Chapter 12 - The Message Evelyn Left Behind

“Clarissa, your mother left you one final message…”
I stood completely still.
The words seemed to come from everywhere at once.
From the walls.
From the darkness beneath us.
From the past I had spent twenty years trying to bury.
Emma was still holding my hand.
Amelia stood beside her.
Julian had gone pale.
Even my father looked shaken.
“Where is that voice coming from?” I whispered.
No one answered.
Then the old speaker above us crackled again.
A recording began.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Evelyn.
My breath caught.
“My dearest Clarissa…”
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, I could almost feel her hand in mine again.
The hospital.
The oxygen mask.
Her dying eyes.
The silver key pressed into my palm.
I opened my eyes.
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally found you.”
My father looked toward the speaker.
“You should have destroyed that.”
Julian stared at him.
“You knew about the recording?”
My father said nothing.
Evelyn continued.
“I know you will hate me.”
My tears began falling.
“You will hate me for taking your children. You will hate me for lying to you. You will hate me for allowing you to believe one of them was dead.”
I looked at Emma.
She was crying too.
“But if I had told you the truth, neither girl would have survived.”
My father's expression tightened.
The recording continued.
“Your father and Julian's father were not the only men involved.”
I froze.
Julian looked at me.
“There were others.”
Evelyn's voice trembled.
“Doctors. Lawyers. Financial officers. Men who believed they could buy lives because they had enough money.”
I looked toward the dark staircase.
The children.
The voices beneath us.
How many?
Evelyn answered before I could ask.
“They were not the first children.”
Amelia covered her mouth.
“There were dozens.”
My father suddenly stepped toward the control panel.
Julian blocked him.
“Don't.”
“Move.”
“No.”
My father stared at him.
“You don't know what you're doing.”
“I know enough.”
“You're risking everyone.”
“You've been risking everyone for twenty years.”
My father raised his hand.
Julian grabbed his wrist.
They struggled.
I turned back toward the speaker.
Evelyn continued.
“Clarissa, if you have found both your daughters, you must understand one thing.”
The recording paused.
Static filled the room.
Then her voice returned.
“Neither of them was the real reason your father wanted R-17.”
I looked at Amelia.
She stared back.
“What does that mean?” she whispered.
I didn't know.
Evelyn continued.
“The genetic marker was only part of it.”
Julian suddenly stopped fighting.
My father looked at the speaker.
“No.”
Evelyn's voice became quieter.
“The true value of R-17 was not in her blood.”
Silence.
“It was in her memory.”
My stomach tightened.
Emma looked confused.
Amelia looked terrified.
“What memory?” I asked the empty room.
The recording continued.
“Your daughter was exposed to something before she was born.”
Julian whispered, “No.”
My father stepped backward.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn answered through the recording.
“I hid the information inside her.”
I felt dizzy.
“Inside her?”
“She doesn't remember it consciously.”
My father looked toward Amelia.
“She can't.”
“She doesn't have to.”
The recording continued.
“The information will surface only when both twins are together.”
Amelia grabbed Emma's hand.
“What information?”
The speakers went silent.
Then another recording began.
This one was different.
A man's voice.
Older.
Cold.
My father's voice.
I turned toward him.
He looked genuinely frightened.
The recording said:
“Subject R-17 has been implanted with the access sequence.”
I stared at him.
“You did this.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
The recording continued.
“Subject B will carry the biological confirmation.”
Amelia looked at Emma.
“What does that mean?”
My father didn't answer.
Julian did.
“It means the two girls were designed to open something.”
The floor beneath us suddenly vibrated.
A heavy mechanical sound came from below.
The steel door continued opening.
Cold air rushed up the staircase.
Then I heard crying.
Children.
Several children.
My heart broke.
“How many are down there?”
My father said nothing.
I turned toward him.
“How many?”
His silence was enough.
Julian looked down the stairs.
“We have to get them out.”
My father grabbed his arm.
“You can't.”
Julian shoved him away.
“Watch me.”
We started down.
The staircase was narrow.
Emergency lights flashed along the walls.
Red.
Darkness.
Red again.
Emma stayed beside me.
Amelia followed.
Julian came behind us.
My father remained at the top.
Then I heard a metallic click.
I turned.
He was holding a gun.
“Stop.”
Julian immediately stepped between him and us.
