Chapter 5 - The Name on the Birth Certificate

Nobody spoke.
Adrian turned the photograph over twice, as though a second look might change the words.
It didn't.
ADRIAN IS NOT A VALE.
Sofia wiped her face.
"Your father knew."
Adrian looked at her.
"Who was my biological father?"
Robert answered too quickly.
"Does it matter?"
Adrian's gaze cut toward him.
"It matters to you."
Robert's jaw tightened.
Eliza suddenly understood.
"That's what you were holding over Adrian's father."
Sofia nodded.
"Partly."
"Partly?"
Sofia looked at Adrian.
"I was married before Vincent Vale."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"To whom?"
"Jonathan Pierce."
The name meant nothing to Eliza.
It meant something to Daniel.
He whispered, "The prosecutor."
Adrian turned.
Daniel continued.
"Jonathan Pierce prosecuted organized-crime cases in the nineties."
Sofia nodded.
"He investigated Robert's network."
Robert rolled his eyes.
"He investigated everyone."
"And he disappeared," Daniel said.
Sofia's face tightened.
"Yes."
Adrian stared at Robert.
"You killed him."
Robert smiled.
"You have an impressive tendency to accuse people without evidence."
Eliza lifted Eleanor's case.
"Fortunately, Grandma had a tendency to collect it."
Robert's amusement vanished.
Adrian unfolded the letter that had accompanied the photograph.
He read silently.
Then handed it to Eliza.
Eleanor's handwriting covered two pages.
Adrian,
If this reaches you, you have learned the secret Vincent spent his life protecting.
Vincent was not your biological father.
He was something rarer.
He was the man who chose to become your father after Jonathan Pierce disappeared.
Jonathan was my attorney and one of the bravest men I knew.
He discovered that my son Robert was using the Hartwell Foundation as part of a criminal network.
My own son believed wealth entitled him to power without consequence.
Jonathan intended to expose him.
He vanished before he could.
Eliza stopped reading.
Her hands shook.
Her own father.
Her own family.
She continued.
Vincent Vale helped Sofia and me preserve Jonathan's evidence.
Robert later discovered Adrian's parentage and threatened to reveal it in a way that would endanger the boy and destroy the Vale family's fragile transition away from organized crime.
Vincent accepted years of blackmail to keep Adrian safe.
When Vincent finally chose to testify, Robert sent men after him.
Vincent was badly wounded.
Sofia ended his suffering at his request rather than allow Robert's men to take him alive.
Never mistake her act of mercy for betrayal.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Sofia whispered, "I'm sorry."
He didn't respond.
Eliza handed back the letter.
Robert laughed softly.
"Eleanor always loved dramatic prose."
Eliza turned.
"Did you have Jonathan killed?"
"No."
"Who did?"
"I don't know."
Marcus spoke from the wall.
"That's another lie."
Robert looked at him.
Marcus removed something from inside his bloodstained jacket.
A tiny memory card.
"I found this in his office."
Robert's face changed.
Marcus smiled weakly.
"That's why his people shot me."
Adrian's guard took the card.
"What is it?"
"Security archive."
Marcus looked at Eliza.
"Your father's private meetings."
Robert stepped forward.
"Give me that."
Nobody moved.
Adrian held out his hand.
The guard gave him the card.
Robert's voice hardened.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Adrian slipped it into his pocket.
"I've heard that several times tonight."
Eliza looked at Marcus.
"Why bring it here?"
"Because Daniel told me about Eleanor's backup files."
Daniel stared.
"I told you to disappear."
"I tried."
Marcus winced.
"They found me."
Eliza felt no sympathy for the man who had forged her signature.
But she realized something important.
"You sent the warning."
Marcus nodded.
"DON'T GO HOME."
"Yes."
"Who was inside?"
"One of Robert's men."
Daniel turned.
"You said it was you."
"I needed you away from Eliza's house."
"Why?"
Marcus looked embarrassed.
"Because I thought the second key was there."
Eliza laughed in disbelief.
"So even while saving me, you were robbing me."
"Pretty much."
"At least he's honest," Adrian said.
Marcus shrugged painfully.
"I've had a rough evening."
Sirens sounded outside.
Robert looked toward the stairs.
"Police?"
Adrian nodded.
"State investigators."
Robert smiled.
"You think local warrants will matter?"
"No."
Adrian took out his phone.
"I think the federal agents arriving behind them might."
Robert's confidence faltered.
"You called the FBI?"
"Eleanor did."
Everyone stared.
Adrian held up a document from the case.
"Dead-man release protocol. If unauthorized transfers occurred from the trust, her attorneys were instructed to send archived evidence to federal investigators."
Daniel whispered, "When?"
"Tomorrow morning."
