Chapter 2 - The Voice Hidden Inside The Broken Phone

The room had never been this quiet.

Not even during funerals.

Not even during the moments when the Moretti family had gathered to discuss enemies, losses, and betrayals.

Silence inside the mansion usually meant control.

But this silence was different.

This silence meant everyone had heard something they were never supposed to hear.

Dominic Moretti stood frozen beside the black marble table, the cracked pink phone still playing the damaged recording in his hand.

The voice coming from the speaker was barely clear.

Static swallowed parts of it.

The sound faded in and out like a memory trying to escape from a locked room.

But Dominic did not need perfect audio.

He did not need anyone to confirm what his instincts had already told him.

That was Alessandro.

His brother.

His voice.

His warning.

“Clara…”

The recording continued.

“If Dom signs the trust papers…”

A loud burst of static interrupted the sentence.

Then silence.

The phone screen went dark.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Dominic slowly lowered the phone.

His eyes remained fixed on the device.

For six months, he had forced himself to accept Alessandro’s death.

He had forced himself to believe the reports.

The police statements.

The investigators.

The endless explanations from people who always seemed too eager to close the case.

But now his dead brother’s voice had returned from a broken phone carried by a little girl.

And it had returned at the exact moment he was about to sign documents controlling the future of the Moretti empire.

That was not a coincidence.

Dominic had survived his entire life by understanding one rule.

There were no accidents when powerful people stood to gain something.

“Play it again.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Everyone in the room knew that tone.

Dominic was not angry yet.

Anger was loud.

This was something colder.

Victor Moretti immediately stepped forward.

“Dom, this is absurd.”

Dominic did not look at him.

“Play it again.”

The second command carried more weight.

Lily looked up at him, holding her stuffed lamb against her chest.

She did not understand the power of the moment.

She only understood that the adults around her were suddenly scared.

Dominic handed the phone carefully to Silas.

The old butler accepted it with both hands.

The recording started again.

Static.

A faint breath.

Then Alessandro’s voice.

“Clara…”

Every person in the room reacted differently.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Vivien’s fingers gripped the edge of her dress.

Silas closed his eyes briefly.

But Dominic noticed.

He noticed everything.

The recording continued.

“If Dom signs the trust papers…”

Static.

The same place.

The same interruption.

Dominic looked at the phone.

“Why does it stop there?”

Silas examined the device.

“It appears damaged, sir.”

“Damaged?”

Dominic turned.

The butler nodded.

“The file may have been corrupted.”

Victor quickly spoke.

“Exactly. Which means we cannot know what it actually says.”

Dominic looked at him.

A long silence followed.

Victor shifted slightly.

It was a small movement.

Almost invisible.

But Dominic had spent years studying people who lied for a living.

And Victor had just revealed something.

He was not confused.

He was afraid.

“Uncle Victor.”

The older man forced a smile.

“Yes?”

“How did you know the recording was incomplete?”

The smile disappeared.

For the first time that evening, Victor had no immediate answer.

“I assumed.”

Dominic leaned back slightly.

“You assumed?”

“Yes.”

“Interesting.”

The word hung in the air.

Vivien quickly stepped between them.

“Dominic, everyone is exhausted. This could be a misunderstanding. Alessandro’s voice on an old phone doesn’t prove anything.”

Dominic turned toward her.

“You’re right.”

She relaxed slightly.

Then he continued.

“It proves nothing yet.”

The emphasis on the last word made her expression change.

Yet.

Dominic looked back at Lily.

The little girl stood quietly near the table.

She looked nervous now.

Not because of the recording.

Because everyone was looking at her.

Dominic crouched down so they were at eye level.

“Lily.”

She looked at him.

“Where did you get this phone?”

“My mommy kept it.”

“When?”

The little girl thought for a moment.

“Before she went away.”

“Did she tell you anything about it?”

Lily nodded.

“She said it was important.”

“What else?”

The child looked around the room.

Then she lowered her voice.

“She said bad people were looking for it.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Dominic stood slowly.

The atmosphere changed.

Silas looked down.

Victor immediately became defensive.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

Dominic ignored him.

“Who was looking for it, Lily?”

The little girl shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

She hugged her stuffed lamb tighter.

“Mommy said I was too little.”

