Chapter 5 - The Gift of Beginning Again

One year after that fateful Christmas Eve, snow was falling once again over Old Town Alexandria.

The townhouse on the corner was filled with light, laughter, and the mouth-watering scent of roasting turkey and cinnamon apple pie. Inside, a grand spruce tree stood in the living room, adorned with handmade ornaments, sparkling golden lights, and a silver star at the top.

A toddler with thick dark hair and bright blue eyes was giggling hysterically as he tottered across the rug on unsteady legs. Leo, now a vibrant, chubby one-year-old, pushed a wooden toy train toward the fireplace, babbling happily in his own toddler language.

Everett sat on the rug beside him, catching the boy when he stumbled and pulling him into a joyful hug. Leo let out a delighted squeal, burying his face in his father’s sweater before reaching for his wooden train again.

Maren walked into the living room carrying a tray of hot cocoa. She stopped in her tracks, watching the two of them. A feeling of profound, complete peace settled over her heart. The past year had been a journey of rebuilding trust, forgiveness, and discovering a deeper, truer kind of love—a love rooted not in grand lifestyle promises, but in daily, intentional presence.

Everett looked up and met her gaze. He stood up, taking the tray from her hands and placing it on the side table.

"Leo," Everett said gently, turning to his son. "Can you go get the special box under the tree for Mommy?"

Leo looked up, his eyes lighting up at the game. He toddled over to the tree, grabbed a small, velvet-wrapped box tucked safely between the branches, and proudly brought it back, handing it to his father with a triumphant grin.

"Good job, buddy," Everett laughed, kissing the top of Leo's head before kneeling down on one knee in front of Maren.

Maren gasped softly, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Maren," Everett said, looking up at her with unwavering love and total clarity. "One year ago, I walked up to your doorstep angry, blind, and broken. I thought I was coming to face a rival, but instead, you gave me the greatest gift of my life. You saved me from becoming a man who knew the price of everything and the value of nothing."

He slowly opened the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking ring—not a giant corporate diamond like the one he had bought her years ago, but a delicate, vintage ring crafted with a warm sapphire stone, surrounded by intricate silver leaves.

"I don't offer you a life of luxury or corporate titles," Everett said, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "I offer you my heart, my time, my undivided presence, and my promise that you and Leo will always come first. Will you marry me again, Maren? Will you let us build a real family, together?"

Tears of pure happiness overflowed down Maren’s cheeks. She looked at the ring, then at Everett, and finally at their beautiful son standing beside him, clapping his tiny hands in delight.

She sank down to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around Everett's neck, pulling him close.

"Yes," Maren whispered against his cheek, her voice filled with joyful certainty. "Yes, Everett. A thousand times, yes."

Everett slipped the ring onto her finger, pulling her into a deep, tender kiss as the warm firelight danced across the walls. Outside, the snow continued to fall softly over Old Town Alexandria, wrapping the quiet streets in peace. But inside, warm and safe beside the fire, three hearts had finally found their way home.