“Put it down.”
“You don't understand.”
“We understand perfectly.”
My father pointed toward the basement.
“If you open that room, everything ends.”
I looked at him.
“Good.”
I kept walking.
“Clarissa!”
I didn't stop.
We reached the bottom.
A long corridor stretched ahead.
Doors lined both sides.
Some were open.
Some were locked.
On several doors were numbers.
R-01.
R-02.
R-03.
I stopped.
“Oh my God.”
Amelia looked at the doors.
“These are the children.”
Julian's face hardened.
“Keep moving.”
We passed R-06.
R-07.
R-08.
The crying became louder.
Then we reached a large steel door.
No number.
Only one word.
ARCHIVE.
Julian tried the handle.
Locked.
Emma stepped forward.
“Move.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
She touched the silver necklace around her neck.
The pendant began to glow faintly beneath the emergency light.
I stared.
“That's impossible.”
Amelia stepped closer.
Her scarlet bracelet had the same symbol engraved into it.
Two halves.
One design.
When the girls stood beside each other, the two symbols aligned.
A soft click came from inside the door.
The lock opened.
Julian stared.
“They're the keys.”
Emma looked at him.
“No.”
She touched the pendant.
“They're the evidence.”
The door opened.
Inside were rows of files.
Photographs.
Medical records.
Hard drives.
Boxes.
And at the center of the room was a large glass cabinet.
Inside it was a single folder.
My name was written across the top.
CLARISSA MORGAN.
I walked toward it.
Julian caught my arm.
“Don't.”
I pulled away.
“Why?”
“I don't know what's inside.”
“That's never stopped me before.”
I opened the cabinet.
The folder was sealed.
I tore it open.
The first document was dated twenty years earlier.
The second was dated six years earlier.
The third was dated yesterday.
I froze.
Yesterday.
Someone had been updating my file.
I turned the page.
A photograph was attached.
It showed me leaving my house.
Then another.
Me entering the hospital.
Then another.
Me standing beside Evelyn's urn.
Someone had followed me.
For years.
At the bottom of the page was a handwritten sentence.
SUBJECT HAS NOT REMEMBERED YET.
I looked at Julian.
“What does this mean?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
Emma took the page from me.
Her expression changed.
“They were watching you because of me.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because they wanted to know when you would find me.”
Amelia picked up another document.
Her face went white.
“Mom.”
I turned.
“What?”
She held out the paper.
“This is my birth record.”
I took it.
The name of my biological mother was written clearly.
Evelyn Morgan.
I stared.
Then I looked at Emma's document.
Her biological mother was also listed as Evelyn.
Both girls.
Both mine.
But beneath Emma's name was another line.
SECONDARY MATERNAL SUBJECT: CLARISSA MORGAN.
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Julian stepped closer.
“I've never seen that.”
I turned the page.
The answer was underneath.
Genetic relationship confirmed.
My blood ran cold.
“They tested me.”
Julian nodded.
“Probably.”
“No.”
I looked at the dates.
The test had been done six years ago.
After Evelyn died.
After she gave me the key.
Someone had taken my blood.
Someone had tested me.
Someone had been preparing for this moment.
Then I saw the final page.
It contained one sentence.
CLARISSA IS NOT MERELY THE MOTHER.
I stared.
“What am I?”
No one answered.
A sound came from behind us.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Coming down the corridor.
Julian raised his gun.
“Who's there?”
No answer.
Then a woman stepped from the darkness.
She was older.
Around fifty.
Blonde hair.
A scar across her cheek.
I recognized her immediately.
The woman from Julian's phone.
The woman I had once believed was Vanessa.
She smiled.
“Hello, Clarissa.”
Emma froze.
Amelia stepped backward.
Julian raised his weapon.
“You're supposed to be dead.”
The woman laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
I stared at her.
“You took my daughter.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I saved her.”
“From what?”
She looked directly at Emma.
“From your father.”
My father.
I turned.
He was standing at the end of the corridor.
His gun was still in his hand.
But he wasn't aiming at the woman.
He looked terrified.
The woman smiled at him.
“It's been a long time.”
My father whispered her name.
“Evelyn…”
I stopped breathing.
The woman smiled.
May you like
And then she said the words that made the entire world disappear beneath my feet—
“I’m not Evelyn. Your mother is.”
