
His eyes opened.
For a second, their eyes met.
Even injured, there was something terrifying about him.
Authority.
Control.
A lifetime of making people obey.
“Who are you?” he asked.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Mara almost laughed.
“You’re asking me?”
His expression changed slightly.
Confusion.
Maybe because nobody spoke to him that way.
“I need to get you out.”
“I don’t need help.”
The answer came instantly.
Even dying, he still sounded like a man giving orders.
Mara stared at him.
“You’re bleeding.”
“I’ve survived worse.”
“Not if you stay here.”
He tried to move.
Pain crossed his face.
Only for a second.
But Mara saw it.
The pain of a man who refused to admit weakness.
“You’re Adrian Vale,” she said.
His eyes narrowed.
“And you are?”
Mara hesitated.
She should lie.
She should walk away.
But she thought about Emma.
She thought about the men who knew her name.
She thought about the fact that every powerful person in Blackwater seemed connected.
“Mara Hayes.”
The change was immediate.
Small.
Almost invisible.
But she saw it.
Recognition.
“You’re Elias Hayes’ wife.”
Mara stepped back.
“How do you know my husband?”
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
“That’s complicated.”
“Everything tonight is complicated.”
The snow became heavier.
The storm was getting worse.
Mara looked toward the road.
Then back at him.
She hated that she already knew what she was going to do.
Because helping him was dangerous.
But leaving him was impossible.
She opened the driver’s door.
“Move.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“You’re putting me in your car?”
“Yes.”
“You know who I am?”
“Yes.”
“And you’re still helping me?”
Mara looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m helping myself.”
He watched her carefully.
“What does that mean?”
“It means everyone who wanted you dead tonight is probably connected to whoever took my daughter.”
For the first time, Adrian Vale looked genuinely surprised.
“Your daughter?”
Mara opened the passenger door.
“My seven-year-old daughter is missing.”
The mafia king stared at her.
The storm continued around them.
For years, Adrian Vale had believed he understood people.
Money.
Fear.
Power.
Those were the things that moved the world.
But this woman standing in front of him was different.
She was exhausted.
Terrified.
Broken.
And still willing to walk into danger.
For a child.
“Get in,” Mara said.
Adrian almost smiled.
“You give orders often?”
“Only to men who are too stubborn to realize they’re dying.”
A strange silence passed between them.
Then, slowly, Adrian moved.
Not because he had to.
Because something about her voice made him listen.
Mara helped him into the passenger seat.
The moment the door closed, the outside world became distant.
Warm air filled the car.
Snow covered the windows.
For a few seconds, they were trapped together.
A widow searching for her missing daughter.
And the most feared man in Blackwater fighting to stay alive.
Neither of them knew it yet.
But the storm had not brought them together by accident.
Someone had started a war.
Someone had taken Emma.
Someone had buried Elias Hayes’ secret.
And now two people who should have been enemies were sitting in the same car.
One woman with nothing left to lose.
May you like
And one mafia king who had never needed anyone.
Until tonight.
