Chapter 6 - The Family That Built the Lie

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The words hung in the air.

The doctor who diagnosed your infertility had a connection to Luke.

I stared at Doctor Bennett.

My mind refused to accept it.

Another lie.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life that Luke had taken from me.

“How?”

My voice barely came out.

Doctor Bennett sat beside the bed.

“We are still investigating the full extent of it.”

Emma looked angry.

“What does that mean?”

The doctor opened the file.

“It means the doctor who made the diagnosis was not independent.”

My hands became cold.

“What does that mean?”

Doctor Bennett looked at me carefully.

“It means there were financial connections between that doctor and a company owned by Luke’s family.”

The room became silent.

Luke’s family.

I remembered the first time I met them.

The expensive house.

The perfect smiles.

The way everyone spoke about reputation.

Family image.

Success.

Luke always told me that his family name mattered.

That people respected them.

That I was lucky to become part of their world.

At the time, I thought it was something beautiful.

Now I wondered how much of that world was built on secrets.

“Are you saying my infertility diagnosis was fake?”

Doctor Bennett shook her head slightly.

“We don’t know yet if the diagnosis itself was completely false.”

She paused.

“But we know the process was compromised.”

Emma looked confused.

“Why would someone do that?”

I didn’t answer.

Because deep down...

I already knew.

Doctor Bennett looked at me.

“Caroline, what did Luke want more than anything?”

My throat tightened.

“A son.”

The doctor nodded.

“Did he ever pressure you because of that?”

A bitter smile appeared on my face.

Pressure.

That word felt too small.

“He blamed me.”

I looked down.

“He said I wasn’t a real woman if I couldn’t give him a boy.”

Emma’s expression broke.

“He said that?”

I nodded.

“Every time we lost a pregnancy, he became worse.”

The room became quiet.

I remembered those nights.

The nights after another loss.

The empty nursery.

The tiny clothes we never used.

The names we never got to say.

Luke standing there.

Cold.

Disappointed.

Like I had failed an assignment.

Doctor Bennett continued.

“Did he ever mention adoption?”

I looked up.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

I closed my eyes.

“He said he didn’t want another person’s child.”

My stomach turned.

“He said his bloodline mattered.”

Doctor Bennett exchanged a look with the officer.

“What?”

The officer stepped forward.

“We found something in Luke’s financial records.”

My heart raced.

“What?”

“Payments.”

“To who?”

The officer looked at the file.

“The doctor who diagnosed you.”

Emma covered her mouth.

“No.”

“Yes.”

The officer continued.

“The payments started shortly before your first infertility diagnosis.”

I felt dizzy.

All those years.

All those appointments.

All those moments where I sat in a doctor’s office waiting for someone to tell me what was wrong with my body.

And all along...

Someone had been controlling the answer.

I looked at my hands.

“How could I not see it?”

Emma immediately grabbed my hand.

“Caroline.”

“I should have known.”

“No.”

Her voice became firm.

“You were manipulated.”

I shook my head.

“I trusted him.”

“That is not a crime.”

Her words stopped me.

Because I had spent years punishing myself for trusting the wrong person.

But trust wasn’t weakness.

Someone abusing it was.

The door suddenly opened.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Doctor Bennett?”

She looked concerned.

“There is a visitor asking to speak with Caroline.”

Everyone became tense.

“Who?”

The nurse hesitated.

“Luke’s mother.”

My heart dropped.

I hadn’t seen Margaret Carter since the day before my wedding.

Back then, she had hugged me.

She had told me:

“You’re exactly what this family needed.”

I believed her.

I believed everyone.

The nurse asked:

“Should I let her in?”

I looked at Emma.

She looked back at me.

A silent question.

Do you want this?

I took a breath.

“Yes.”

A few minutes later, Margaret entered.

She looked elegant.

Perfect hair.

Expensive coat.

The same woman who always seemed impossible to break.

But today...

Something was different.

She looked tired.

She looked afraid.

She walked toward me slowly.

“Caroline.”

I didn’t respond.

She stopped.

“I know you don’t want to see me.”

“That’s true.”

My answer surprised even me.

Years ago, I would have apologized.

Not anymore.

Margaret looked down.

“I deserve that.”

Emma stood beside me.

“Why are you here?”

Margaret looked at the officer.

Then Doctor Bennett.

Then me.

“I need to tell you the truth.”

My heart beat faster.

“What truth?”

She sat down.

“The truth about Luke.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What about him?”

Margaret took a deep breath.

“Luke was never supposed to marry you.”

The words made no sense.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“His father had a plan.”

I frowned.

“A plan?”

“To protect the family name.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“And Caroline was part of that plan?”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

She closed her eyes.

“When Luke married you, his father believed you would be the perfect wife.”

Perfect wife.

The phrase sounded horrible now.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret whispered:

“Someone quiet.”

Silence.

“Someone easy to control.”

The room went still.

I felt tears forming.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I finally understood.

Luke didn’t choose me because he loved me.

He chose me because he thought I would obey.

Margaret continued.

“When you became pregnant, everything changed.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“He became obsessed with having a son.”

My breathing slowed.

“He believed a son would secure his place in the family.”

Doctor Bennett asked:

“And the pregnancy losses?”

Margaret looked away.

“I knew something was wrong.”

My heart stopped.

“You knew?”

She started crying.

“I suspected.”

Anger rose inside me.

“You suspected?”

My voice became stronger.

“You suspected my husband was hurting me and you did nothing?”

Margaret looked broken.

“I was afraid.”

I stared at her.

Afraid.

That word.

Everyone was afraid.

I was afraid.

My sister was afraid.

Everyone was afraid of Luke.

And because everyone was afraid...

I suffered.

Margaret whispered:

“I should have protected you.”

I looked away.

Because part of me wanted to hate her.

But another part understood.

Fear could trap people.

Just like Luke trapped me.

The officer asked:

“Mrs. Carter, do you have evidence?”

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I kept something.”

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“I didn’t know when I would have the courage to use it.”

She handed it to Doctor Bennett.

The doctor opened it.

Inside was a document.

Then another.

Then a photograph.

Doctor Bennett’s face changed.

“What is this?”

Margaret looked at me.

“The original medical report.”

My heartbeat stopped.

“The one Luke never wanted you to see.”

Doctor Bennett read the page.

Her expression became serious.

Then she looked at me.

“Caroline…”

“What?”

She took a breath.

“The original report says something completely different.”

My fingers tightened around the blanket.

“What does it say?”

Doctor Bennett looked at the paper.

“It says you were healthy.”

Nobody moved.

“It says you had no fertility problems.”

My vision blurred.

All those years.

All that pain.

All that blame.

It was never my body.

It was never me.

Doctor Bennett continued:

“And there is a note written at the bottom.”

She looked at the handwriting.

“What note?”

A pause.

Then:

“Do not disclose this information to the patient.”

The room became silent.

Emma whispered:

“Who wrote that?”

Doctor Bennett looked at the signature.

And my blood turned cold.

Because the person who wrote it...

was someone I knew.

Someone Luke trusted.

Someone who had been close to our family for years.

Doctor Bennett slowly said the name.

“Richard Carter.”

Luke’s father.

And suddenly, I understood.

Luke didn’t create this alone.

The lie was bigger than him.

It was a family secret.

May you like

And now...

The entire Carter empire was about to fall.
