Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind My Husband's Last Night

The lights went out.

Everything disappeared.

For a few seconds, I heard nothing.

Not Daniel.

Not the wind outside.

Not even my own breathing.

The darkness inside my house felt different.

Not like a normal power outage.

Like someone had reached into my home and turned everything off.

I stood completely still.

Then I heard Daniel whisper.

"Eleanor... don't move."

My hand tightened around the edge of the table.

"Why?"

A pause.

Then his voice became lower.

"Because whoever sent that message might still be here."

My heart started beating faster.

I wanted to believe this was impossible.

This was my home.

My safe place.

The place where I had raised my children.

The place where I had spent decades believing nothing bad could reach me.

But in one afternoon...

everything I trusted had changed.

My son had rejected me.

A missing friend had returned.

My husband's hidden documents had appeared.

And now someone was inside my house.

Watching us.

I reached for my phone.

The flashlight turned on.

The small beam moved across the room.

The furniture.

The walls.

The photographs.

Everything looked the same.

But it no longer felt the same.

Because now I knew someone had been here.

Someone had entered the one place where I believed I had control.

Daniel slowly moved toward the hallway.

"Stay here."

I grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked surprised.

"Eleanor."

"You disappeared for twenty years."

I looked directly at him.

"You don't get to walk into my house, tell me my husband was hiding secrets, and then tell me to stay behind."

For the first time, Daniel almost smiled.

A small, sad expression.

"Thomas was right about you."

I frowned.

"What?"

"He said you were the strongest person he knew."

I looked away.

"I don't feel strong."

Daniel looked at me.

"Strong people rarely do."

We moved through the hallway together.

Every step felt louder than it should.

The old wooden floor creaked beneath us.

I knew every corner of this house.

Every painting.

Every shelf.

Every memory.

But tonight...

I felt like I was walking through a stranger's home.

We reached the office.

The door was slightly open.

I stopped.

Because I knew I had closed it.

I always closed it.

Daniel noticed.

"You didn't leave it open?"

I shook my head.

"No."

He pushed the door gently.

Inside, everything looked untouched.

The desk.

The chair.

The shelves.

But then I saw it.

The drawer.

The one where I kept Thomas's personal files.

It was open.

I walked closer.

My hands became cold.

Someone had searched through it.

Daniel looked inside.

"They were looking for something."

I swallowed.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached into the drawer and removed a small empty envelope.

My name was written on it.

"Eleanor."

I looked at him.

"That was here?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I took the envelope.

It was old.

Yellowed.

But the handwriting was unmistakable.

Thomas.

My fingers trembled.

"Why would someone take the letter but leave the envelope?"

Daniel studied it.

"Because they didn't know the letter wasn't inside."

I looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel walked to the bookshelf.

He touched several books.

Then he stopped.

A memory crossed his face.

"What?"

He looked at me.

"Thomas had a hiding place."

My heart skipped.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

Daniel moved toward an old wooden cabinet.

"He showed me once."

He opened the cabinet.

Behind the books was a small gap.

A hidden compartment.

I stared.

Because I had lived in this house for thirty years.

And I never knew it existed.

Daniel reached inside.

But his hand stopped.

"Eleanor."

"What?"

"Before I take this out..."

He looked serious.

"You need to understand something."

I waited.

"Thomas wasn't hiding this from you because he didn't trust you."

"Then why?"

Daniel looked at the hidden compartment.

"Because he was afraid someone would use your love for your family against you."

Those words hurt.

Because they were true.

I had spent my entire life believing love meant giving people chances.

Giving them forgiveness.

Giving them help.

But maybe Thomas understood something I refused to see.

Not everyone protects what you give them.

Daniel removed a small black box.

It was covered in dust.

My husband's initials were carved into the top.

T.G.

I touched it.

The same initials engraved on his old watch.

The watch he wore every day.

The watch I buried with him.

My eyes filled.

"He made this?"

Daniel nodded.

"Three months before he died."

I looked at him.

"What happened three months before he died?"

Daniel became quiet.

Too quiet.

"Daniel."

He looked away.

"Eleanor, there is something you need to know."

I waited.

"The accident happened after Thomas discovered the truth about Kenneth."

The room felt colder.

"What truth?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he opened the box.

Inside were several items.

A small flash drive.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

The photograph caught my attention first.

I picked it up.

It showed Thomas.

Standing beside Kenneth.

But they were not smiling.

They looked serious.

Behind them was the company office.

And in the corner...

was another person.

A woman.

I looked closer.

I knew her.

My breathing stopped.

"That's impossible."

Daniel looked at the picture.

"You recognize her?"

I nodded slowly.

"She was dead."

Daniel's expression changed.

"No."

He looked at me.

"She wasn't."

The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.

"Who is she?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"The person who knows why Thomas died."

I stared at the picture.

The woman in the photograph was someone I had mourned years ago.

Someone everyone believed was gone.

Someone connected to the beginning of all these secrets.

Before I could ask another question, the flash drive on the table suddenly caught my attention.

There was a label.

Only four words.

"For Eleanor. When ready."

My hands shook.

"Thomas left this for me."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you bring this sooner?"

His face changed.

"Because I was trying to protect you."

I looked at him.

"From what?"

Daniel took a deep breath.

"From the truth."

I connected the flash drive to my laptop.

The screen lit up.

One video file appeared.

No title.

Only a date.

The night before Thomas died.

My heart stopped.

I clicked play.

The screen showed my husband's face.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

I covered my mouth.

Because seeing him again after all these years felt impossible.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"Eleanor..."

His voice broke me.

"If you are watching this, then I failed to keep this away from you."

Tears filled my eyes.

He continued.

"I need you to listen carefully."

The video became darker.

Thomas looked nervous.

Something I had never seen before.

"If Kenneth tells you that everything belongs to him..."

He paused.

"Do not believe him."

My hands tightened.

Then Thomas said the words that changed everything.

"Because Kenneth was never the person I was trying to protect the family from."

The video suddenly glitched.

The screen froze.

Then went black.

Daniel stepped closer.

"No."

"What?"

He looked terrified.

"He wasn't supposed to stop there."

The laptop suddenly restarted.

A new file appeared.

A file that had not been there before.

The name was simple.

One word.

"CONFESSION."

I stared at it.

Because underneath the file name was a timestamp.

It had been created only ten minutes ago.

Someone had accessed my husband's hidden files.

Someone who knew they existed.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

Three words appeared:

"Ask Daniel first."

I slowly lifted my eyes.

Daniel was standing across the room.

And for the first time since he returned...

I wondered if he had come back to reveal the truth...

or to hide it.

Then the laptop screen turned on by itself.

A new video began playing.

A man's voice came through the speakers.

A voice I recognized instantly.

Because I had heard it every day for forty years.

It was my husband's voice.

But Thomas was not speaking to me.

He was speaking to Daniel.

"Daniel, if Eleanor is watching this..."

A pause.

May you like

Then Thomas said:

"Tell her what you did the night I disappeared."