Dominic stared at the phone.

Clara Bennett had known something.

Something dangerous enough that she hid evidence with her daughter.

Something connected to Alessandro.

Something connected to the trust papers.

A memory surfaced.

Six months earlier.

The night before Alessandro died.

His brother had called him.

Dominic remembered the conversation.

At the time, he thought Alessandro sounded tired.

Distracted.

Almost afraid.

“Dom, promise me something.”

“What?”

“If something happens, don’t trust the people who tell you everything is fine.”

Dominic had laughed.

“Alessandro, you sound paranoid.”

His brother had been silent.

Then he said something Dominic never forgot.

“Sometimes paranoia is just the truth arriving early.”

The next morning, Alessandro was dead.

Dominic had spent months wishing he had listened.

Now he wondered if he had finally started listening too late.

“Where is Clara?” Dominic asked.

Nobody answered.

His eyes moved across the room.

Victor.

Vivien.

Silas.

Everyone suddenly looked like they were carrying a secret.

“Where is Clara Bennett?”

Victor sighed.

“Dom, she left.”

“Why?”

“She quit.”

“Why?”

Victor’s patience started disappearing.

“Because employees leave.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Not employees who secretly record messages from my dead brother.”

Nobody spoke.

The fire in the fireplace cracked loudly.

A reminder that time was still moving.

Dominic picked up the trust papers from the table.

The documents he was supposed to sign.

The documents everyone wanted completed tonight.

He flipped through the pages.

Nothing unusual.

Everything looked legal.

Everything looked clean.

And that was exactly what worried him.

The most dangerous traps were never ugly.

They were beautiful.

They were polished.

They were placed in front of you with a pen beside them.

“Silas.”

“Yes, Mr. Moretti.”

“Find everything we have on Clara Bennett.”

Victor immediately interrupted.

“Dom—”

“Everything.”

Dominic’s voice sharpened.

“Employment records. Addresses. Payments. Communications. Every document.”

Silas nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Victor stepped forward.

“You are making a mistake.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But I have made worse mistakes by trusting the wrong people.”

Vivien stood.

“Dominic, you’re letting a child’s story influence you.”

Dominic turned toward her.

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“I’m letting my brother’s voice influence me.”

Vivien went silent.

That was the first moment Dominic saw real fear in her eyes.

Not concern.

Not confusion.

Fear.

The kind of fear someone had when they realized a secret was no longer buried.

Dominic noticed.

And he remembered.

Everything.

The way she had encouraged him to sign.

The way Victor rushed the papers.

The way everyone wanted tonight to end.

Too many pieces.

Not enough answers.

He walked toward the window overlooking the city.

Thousands of lights filled the darkness outside.

A city built on secrets.

A city where everyone had something to hide.

Behind him, Lily quietly spoke.

“Mr. Dominic?”

He turned.

“Yes?”

The little girl looked at the phone.

“There is another thing.”

Nobody moved.

Dominic walked back.

“What thing?”

Lily pressed a small button on the side of the phone.

A hidden folder appeared.

Dominic stared.

Silas stared.

Victor stopped breathing for a second.

Because the file was not part of the damaged recording.

It was something else.

A second audio file.

Created on a different date.

The name appeared on the screen.

One word.

“Tomorrow.”

Dominic felt his heartbeat slow.

Not because he was calm.

Because every instinct inside him was warning him.

The first recording had been a warning from the past.

This one…

was waiting for the future.

“Play it,” Dominic said.

Lily looked at him.

Then pressed the button.

The room filled with static.

A few seconds passed.

Then Alessandro’s voice returned.

But this time…

he sounded different.

More urgent.

More afraid.

“Dom…”

A pause.

“If you are hearing this, it means they already know.”

Dominic’s expression changed.

The recording continued.

“Do not sign anything.”

The entire room froze.

“Do not trust Victor.”

Victor’s face turned pale.

“And whatever happens…”

Static swallowed the next words.

Dominic stepped closer to the phone.

Everyone listened.

Then Alessandro’s final sentence came through clearly.

“Your family is not protecting you. They are preparing to take everything from you.”

The recording stopped.

May you like

And for the first time in six months…

Dominic Moretti believed his brother’s death was not an accident.
