Chapter 2 - The Shattered Dynasty

"Fire," Evelyn commanded softly to the guard on her right.

Before the guard could raise his weapon, a deafening crash echoed through the study. The floor-to-ceiling glass window behind Evelyn shattered into ten thousand glittering pieces as two armed federal agents swatted through the opening, ropes swinging from the roof.

"FBI! Hands where we can see them! Drop the weapon!"

Chaos exploded in the room. Evelyn’s guards reacted instantly, firing toward the windows, but they were quickly overwhelmed by the tactical unit pouring into the mansion. Smoke grenades filled the room with thick white clouds. I threw myself behind the heavy oak desk, clutching the 1998 ledger to my chest like a shield.

Through the haze, I saw Julian dash into the room—not to attack me, but to grab Evelyn’s hand.

"Mother, we have to go now! The local police were bribed, but these are federal agents—someone tipped off the Department of Justice!" Julian yelled.

Evelyn glared at me through the smoke, her eyes burning with pure venom. "This isn't over, Clara!" she spat before letting Julian drag her through a hidden service door behind the bookshelf.

I coughed, dragging myself out from behind the desk as a tall agent in an FBI vest knelt beside me. "Clara Montgomery?" he asked, his voice steady and authoritative.

"Yes... yes, that's me," I gasped.

"I’m Agent Vance, financial crimes division. Your husband, Arthur, contacted us three weeks ago. He handed over a duplicate set of evidence regarding his family's offshore accounts and requested protection for you in the event of his incapacitation."

Tears streamed down my face, mixing with the soot on my cheeks. Arthur hadn't left me unprotected. Every move he made was designed to draw Evelyn's fire away from me and into the hands of the law.

"Is he... is he still alive?" I begged, gripping Agent Vance's arm.

"He was stabilized twenty minutes ago. Our team secured the ICU floor at Grace Hospital the moment Evelyn left. But we need to move. Evelyn has private jets registered under shell companies in Vancouver. If she leaves the country, catching her will take years."

We sped back toward Seattle under heavy armed escort. The rain had cleared, leaving the city lights gleaming like cold diamonds against the black night. But the battle was far from over.

By 7:00 AM, news of the FBI raid on the Montgomery mansion had leaked to the press. Stock in Montgomery Global plummeted by 40% in pre-market trading. TV anchors were speculating wildly: Was the CEO dead? Was the family under investigation for treason?

Inside the federal courthouse in downtown Seattle, I sat with Agent Vance and a team of federal prosecutors. The ledger and the flash drive I rescued contained undeniable proof of systemic corporate fraud, wire tapping, and murder-for-hire spanning three decades. However, Evelyn’s legal team was already striking back.

At 9:00 AM, Evelyn’s lead attorney launched a massive media campaign, releasing a statement accusing me of drugging Arthur, manipulating him into a fraudulent marriage while he was mentally incompetent, and conspiring with rogue federal agents to steal corporate secrets.

They played a heavily edited video recording of Arthur in his hospital room weeks prior, looking frail and confused, seemingly agreeing that he didn't know who I was.

Public opinion shifted overnight.

Social media exploded with hatred targeted at me. I was branded a "gold-digger," a "black widow," and a "sociopath." Protesters gathered outside the courthouse holding signs demanding my arrest. The internet became a courtroom, and I was being burned at the stake.

"We need to put you on national television," my court-appointed attorney, Marcus Vance, told me in a quiet conference room. "Evelyn is winning the narrative war. She’s framing this as a grieving mother protecting her dying son from an opportunistic predator. If the public believes her, the grand jury might hesitate to indict her."

"I don't care about the public," I said bitterly. "I care about Arthur."

"Arthur can't speak for himself right now, Clara!" Marcus insisted. "You are his voice. If you stay silent, Evelyn wins, the company boards will sweep this under the rug, and when Arthur dies, she will inherit everything—including the right to bury the truth forever."

Two hours later, I stood in front of a wall of flashing cameras at a hastily called press conference.

The room was packed with journalists shouting questions over one another.

"Clara! Did you force Arthur to sign the marriage certificate?"

"Are you after the four billion dollars?"

"Is it true you were fired from your teaching job for misconduct?"

I took a deep breath, looking straight into the main camera lens—straight into the eyes of millions of people watching across the country. I didn't use a script. I didn't use legal jargon.

"Six months ago," I began, my voice echoing clearly through the microphone, "I met a man named Arthur who was terrified. Not of dying—but of leaving this world without ever having experienced real love. He knew his family saw him as nothing more than a asset on a balance sheet. He knew his mother cared more about stock prices than his beating heart."

I reached into my bag and pulled out Arthur’s personal black notebook, holding it up for the cameras.

"This is Arthur’s daily journal. In it, he documented every single day of his illness, every conversation with his lawyers, and every threat made by Evelyn Montgomery. He married me not to give me his money, but to give me the legal right to protect his life when he could no longer speak."

I turned directly to the camera broadcasting live to Evelyn’s private holding suite.

"Evelyn, you tried to buy my silence with five million dollars last night. You tried to have me shot in your study. You told me that real power doesn't share. But real power isn't money, Evelyn. It's the truth. And today, the truth is coming for you."

The press room went dead silent. The raw, unfiltered truth in my voice had completely flipped the energy in the room.

Within an hour, the unedited hospital tapes were leaked to the press by an anonymous hospital nurse, showing Evelyn explicitly instructing doctors to increase Arthur’s sedation levels so he couldn't sign legal documents. The public outrage reversed instantly. The hashtag #JusticeForArthur swept across the globe.

That afternoon, the Department of Justice issued an arrest warrant for Evelyn and Julian Montgomery for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and witness intimidation.

I rushed to the hospital under federal guard. The ICU floor was quiet now, cleared of media and corrupt family representatives. I walked slowly into Arthur’s room. The heart monitor beeped rhythmically.

I took his cold, pale hand in mine and leaned down to whisper in his ear. "It's over, Arthur. You're safe now. I brought the ledger."

As I spoke, the fingers of his right hand twitched slightly.

The machine beside his bed began to beep faster. I looked up at the monitor—his brain activity was spiking. Arthur slowly, painfully opened his eyes, looking directly at me through tears of exhaustion.

"Clara..." he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "You... you saved us."

Before I could answer, the door behind me swung open.

It wasn't the doctors. It was Agent Vance, his expression dead serious.

"Clara, we have a problem," Vance said urgently. "Evelyn didn't go to the airport. Her private security team just hijacked a city transport truck. They’re heading straight for this hospital—and they've cut the main power grid to the building."

The lights in the ICU flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire room into pitch-black darkness.
