Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Video

Mia replayed the first second three times.

Adrian watched from across the room.

“Who is she?”

Mia couldn’t answer.

The woman in the video wore a nurse’s uniform.

Older now.

But unmistakable.

“Claire Bennett,” Mia whispered.

Claire had worked at St. Catherine’s the night of the fire.

Officially, she had died in the east wing.

Yet here she was.

Alive.

The recording had been made recently.

Claire stared into the camera.

“Mia, if you’re seeing this, Daniel has already made his move.”

Mia stopped breathing.

Claire continued.

“The fire was not an accident.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Mia looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

He didn’t answer.

Onscreen, Claire glanced nervously behind her.

“Six years ago, a man was brought into St. Catherine’s under a false name. Someone came to finish what they had started. The fire was meant to erase him.”

Mia slowly turned toward Adrian.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“You told me you were in a highway accident.”

“That’s what the hospital was told.”

Claire continued.

“Mia saved the wrong man according to some very dangerous people. Afterward, somebody began watching her.”

Mia’s hands went cold.

“Daniel?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

The video jumped.

Claire leaned closer.

“Daniel Hartley approached you eight months after the fire. That wasn’t coincidence.”

Mia stared.

Eight months.

She had met Daniel at a coffee shop after he accidentally spilled coffee across her table.

He had been charming.

Patient.

Safe.

At least she had believed he was.

“No.”

Claire continued.

“Daniel was paid to stay close to you.”

Mia stopped the video.

Silence filled the apartment.

“No.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Mia—”

“Don’t.”

She wheeled backward.

“Don’t tell me you knew.”

“I didn’t.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“How am I supposed to believe anyone?”

“You shouldn’t. Not without proof.”

That answer stopped her.

Adrian reached into his jacket and placed his phone on the table.

“Use it.”

“For what?”

“Call anyone. My attorney. The hospital. Police. Search my name. Verify everything I tell you.”

Mia looked at him suspiciously.

“Who exactly are you?”

Adrian was silent.

One of his men shifted.

“Tell me.”

Adrian finally spoke.

“My family runs businesses in transportation, construction, security, and several things that don’t appear neatly on corporate websites.”

“That sounds deliberately vague.”

“It is.”

“Are you Mafia?”

His eyes held hers.

“People use that word.”

“Is it accurate?”

Another pause.

“Accurate enough.”

Mia laughed once.

It wasn’t humor.

“My husband abandons me at a bus stop, I discover my marriage may have been an assignment, and the man I rescued from a fire turns out to be a Mafia boss.”

“That summarizes an unpleasant evening.”

She stared at him.

Then, despite herself, a broken laugh escaped.

It became a sob.

Adrian looked away, giving her privacy without leaving.

Mia finished Claire’s video.

Claire explained that Daniel’s original job had been simple: watch Mia and report whether she remembered anything Adrian might have said while semiconscious after the attack.

But Daniel stayed.

Married her.

Then the crash happened two years ago.

A crash Mia had always believed was an accident.

Claire’s final sentence changed everything.

“Ask Daniel who was driving the truck.”

The video ended.

Mia went completely still.

The crash.

Rain.

Headlights.

A truck entering the intersection too fast.

Metal folding around her.

Daniel had walked away with bruises.

Mia had awakened after spinal surgery.

“What did she mean?”

Adrian was already making calls.

Within an hour, his people obtained the original police report.

The truck had been stolen.

The driver disappeared.

But a traffic camera several blocks away had captured someone abandoning it.

The photograph was poor.

Adrian enlarged it.

Mia stared at the screen.

“No.”

She knew the jacket.

Daniel owned one exactly like it.

Adrian stopped her before certainty turned into assumption.

“It isn’t enough to identify him.”

“He did it.”

“We prove it.”

Mia looked at him.

“We?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Adrian crouched before her wheelchair.

“Because six years ago you had every reason to leave me behind.”

His voice lowered.

“You didn’t.”

“That doesn’t mean you owe me your life.”

“No.”

His eyes stayed on hers.

“It means I know exactly what kind of person he tried to destroy.”

The next morning Daniel returned to the apartment.

He expected Mia to be alone.

Instead he found Adrian Moretti standing behind her wheelchair.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

His face drained.

“Who the hell are you?”

Adrian said nothing.

Recognition arrived a second later.

Daniel actually stepped backward.

“Mia.”

She had never heard fear in her husband’s voice before.

It was strangely clarifying.

“You know him,” she said.

Daniel recovered quickly.

“You need to come with me.”

“No.”

“You’re confused.”

“No.”

“You had an exhausting day.”

Mia almost smiled.

There it was.

The voice he used with doctors.

With friends.

With anyone he wanted to convince that Mia couldn’t trust herself.

“I know exactly what happened yesterday.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“This is between my wife and me.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“Then speak to your wife.”

Daniel approached.

Adrian didn’t move.

Mia raised a hand.

Adrian stopped.

That mattered.

Mia faced Daniel herself.

“Why did you marry me?”

Daniel blinked.

“What?”

“Why?”

“Because I loved you.”

“Did someone pay you to meet me?”

Silence.

Tiny.

Barely noticeable.

But Mia saw it.

Daniel’s eyes flicked toward the door.

Adrian saw it too.

“Who told you that?”

Mia felt something inside her finally break cleanly instead of painfully.

Not her heart.

The illusion.

“Get out.”

“Mia—”

“Get out.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea who you’re sitting beside.”

“I know exactly who abandoned me.”

Daniel leaned close.

“You think he saved you?”

Mia stared back.

“He picked me up.”

Daniel flinched.

Four simple words.

More devastating than shouting.

He backed toward the door.

Then he smiled.

It was a smile Mia had never seen.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Ask Moretti why you were really at St. Catherine’s that night.”

Adrian’s face changed.

Mia slowly turned.

Daniel noticed.

His smile widened.

“He never told you.”

“Told me what?”

Daniel opened the door.

“Your shift ended at eleven, Mia.”

She frowned.

“So?”

“The fire started at 1:17.”

Mia’s blood went cold.

Daniel stepped into the hallway.

“You weren’t supposed to be in that hospital.”

Then he left.

Mia turned toward Adrian.

“Why was I there?”

Adrian remained silent.

May you like

And Mia suddenly remembered something she had buried for six years.

At 12:52 that night, someone had called her from her father’s phone.
