THE HUSBAND SHE HUMILIATED / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Empire Built on a Lie

By Monday morning, Halston Global was collapsing.

The confession spread across financial media.

Trading was suspended.

Lenders demanded emergency meetings.

Reporters surrounded Halston headquarters.

Richard remained inside a boardroom with Ethan, Victoria, Maya, and six directors.

Malcolm’s chair was empty.

He had disappeared.

The board wanted Richard removed.

Richard did not fight.

For the first time in his adult life, he seemed tired of power.

Ethan placed the documents on the table.

“We need to separate what’s true from what was designed to look true.”

Director Samuel Kerr frowned.

“You still believe Halston can survive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because fifteen billion dollars of operating assets don’t disappear because the founding story changes.”

Victoria sat opposite Ethan.

She had changed.

No diamonds.

No red dress.

No performance.

Dark trousers.

White blouse.

Hair tied back.

She had spent forty-eight hours answering investigators, employees, and lenders.

When a director suggested blaming Ethan for unauthorized financial interference, Victoria stopped him.

“My husband saved this company repeatedly while we treated him like he was lucky to be allowed into the room. If anyone wants to blame him, start with me.”

Ethan had said nothing.

But he remembered.

Maya displayed her findings.

“Evelyn Cole did establish Meridian.”

Richard looked down.

Ethan remained still.

“But,” Maya continued, “Meridian was originally a legitimate restructuring vehicle.”

Ethan looked up.

“What?”

“She created it to acquire distressed Halston suppliers during the recession. Richard approved the concept.”

Richard frowned.

“I approved a supplier fund.”

“You didn’t know she incorporated it separately.”

“No.”

Maya continued.

“Charles Halston and Malcolm Price later hijacked the structure. They used it for kickbacks, false contracts, and money laundering.”

Victoria asked, “And Alexander?”

“He discovered it.”

Richard whispered, “I knew that.”

“Not all of it.”

Maya displayed another document.

“Alexander contacted federal investigators before his crash.”

Richard stared.

“He never told me.”

“He didn’t trust you.”

The words landed hard.

Ethan understood that feeling.

“Why fake his death?” Victoria asked.

“Because Malcolm discovered Alexander was cooperating.”

Richard looked at Ethan.

“The crash.”

“Probably attempted murder.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“And Dad helped him disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Then why come back now?”

Ethan answered.

“Because Malcolm started again.”

Arcadia was not Alexander’s attack vehicle.

It was bait.

Alexander had created Arcadia to expose Malcolm.

The four hundred eighty million transfer was designed to force Malcolm into moving hidden accounts.

But Alexander had used Victoria’s credentials without permission.

He had risked the company.

He had terrorized his family.

He had dragged Ethan’s dead mother into the public scandal.

His motives might be understandable.

His methods were not.

Richard asked, “Where is he?”

Ethan looked at Maya.

She brought up a location.

An abandoned Halston shipping terminal in New Jersey.

“His phone pinged there twenty minutes ago.”

Victoria stood.

“I’m going.”

Richard said, “No.”

She turned toward him.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”

Richard stopped.

Ethan almost smiled.

They reached the terminal with federal investigators already on the way.

Alexander waited inside an empty warehouse.

Victoria saw him first.

For twelve years, she had imagined what she would say if miracles existed.

Nothing survived the real moment.

She simply whispered:

“Alex.”

He turned.

His face broke.

“Vicky.”

She crossed the distance and hit him.

Then she hugged him.

Alexander held his sister while she cried.

Ethan stayed back.

Eventually Victoria pulled away.

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Mom died thinking you were dead.”

Alexander’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

“I hate you.”

“I know.”

She hugged him again.

Ethan looked away.

Some grief belonged to families.

Then Alexander faced him.

“You look like Evelyn.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to say her name yet.”

Alexander nodded.

“Fair.”

“Were you at my house the night she died?”

“Yes.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Why?”

“She called me.”

“You were nineteen.”

“I was already helping her collect evidence.”

“Who killed her?”

Alexander looked toward the warehouse entrance.

“Malcolm ordered the fire.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“And Charles?”

“Helped cover the money trail.”

“Where is Charles?”

“I don’t know.”

“Malcolm?”

Alexander smiled grimly.

“That’s why I brought you here.”

A door opened above them.

Malcolm Price appeared on the steel walkway.

He held no weapon.

Only a briefcase.

“Touching,” he said.

Victoria stared.

“You used me.”

Malcolm descended slowly.

“I used everyone.”

Alexander moved forward.

“You’re finished.”

Malcolm laughed.

“You still think this was about money.”

“What was it about?”

“Ownership.”

He placed the briefcase on a table.

Inside were original stock certificates.

Ethan immediately understood.

Halston Global’s founding shares.

Malcolm said, “Richard’s father never legally owned controlling interest.”

Richard arrived behind them with investigators.

“What?”

Malcolm smiled.

“The original controlling shareholder was Evelyn Cole’s father.”

Ethan stared.

“My grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he financed the company.”

Richard looked sick.

Malcolm continued.

“When Halston couldn’t repay him, control transferred to the Cole family. Richard’s father buried the agreement.”

Ethan looked at the certificates.

If authentic, they changed everything.

The Halston empire did not belong entirely to the Halstons.

A controlling block might legally belong to Ethan.

Victoria looked at her husband.

The man she had ordered to clean her shoe.

The man she accused of living off her family.

He might own the company her family claimed he needed.

Malcolm laughed softly.

“Irony has excellent timing.”

Federal agents entered.

Malcolm did not resist.

He had expected them.

That worried Ethan.

As an agent handcuffed him, Malcolm leaned toward Ethan.

“You think this ends with me?”

Ethan said nothing.

Malcolm smiled.

“Ask Alexander why he came back this week.”

Victoria looked at her brother.

Alexander’s face changed.

Malcolm was led away.

Ethan turned.

“Why this week?”

Alexander looked at Victoria.

Then Richard.

Finally Ethan.

“Because the controlling shares expire.”

“What?”

“There’s a clause.”

Ethan grabbed the original agreement.

Alexander pointed to the final page.

“If Evelyn’s lawful heir doesn’t assert ownership before the thirtieth anniversary of the transfer, the shares permanently revert to the Halston family.”

Ethan checked the date.

August 24.

Tomorrow.

Victoria whispered, “Then file the claim.”

Alexander shook his head.

“It’s not that simple.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn had two lawful heirs.”

Ethan stared at him.

“I’m an only child.”

Alexander said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who is the other heir?”

Alexander looked directly at Victoria.

May you like

Then he said the name.

“Victoria Halston.”
