THE LIE OUTSIDE THE ICU / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Name He Stole

Ethan stared through the glass.

Samuel saw Sophia pointing at him.

His expression changed.

Then he ran.

Ethan was through the door before Mercer could react.

“Stop!”

Samuel disappeared into the stairwell.

Ethan followed.

Two floors down, Samuel shoved through an exit.

By the time Ethan reached the parking structure, he was gone.

Ortiz arrived minutes later.

“Who is he?”

Sophia provided the answer.

The real Samuel Brennan had worked briefly for Carter Construction.

He had died fourteen months earlier.

The man carrying Samuel's name was actually Thomas Reed, a former company accountant.

Thomas had helped Sophia investigate Vale.

“Why lie to me?” Ethan asked.

“Because Mercer thought Thomas was dead too.”

Sophia explained that Thomas had discovered the shell accounts first. Vale threatened him. Thomas disappeared voluntarily and lived off-grid while collecting evidence.

“So he's helping us?”

Sophia hesitated.

“I think so.”

“That's not comforting.”

“He saved me.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“After Dad chased Vale, Mercer came inside.”

There it was.

The missing piece.

Sophia remembered Mercer entering through the rear door.

He demanded the evidence.

When she refused, the confrontation escalated.

Thomas had been watching from the neighboring property.

He entered after Mercer fled.

He found Sophia unconscious and called Richard back.

“Then why the alley?”

“Mercer called Dad.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“He threatened you.”

Richard had made the worst decision of his life because he believed a lie would keep Ethan alive.

Ethan couldn't forgive it yet.

But he finally understood it.

Mercer was detained for questioning.

Still, the evidence remained circumstantial.

Then Thomas contacted Ethan.

A meeting.

Public place.

Police nearby.

Thomas arrived looking exhausted.

“My name really is Thomas Reed.”

“I figured.”

“I couldn't tell you.”

“You could've started with not using a dead man's name.”

Thomas accepted that.

Then he handed Ethan a key.

“Safe-deposit box.”

“What's inside?”

“Everything Sophia couldn't hide at the house.”

The box contained ledgers, recordings and contracts.

Enough to establish a financial conspiracy.

But not enough to prove who attacked Sophia.

Mercer continued insisting he had merely visited after receiving a frightened call from Richard.

Then Ethan found one audio file.

Mercer's voice.

“You should've stayed out of this, Sophia.”

Sophia answered:

“Ethan trusted you.”

“He trusted the uniform.”

“You used him.”

“I used access.”

A crash followed.

Then Sophia screamed.

The recording stopped.

Ortiz listened twice.

“This gets us closer.”

“Closer?”

“It proves confrontation. Not necessarily the injuries.”

Ethan hated legal precision.

But he understood why it mattered.

They needed the truth, not merely someone to blame.

Thomas revealed one more fact.

There had been a camera in Ethan's kitchen.

A small security camera Sophia had installed after she began feeling watched.

“Where?”

“Above the pantry.”

Ethan remembered the empty screw holes.

Someone had removed it.

“Who?”

Thomas didn't know.

But the camera uploaded clips automatically.

“To what?”

“Sophia's private cloud.”

Sophia couldn't remember the password.

Ethan could.

Their anniversary.

Wrong.

Her mother's birthday.

Wrong.

Then he remembered the lighthouse.

The date carved into their time capsule.

The account opened.

Hundreds of clips.

Most ordinary.

Sophia cooking.

Sophia reading.

The empty kitchen.

Then the night of the attack.

10:57 p.m.

Sophia entered.

11:31.

Richard arrived.

11:38.

Vale entered through the back door.

The confrontation began.

Vale grabbed Sophia's wrist.

She shoved him away.

Richard returned from another room.

Vale ran.

Richard chased him.

Sophia stood alone.

Thirty seconds later, Mercer entered.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

Mercer and Sophia argued.

No audio.

Mercer moved closer.

Sophia backed away.

He reached for her.

She pushed him.

Then—

The video froze.

“Why?”

Ortiz checked.

“Missing segment.”

“How much?”

“Nine minutes.”

When the video resumed, Sophia lay on the floor.

Thomas entered.

Richard returned moments later.

Nine minutes.

Someone had deleted exactly nine minutes.

Only the account owner could delete remotely.

Sophia had not.

Unless someone had her password.

Ethan looked at the login history.

One device had accessed the cloud that night.

A device registered to Ethan Walker.

His old laptop.

The laptop he had left at home.

Sophia stared at him.

“That computer was in our bedroom.”

Ethan remembered something.

When he came home, the laptop was gone.

Then his phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

His missing laptop sat on a table.

Beside it was a handwritten note.

COME GET THE NINE MINUTES.

The address beneath it belonged to Richard Carter.
