Chapter 6 - The Key My Father Left Behind

The key was in Marco Vieri’s hand.

The same hand that had held a gun beside me for twelve years.

The same hand that had signed documents for my father.

The same hand I trusted more than anyone alive.

Now it was holding the one thing my father had hidden from me.

I stared at it.

Then I looked at Marco.

Neither of us spoke.

Because sometimes silence reveals more than words.

"Alessandro."

His voice sounded the same.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

That was what bothered me most.

After everything I had discovered, I expected him to look guilty.

Afraid.

Defensive.

But Marco looked exactly like the man who had stood beside me all these years.

And that made him more dangerous.

"Where did you get that?"

My voice was cold.

Marco looked at the key.

Then at Isabella.

Then at Emma.

His expression changed slightly.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

He knew.

He knew exactly who they were.

My chest tightened.

"You knew she was alive."

It wasn't a question.

Marco didn't answer immediately.

That was enough.

I stepped forward.

"You knew."

"Alessandro..."

"No."

My voice cut through the room.

"Do not say my name like nothing happened."

The air became heavy.

Emma moved closer to Isabella.

She didn't understand everything.

But she understood enough.

She understood that the adults around her were carrying pain.

Marco noticed her.

His expression softened.

For a second, he looked less like my father's right hand.

More like a man who had been carrying a burden for too long.

"She looks like him."

I froze.

"What?"

Marco looked at Emma.

"She has Luciano's eyes."

The words made my anger rise.

"Do not talk about my father like you protected him."

Marco looked back at me.

"I did protect him."

"By letting me believe he was dead?"

His face changed.

A small crack.

The first sign of emotion.

"Because he asked me to."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

Marco stepped into the office.

He closed the door behind him.

A simple action.

But I noticed.

He wasn't trying to hide from me.

He was trying to protect the conversation.

"There are things your father knew that you didn't."

I laughed quietly.

"Apparently there are things everyone knew that I didn't."

Marco accepted the anger.

He deserved it.

"Your father discovered someone was moving against the family."

"I know."

"No."

He shook his head.

"You don't."

He placed the key on my father's desk.

"This was never about money."

I looked at the key.

"Then what was it about?"

Marco looked at Isabella.

Then at Emma.

"Legacy."

The word felt wrong.

Too simple.

Too clean.

"Someone wanted control."

Marco nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

Silence.

Again.

Everyone had the same reaction.

Nobody wanted to say the name.

That meant they already knew it.

"Marco."

He looked at me.

"The person who betrayed your father..."

He stopped.

Then said:

"Was the person who helped you take his place."

The room went completely silent.

I felt something inside me break.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

Someone who had guided me after my father's death.

Someone who had helped stabilize the family.

Someone who had been beside me when I became the head of the Moretti organization.

My stomach tightened.

"You're talking about someone in my inner circle."

Marco didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

"Who?"

His eyes moved toward the desk.

Toward the old photograph of my father.

"He wanted to tell you himself."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Marco took a breath.

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out another envelope.

Older than the one Isabella had shown me.

Different handwriting.

My father's.

"This was supposed to reach you when the time was right."

I took it.

My fingers felt heavy.

"Why didn't it?"

Marco looked away.

"Because the person who was supposed to deliver it disappeared."

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

No explanation.

No long message.

Just a list.

Five names.

The first four were familiar.

Family members.

Trusted people.

People who had worked beside my father.

Then I saw the fifth name.

My eyes stopped.

Because it belonged to someone I had never suspected.

Someone I had protected.

Someone I had defended.

Someone who had been beside me the entire time.

My breathing changed.

Marco watched my reaction.

"You understand now."

I looked at him.

"No."

My voice was quiet.

"I understand that someone betrayed my father."

I folded the paper.

"But I don't understand why."

Marco's expression became darker.

"Because your father found something."

"What?"

"He found proof that someone had been building a second empire inside the Moretti family."

I stared.

"A second empire?"

"Using your name."

The anger returned.

Someone had used my family.

My reputation.

My people.

Everything.

"Where is the proof?"

Marco looked at the key.

"Behind the second door."

I looked at him.

"What second door?"

"The one your father built beneath this house."

For a moment, nobody moved.

My father's house.

My entire childhood.

A place where I had spent thousands of hours.

And there was something underneath it.

Something hidden.

Something even I didn't know existed.

"You expect me to believe there is a secret room under my own home?"

Marco looked at me.

"Your father expected you to find it."

"Why?"

"Because he knew one day you would stop trusting everyone."

The words bothered me.

Because my father knew me.

Maybe better than anyone.

And maybe he knew exactly what would happen.

He knew betrayal would eventually force me to search for answers.

Isabella stepped closer.

"Alessandro."

I looked at her.

"Your father wasn't hiding things from you because he didn't trust you."

She paused.

"He was hiding them because he was trying to keep you alive."

I looked at Emma.

My daughter.

The reason all of this started.

The reason the past had returned.

The reason my father's secrets had surfaced.

Then I heard it.

A sound.

From somewhere inside the house.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

Marco's hand moved immediately toward his weapon.

I noticed.

Because Marco never reached for his weapon unless he knew something was wrong.

"What was that?"

Nobody answered.

Then another sound.

A footstep.

Below us.

Not upstairs.

Not outside.

Underneath the office.

I looked at the floor.

Marco's face changed.

"Impossible."

"What?"

He didn't answer.

He walked toward the old bookshelf.

His hand moved behind it.

Then he pressed something hidden.

A mechanism clicked.

The bookshelf slowly moved.

Behind it was a narrow staircase descending into darkness.

My father's secret room.

The one nobody knew existed.

I stepped closer.

Then my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

A photograph.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

The picture showed the hidden staircase.

Taken from inside.

Someone was already down there.

Below the image were four words.

May you like

"Your father is waiting."

And then the lights inside the secret passage turned on.
