Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Knew My Daughter

“She wasn’t supposed to know you existed.”

I replayed Chloe’s words over and over again.

Even after she fell asleep.

Even after I left her room.

Even after I stood alone in the dark hallway, staring at the closed door between my bedroom and my daughter’s room.

Those words followed me.

They didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t make sense.

Because I knew who I was.

I was Chloe’s mother.

I had been there from the beginning.

I was there when she took her first breath.

I was there when she said her first word.

I was there when she cried through the night because she was afraid of thunderstorms.

I was there for every fever, every birthday, every scraped knee, every impossible question.

So what did Chloe mean?

Who was this woman?

And why did she say she knew my daughter’s “real story”?

I walked back into our bedroom.

Ryan was lying in bed, facing away from me.

Normally, I would have climbed in beside him.

Normally, I would have reached for his hand.

That night, I stood there for several seconds, wondering if the man sleeping beside me was the same man I had trusted for years.

“Ryan.”

He didn’t move.

“I know you’re awake.”

A few seconds passed.

Then he slowly turned around.

“What happened?”

I looked at him.

“Who is she?”

His expression changed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

A tiny reaction.

But enough.

“You know who I’m talking about.”

Ryan sat up.

“Emma…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I need the truth.”

He looked exhausted.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

He didn’t answer.

“That’s the problem, Ryan. You always say that. You were going to tell me. You were going to explain. You were going to handle it.”

My voice cracked.

“But somehow, I’m always the last person who knows.”

He looked down.

For the first time in our marriage, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.

“I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

“Stop saying that.”

He looked up.

“Why?”

“Because protecting someone and hiding something from them are not the same thing.”

Silence filled the room.

I waited.

Finally, Ryan spoke.

“Her name is Laura Bennett.”

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Laura Bennett?”

Ryan swallowed.

“She’s someone from my past.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Your past?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of past?”

He looked away.

And that scared me.

Because Ryan had always been honest about his life.

At least, I thought he had.

“I knew her before we met.”

I stared at him.

“Before we met?”

“Yes.”

“How much before?”

“A few months.”

“And you never mentioned her?”

“There was nothing to mention.”

I almost smiled.

Not because I believed him.

Because I couldn’t believe those words were coming from him.

“There was nothing to mention, but she knew our daughter?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

That reaction answered the question before he did.

“Ryan.”

He took a deep breath.

“I need you to understand something.”

“I’m trying.”

“Before you and I met, my life was different.”

“Everyone’s life was different before they meet someone.”

“I know.”

“Then tell me.”

He stayed quiet.

And then he said:

“Laura was someone I knew during a difficult time.”

“What difficult time?”

He looked at me.

“The time when I thought I might never have a family.”

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan stood up and walked toward the window.

“I was twenty-two. I was lost. I was making bad decisions.”

“What kind of decisions?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

“Ryan.”

“I was involved in something I shouldn’t have been involved in.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

I stared at him.

“Something illegal?”

“No.”

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“Not like that.”

“Then what?”

He turned around.

“I don’t know how to explain it.”

“Try.”

He ran his hand through his hair.

“I met Laura through a medical program.”

I frowned.

“What kind of program?”

“A research program.”

The word sounded strange.

Cold.

“Research?”

“Yes.”

“What does this have to do with Chloe?”

Ryan looked toward the floor.

And then he said something that made my entire body go still.

“Laura knew about our fertility problems.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She knew we were struggling.”

“How?”

“Because she worked with a doctor who was helping people with fertility issues.”

My mind raced.

I remembered those years.

The appointments.

The tests.

The disappointment.

The moments when we thought becoming parents might never happen.

“Ryan…”

“I didn’t think it mattered.”

“You didn’t think it mattered that another woman from your past knew about our private medical information?”

“I was desperate.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I wanted a child so badly, Emma.”

That hurt.

Because I knew that feeling.

I had felt it too.

But something still didn’t add up.

“What did Laura have to do with Chloe?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I knew.

There was something bigger.

Something he was still holding back.

“What are you not telling me?”

He looked at me.

“I met Laura again six months ago.”

My heart sank.

“Six months ago?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t want to scare you.”

“Why would seeing someone from your past scare me?”

“Because she came back with information.”

The room became silent.

“What information?”

Ryan looked toward the hallway.

Toward Chloe’s room.

Then he whispered:

“She claimed she knew something about Chloe.”

I felt dizzy.

“What kind of something?”

Ryan sat down slowly.

“She said there were things about Chloe’s birth that I didn’t know.”

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying…”

He stopped.

Like even saying the words was difficult.

“I’m saying Laura believes Chloe’s medical history has missing information.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Emma.”

“No.”

My voice became louder.

“You’re telling me some woman appeared after seven years and suddenly knows something about our daughter?”

“I didn’t believe her.”

“Then why did you take Chloe to see her?”

That question hit him.

He looked away.

“I wanted to know if she was telling the truth.”

“And you thought the right thing to do was bring our daughter without telling me?”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

The answer came instantly.

He looked at me.

I had never seen him look so defeated.

“I was wrong.”

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But beneath the anger was something worse.

Fear.

Because now I knew there was a secret.

Not just a hidden location.

Not just a receipt.

Not just a conversation.

A secret connected to the first day of my daughter’s life.

The next morning, I did something I never thought I would do.

I searched through the old boxes in the closet.

The ones we hadn’t opened in years.

Baby clothes.

Hospital bracelets.

Photographs.

Memories.

I found the box labeled:

Chloe — First Year

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were pictures.

Notes.

Medical papers.

Everything from the beginning.

I looked through every document.

Everything seemed normal.

Until I found something I had never seen before.

A paper folded between two hospital records.

It wasn’t part of Chloe’s file.

It had no official stamp.

No explanation.

Only one sentence written at the top.

Confidential Consultation Report.

My heart started racing.

I unfolded it.

The first line made my hands go cold.

Patient information regarding infant Chloe Carter.

But the date…

The date was from the week after Chloe was born.

I kept reading.

And then I saw a name.

Laura Bennett.

My breathing stopped.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Laura wasn’t someone who appeared out of nowhere.

She had been connected to Chloe from the beginning.

Before I knew her.

Before Ryan told me.

Before I ever had a reason to question anything.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Ryan was standing in the doorway.

His face changed when he saw the paper in my hands.

Neither of us spoke.

Because we both knew.

The truth was no longer hidden.

It was sitting between us.

And whatever was written inside that report…

Was about to change everything I believed about my family.
