Chapter 5 - The File That Was Never Meant to Exist

The envelope had my name on it.
Not a rank.
Not a title.
Not a code number.
My name.
Captain Evelyn Mercer.
I stared at the handwriting for several seconds before touching it.
Because there was something impossible about that moment.
Marcus Dole had written this before Shadow died.
Before my own investigation.
Before I ever walked into the Coronado Annex.
Before I knew his name.
Someone had planned for me to find this.
The question was why.
I looked through the glass toward Thor.
He was lying down again.
Watching me.
Waiting.
Like he had completed the task Marcus gave him.
I picked up the envelope.
It was old.
The paper had softened around the edges.
But the seal was untouched.
No one had opened it.
No one except the person Marcus intended.
Me.
I carried it back to my office.
Locked the door.
Closed the blinds.
Then I sat there for almost five minutes without moving.
In the military, hesitation was dangerous.
But so was rushing into something you didn't understand.
Finally, I opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
And one photograph.
The photograph showed Marcus and me.
Together.
My breathing stopped.
Because I had never met Marcus Dole.
Not officially.
Not personally.
Yet there we were.
Standing beside each other at a training facility years earlier.
The picture was real.
The uniform.
The background.
Everything.
But I had no memory of that day.
I flipped the photo over.
Three words were written on the back.
"Your first mission."
My fingers tightened.
That was impossible.
My first special operations mission had been classified.
Almost everything about it had been sealed.
I looked at the letter.
Marcus's handwriting filled the page.
Captain Mercer,
If you are reading this, then I failed.
Not in the way they will tell you.
Not in the report.
Not in the official story.
I failed because I couldn't protect everyone.
I stopped reading.
Everyone.
Not everything.
Everyone.
I continued.
You don't know me, but I know you.
You were part of Project Shadow before you knew what Project Shadow was.
I looked away from the page.
The words felt heavier than they should have.
Project Shadow.
The name that had followed me for years without explanation.
A mission.
A program.
A memory I couldn't fully access.
I kept reading.
They removed your records because you survived.
They removed mine because I asked questions.
The dogs remember what happened.
They remember who was there.
They remember who lied.
My heart started beating faster.
I looked toward the kennel camera.
Thor.
Ares.
Zeus.
Three animals everyone thought had broken.
But they weren't broken.
They were carrying something.
The letter continued.
Do not trust Cross.
Do not trust Whitfield.
And do not believe the report about Shadow.
I stopped.
Because that name hurt differently.
Shadow.
My dog.
My partner.
The one memory I had spent years trying not to revisit.
I kept reading.
The truth about what happened in Afghanistan is hidden inside the original mission archive.
The archive was never destroyed.
It was moved.
And the only ones who know where it is are the ones who survived.
At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.
Find the room beneath the training yard.
Marcus.
I read it again.
The room beneath the training yard.
A hidden room.
Another secret.
Another thing buried under concrete.
I stood immediately.
Someone had spent years hiding pieces of the truth.
And now those pieces were finding their way back to me.
I left my office and headed toward the training yard.
The building was quieter than before.
Too quiet.
As I walked, I noticed something.
The security cameras were moving.
Not randomly.
Following me.
Someone was watching.
I stopped.
Looked directly into the camera.
Then continued walking.
If they wanted me to know they were watching, they wanted me afraid.
I refused to give them that.
When I reached the training yard, Thor was already standing.
He knew.
I entered the enclosure.
This time, he didn't hesitate.
He walked toward me.
Ares followed.
Then Zeus.
Three dogs.
Three sets of eyes.
All focused on the same mission.
I showed Thor the photograph.
His reaction was immediate.
He touched his nose to the image.
Marcus.
The dogs remembered.
But something else happened.
Ares suddenly moved away.
He walked to the opposite side of the enclosure.
Then looked back.
Waiting.
I followed.
At the corner of the yard was a section of concrete that looked slightly different.
Not enough for anyone to notice.
Unless they knew where to look.
I crouched down.
There was another symbol.
The same circle.
The same three lines.
I touched it.
A small mechanical sound came from beneath the ground.
The concrete shifted.
A hidden panel opened.
Inside was a narrow staircase.
Leading down.
I stared into the darkness.
The room beneath the training yard.
Marcus had been right.
I turned on my flashlight.
Then looked back at the dogs.
"You want me to go down there."
Thor didn't move.
But he didn't look away either.
I stepped onto the first stair.
Then another.
The air changed immediately.
Colder.
Older.
This wasn't a normal storage room.
The walls were reinforced.
Military construction.
Hidden access.
Someone had built this intentionally.
At the bottom was a small underground room.
A table.
A chair.
A computer terminal.
And hundreds of files.
All marked:
PROJECT SHADOW.
I walked closer.
My flashlight moved across the documents.
Operation reports.
Personnel lists.
Photographs.
Then I saw my own name.
Again.
Not Captain Evelyn Mercer.
Something older.
Something I had never seen before.
SUBJECT E-17.
I froze.
I opened the file.
Inside was a photograph of me.
Younger.
Before special operations.
Before Afghanistan.
Before I remembered certain things.
The report beneath it made my hands go cold.
"Subject demonstrates unusual compatibility with military working dogs following memory suppression event."
I read the sentence again.
Memory suppression.
The words didn't make sense.
I had never had my memory altered.
I would know.
Wouldn't I?
Then I found the next page.
A medical report.
A signature at the bottom.
Harlan Cross.
I stepped back.
The man who recruited me.
The man who knew Marcus.
The man whose name appeared everywhere.
The same man connected to the program I was never supposed to remember.
A sound came from above.
Footsteps.
I turned off the flashlight.
Someone was entering the hidden room.
I reached for my weapon.
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then a voice came from the top of the stairs.
"Captain Mercer."
I recognized it instantly.
My body went still.
Because the person standing above me was someone I thought had been dead for years.
Someone who knew the truth about Shadow.
Someone who knew why Marcus left this message for me.
The voice spoke again.
"Evelyn..."
A pause.
May you like
Then:
"You finally found the place where they buried your memories."
