Chapter 6 - The Senator's Name

Bruno heard his own voice coming from Elena's recorder.
“Move her tonight. Austin can never know.”
No one spoke.
Bruno stared at the device.
“That isn't what you think.”
Austin raised his gun.
“Then tell me what it is.”
Bruno looked at Jacey standing near Rosa.
“Not here.”
“Now.”
Bruno exhaled.
“I helped move Elena.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
“You told me you knew nothing about her relocation.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Because your father made me promise.”
Austin stared.
“My father was dead.”
“He left instructions.”
Bruno explained that his own father had worked for Vale, but secretly passed information to Austin's father. After both men died, Bruno inherited one responsibility: protect Elena's identity if the Bullard prosecution ever collapsed.
The recording was genuine.
But incomplete.
Bruno asked Austin to continue playing it.
The next sentence came.
“Move her tonight. Austin can never know where. If he knows, Vale will get it out of him by taking someone Austin loves.”
Austin lowered the gun slightly.
Bruno looked at him.
“I protected her from you because she asked me to.”
Jacey said, “Mom trusted him.”
Austin looked at her.
“How do you know?”
“She called him Uncle B.”
Bruno's eyes filled unexpectedly.
Austin lowered the weapon.
“Next time, lead with that.”
“There shouldn't be a next time.”
“There always is.”
Judge Bell spread Elena's documents across the library table.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Senator Charles Whitmore.
For fifteen years, Whitmore had built a national reputation around anti-trafficking legislation.
According to Elena's records, companies controlled by his donors had quietly provided shipping access to the very network he publicly condemned.
Marcus looked disgusted.
“He built his career pretending to fight them.”
Judge Bell nodded.
“And Vale built the infrastructure.”
Austin looked at the harbor coordinates.
“Tonight.”
Bell frowned.
“What?”
“Vale told us to bring the drive to the harbor.”
“You don't have it.”
“No.”
Austin looked at Jacey.
“But he thinks we do.”
At 11:40 p.m., Austin entered Boston Harbor carrying an empty flash drive.
Marcus and Bruno positioned themselves nearby.
Jacey remained at the mansion with Rosa and eight guards.
Austin hated leaving her.
He hated bringing her more.
Vale appeared between two containers.
“Where is it?”
Austin held up the drive.
“Elena first.”
Vale smiled.
A van door opened.
Elena was pushed out.
Austin's entire body went still.
She looked thinner.
Bruised.
Her hair was tangled.
But when she saw him, something passed across her face that six years had not erased.
“Austin.”
He wanted to go to her.
He didn't.
“Let her walk.”
Vale nodded.
Elena began moving.
Halfway between them, Vale said, “Stop.”
She stopped.
“The drive.”
Austin threw it.
Vale caught it.
A man inserted it into a laptop.
His expression changed.
“Empty.”
Gunfire erupted.
Austin pulled Elena behind a container.
Marcus fired from above.
Bruno drove an SUV through the gate.
Vale's men scattered.
Austin grabbed Elena's face.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Can you run?”
“Yes.”
He almost kissed her.
There was no time.
They ran.
A bullet struck the container beside them.
Elena stumbled.
Austin caught her.
They reached Bruno's vehicle.
Marcus jumped in seconds later.
“Go!”
Bruno accelerated.
Elena looked around.
“Jacey?”
“Safe.”
She closed her eyes.
For the first time, she cried.
Austin took her hand.
Neither spoke.
When they reached the mansion, Jacey ran down the staircase.
“Mom!”
Elena fell to her knees.
Jacey crashed into her arms.
Austin turned away, giving them something close to privacy.
Then Jacey grabbed his hand too.
She pulled.
Austin resisted for half a second.
Then allowed himself to kneel beside them.
Elena looked at him over Jacey's shoulder.
“You found out.”
Austin nodded.
“She's mine.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Elena touched Jacey's hair.
“Because Whitmore knew your father had discovered the network. I thought if anyone learned she was yours, she'd become the easiest way to control you.”
Austin looked at Jacey.
“And now?”
“Now they know.”
A phone rang.
Judge Bell answered.
Her face changed.
“What happened?”
She turned on the television.
Breaking news.
Senator Charles Whitmore stood before reporters.
He announced that authorities had uncovered evidence connecting organized crime boss Austin Cole to a major trafficking operation.
Photographs appeared.
Austin.
Elena.
Shipping containers.
Fabricated documents.
Whitmore looked directly into the camera.
Then he said the sentence that changed everything.
“Tonight, federal authorities are executing a warrant for the arrest of Austin Cole.”
Sirens sounded beyond the mansion gates.
Austin looked toward the windows.

Red and blue lights flooded the marble foyer.
And someone inside the house unlocked the front door.