Robert's eyes shifted to the flash drive.
Adrian smiled without humor.
"Unless we send it tonight."
Robert moved.
Fast.
He grabbed Eliza.
A small blade appeared against her throat.
Everything stopped.
"Back away."
Adrian did.
So did the guards.
Daniel went white.
"Dad—"
Robert snapped, "Don't call me that like you're family."
Eliza felt the blade cold against her skin.
Her father held her tightly.
She could smell his cologne.
The same cologne he had worn at her wedding.
"Give me the drive," he said.
Adrian's hand remained open at his side.
"Let her go."
"The drive."
"Robert," Sofia whispered.
"Stay out of this."
Eliza spoke quietly.
"Dad."
His grip tightened.
"Don't."
"I need to know something."
"Not now."
"You left Grandma to die, didn't you?"
His breath changed.
Eliza felt it.
Adrian saw it too.
"What are you talking about?" Daniel asked.
Eliza remembered Eleanor's final weeks.
A sudden stroke.
Robert arriving before the ambulance.
Medical records he insisted on handling.
"She wasn't confused."
Robert said nothing.
"She was going to expose you."
"Eliza."
"You visited her the night before she collapsed."
"Stop talking."
"You did something."
His blade pressed harder.
Adrian's voice lowered.
"Robert."
Eliza continued.
"You poisoned her."
Robert snapped, "She forced my hand!"
The room went silent.
He realized.
Too late.
Daniel whispered, "Jesus."
Robert's breathing became ragged.
"She was going to destroy everything."
Eliza's eyes filled with tears.
"She was your mother."
"She chose strangers over her own son."
"No."
Eliza's voice steadied.
"She chose the truth over you."
Robert jerked her backward.
Adrian took one step.
"Stay there!"
Eliza looked directly at Adrian.
For a second, neither spoke.
Then she let her knees buckle.
Robert wasn't expecting it.
His grip shifted.
The blade moved away from her throat.
Adrian crossed the distance instantly.
He slammed Robert's wrist against the wall.
The knife dropped.
Two guards pinned Robert to the floor.
Daniel pulled Eliza away.
She immediately pushed him off.
"I'm fine."
A thin line of blood marked her neck.
Adrian saw it.
His expression darkened.
Eliza touched it.
"Barely a scratch."
Federal agents descended the stairs seconds later.
Robert was handcuffed.
Marcus was taken for medical treatment under guard.
Daniel stood silently beside the shelf.
An agent approached him.
"Daniel Hartwell?"
He nodded.
"We need you to come with us."
Eliza looked at him.
Daniel didn't resist.
Before leaving, he stopped in front of her.
"I'm sorry."
She stared at him.
"For which part?"
He had no answer.
"That's what I thought."
He lowered his head.
Then he walked upstairs.
Hours later, Eliza found herself sitting in Adrian's mansion library again.
The party was long over.
Sofia had gone upstairs.
Investigators had taken the original evidence.
Adrian stood near the window.
"You should have your neck examined."
"A paramedic did."
"Again."
"You give orders when you're nervous."
He looked at her.
"I'm not nervous."
"You've told security to check the same window three times."
He almost smiled.
Then didn't.
Eliza studied him.
"Are you okay?"
"My biological father was murdered. The man I believed was my father died protecting me. My mother helped him die. Your father blackmailed them both."
"So no."
"No."
She nodded.
"Me neither."
For a while they sat in silence.
No romance.
No dramatic declarations.
Just two people whose families had exploded in the same night.
Eventually Adrian asked, "What will you do about Daniel?"
Eliza looked at her wedding ring.
"I don't know."
That surprised her.
After everything, she expected certainty.
Instead she felt grief.
Marriage didn't disappear simply because trust did.
"I loved him."
"I know."
"He humiliated me."
"I know."
"He also tried to protect me, badly."
Adrian nodded.
"Both can be true."
She looked at him.
"You don't hate him?"
"I don't know him well enough."
"You threatened him with your eyes several times."
"That's different."
Eliza smiled despite herself.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
Please don't forgive me quickly. If you ever forgive me at all, make me earn it.
She stared at the screen.
Another message followed.
There's one thing I haven't told investigators yet.
Her pulse quickened.
She opened it.
Your grandmother's trust has a second beneficiary.
Eliza frowned.
A third message appeared.
You need to ask Adrian why his name is beside yours.
She slowly looked toward him.
Adrian saw her expression.
"What?"
Eliza stood.
"Did you know?"
"Know what?"
She showed him the message.
For the first time since she met him, Adrian Vale looked completely stunned.
Then the library door opened.
Sofia stood there holding Eleanor's original trust agreement.
And on the final page were two signatures.
May you like
Eliza Hartwell.
Adrian Vale.
