Chapter 4 - What Grace Never Told Him

Detective Ortiz spun around.
A man stood twenty feet away.
Gray jacket.
Baseball cap.
Grace gasped.
“Evan.”
The man raised both hands.
“Don't shoot.”
Ortiz kept her weapon trained on him.
Evan Caldwell removed his cap.
Time had aged him, but there was no mistake.
Grace stared at the brother-in-law she had mourned nine years earlier.
“You let us bury you.”
Evan's face twisted.
“I didn't have a choice.”
“You always have a choice.”
“Mercer threatened Thomas.”
“And you disappeared?”
“I was trying to protect him.”
Grace slapped him.
The sound echoed through the station.
Evan accepted it.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Read Rebecca's letter.”
Daniel unfolded it.
Rebecca described discovering payments from the hospital foundation to shell companies connected to Mercer.
She had copied the records.
She intended to give them to federal investigators.
Her final paragraph made Daniel's knees weak.
Charles knows I have the files. If anything happens to me, do not believe the first explanation they give you.
Daniel remembered the hospital.
Rebecca on life support.
Doctors telling him aneurysm.
No suspicion.
No autopsy beyond standard procedure.
“You're saying Mercer killed her?”
Evan shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“But you know something.”
“I know Rebecca contacted Thomas.”
Grace stared at him.
“What?”
“Thomas helped her trace the transfers.”
Suddenly two tragedies separated by a year became one story.
Rebecca.
Thomas.
Mercer.
Daniel looked at Grace.
“Did you know?”
Grace's silence answered.
Daniel stepped back.
“You knew Rebecca had contacted Thomas?”
“I found out after Thomas died.”
“And you never told me?”
“I didn't know if it was true.”
“That isn't why.”
Grace looked down.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because when I came to the courthouse, I wanted you to hurt.”
The honesty cut him.
“I wanted you to learn what it felt like to discover the person you loved had been taken because somebody else decided their life was expendable.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
Grace began crying.
“And then I got to know you.”
Daniel turned away.
Evan interrupted.
“We don't have time for this.”
Daniel faced him.
“Then start talking.”
Evan explained.
Mercer Development had been laundering money through public construction contracts for more than a decade. Thomas discovered irregularities. Rebecca discovered the hospital connection.
Evan had worked as a courier for Mercer.
He had unknowingly transported documents and cash.
When he realized what was happening, he tried to leave.
Mercer staged his death.
“Why?”
“To control Thomas.”
Grace whispered, “Thomas thought you were dead.”
“For six months.”
“And then you visited him.”
Evan's face broke.
“I told him the truth.”
“Why didn't you get him out?”
“I tried.”
Grace hit him again.
This time Daniel caught her wrist.
She turned on him.
“Let me go.”
He did.
Evan pulled a flash drive from his pocket.
“This is why.”
He handed it to Daniel.
“The ledger?”
“Part of it.”
“Where's the rest?”
“Thomas hid it.”
Grace stared.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
Daniel remembered Thomas's note.
Room 317.
But they had searched it.
Unless they had searched the wrong part.
They returned to the courthouse after midnight with Ortiz and a warrant.
Room 317 contained nothing obvious.
Grace examined the floor.
She had cleaned buildings for years.
She noticed what the others didn't.
“One tile is newer.”
Daniel knelt.
They lifted it.
Beneath was a waterproof metal box.
Inside were photographs, bank records, and a small digital recorder.
Grace pressed play.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
“If anyone hears this, my name is Thomas Caldwell.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Thomas continued.
“I did not steal the pension money.”
For fifteen minutes, Thomas described everything.
Mercer's operation.
The threats.
Rebecca's investigation.
The false plea agreement.
Then he said something none of them expected.
“Judge Whitaker doesn't know.”
Daniel opened his eyes.
“I watched him during sentencing. He believes I'm guilty. Mercer wanted me to hate him, but Whitaker was given the same lie everybody else was.”
Grace began sobbing.
Thomas's voice continued.
“If Grace ever finds this, tell her not to waste her life hating the wrong man.”
Daniel looked at her.
Grace could not look back.
The recording ended.
Silence.
Then Ortiz's phone rang.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She listened.
“When?”
Daniel stood.
“What happened?”
Ortiz lowered the phone.
“Paul Danner is gone.”
“Gone where?”
“He emptied his apartment.”
Evan swore.
Then Grace noticed another item inside the box.
A sealed envelope.
Her name was written on it.
Grace opened it.
Inside was a photograph of herself taken three weeks earlier.
She was leaving Daniel's house.
On the back were six words:
YOU WERE WARNED TO STAY AWAY.
Daniel took the photograph.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
It contained a live photograph.
May you like
His house.
And someone was standing inside Rebecca's old bedroom.
