Chapter 5 - My Father Came Back for Everything

For twelve years, I imagined what I would say if my father somehow walked through a door.
I thought I would hug him.
Hit him.
Cry.
Ask why.
I never imagined I would meet him while he held my best friend at gunpoint.
We reached the penthouse forty-three minutes later.
Marcus carried a decoy folder.
Daniel insisted on coming.
So did Lillian.
Vanessa stayed behind with security, which surprised me.
“I’ve been used enough tonight,” she said quietly. “But I’m not helping anyone hurt you.”
It wasn’t forgiveness.
It wasn’t friendship.
It was simply one broken woman recognizing another.
The elevator opened directly into my apartment.
Claire sat in a dining chair.
Her hands were free.
No visible injury.
My father stood beside the windows overlooking Manhattan.
He looked older.
Thinner.
His hair almost completely silver.
But his posture was the same.
So were his eyes.
“Hello, Evie.”
Nobody had called me Evie since the day he died.
For one dangerous second, I was twenty-two again.
Then I saw Claire’s face.
Fear returned me to the present.
“Let her go.”
My father smiled sadly.
“You sound like your mother.”
“Don’t.”
He nodded.
“Fair.”
Daniel moved forward.
Charles looked at him.
“You’ve gotten sloppy.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You threatened Claire.”
“I needed Evelyn here.”
“You could have called.”
Charles laughed.
“Would you have answered?”
I looked directly at him.
“Yes.”
His smile disappeared.
Maybe that hurt.
Good.
“You let me bury you.”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
I heard my own voice becoming steadier.
“You abandoned me.”
Charles looked away.
That was the first crack.
He still felt guilt.
I intended to use it.
“What do you want?”
“The trust documents.”
“Why?”
“Northstar is collapsing.”
“Because of Daniel?”
“Partly.”
He looked at my husband.
“I trained him better than I realized.”
My stomach turned.
“Trained him?”
Charles nodded.
“Daniel approached me when he was nineteen. Brilliant boy. Terrible family. Needed money.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You recruited me.”
“I gave you a future.”
“You turned me into a weapon.”
Charles almost smiled.
“And then you married my daughter.”
I looked at Daniel.
The full truth was becoming uglier by the minute.
“Did my father send you to me?”
Daniel didn’t hide.
“Yes.”
My chest tightened.
“But I left him before I met you.”
Charles laughed.
“Technically.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I was supposed to gain your trust. Access company records.”
“And you did.”
“I did.”
“Then what?”
“I fell in love with you.”
The words hurt because some part of me still wanted to believe them.
Charles interrupted.
“That’s Daniel’s favorite version.”
Daniel turned on him.
“You don’t get to talk about love.”
My father’s face changed.
“Careful.”
“No.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You disappeared and watched Evelyn grieve. You manipulated Lillian. You built Northstar using stolen money. And when Evelyn became sick, you started positioning yourself to take back Mercer Holdings.”
I stared at my father.
“Is that true?”
Charles looked at me.
“You weren’t supposed to survive surgery.”
Silence swallowed the room.
Claire made a small sound.
Marcus went completely still.
Daniel lunged.
I stepped between them before he reached my father.
Pain exploded through my chest.
Daniel caught me.
“Evelyn.”
I shoved his hand away.
My father stared at me.
He realized what he had said.
“You expected me to die.”
“Your condition was severe.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
He said nothing.
I moved closer.
“Did you cause it?”
Even Daniel seemed afraid of the answer.
Charles shook his head.
“No.”
“Did you interfere with my treatment?”
“No.”
“Did you know someone accessed my medical records?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Charles looked toward Claire.
I followed his eyes.
Claire’s face went white.
“No,” she whispered.
Charles said, “Her brother.”
Claire stood.
“My brother has been dead for six years.”
Charles smiled without humor.
“So have I.”
The room felt unreal.
Claire’s brother, Thomas Park, had worked in cybersecurity.
He supposedly died in a motorcycle accident in Nevada.
Claire had taken months to recover.
Apparently our families had developed a disturbing habit of refusing to stay buried.
“Thomas works for Northstar?”
Claire’s voice shook.
Charles answered.
“He runs digital operations.”
Claire looked sick.
“You’re lying.”
“Ask him.”
He tossed a phone onto the table.
It began ringing immediately.
Caller ID:
THOMAS.
Claire stared.
No one moved.
The phone rang again.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice filled the speaker.
“Claire.”
Her knees gave way.
Marcus caught her.
She began crying silently.
“Thomas?”
“I’m sorry.”
“You’re alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
A pause.
“Close.”
Claire looked at Charles.
“What did you do to Evelyn?”
Thomas answered quickly.
“Nothing. I accessed the records. I was looking for leverage against Charles.”
My father’s face tightened.
So Northstar itself had fractured.
People inside betraying each other.
Thomas continued.
“Charles planned to take control if Evelyn died during surgery.”
Claire gripped the phone.
“How?”
“He forged emergency succession documents.”
Marcus looked sharply at the folder he carried.
“That’s why he needs the originals.”
My father reached inside his jacket.
Daniel moved instantly.
So did Marcus.
Charles pulled out not a gun, but another envelope.
“Enough.”
He placed it on the table.
“I’m tired.”
I looked at him.
For the first time, he looked seventy.
Not powerful.
Not dangerous.
Just exhausted.
“What is that?”
“My confession.”
Daniel stared.
Charles sat down.
“I built Northstar because I thought power would protect you.”
His voice broke slightly.
“Then power became easier than being your father.”
I said nothing.
“I told myself every terrible decision had a reason.”
He looked at me.
“That’s how terrible people sleep.”
Something inside me loosened.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
They were not the same thing.
“Let Claire go.”
“She can leave.”
Claire didn’t move.
She still held the phone.
Thomas spoke.
“Claire, you need to get Evelyn out.”
Everyone turned.
“What?” Claire asked.
Thomas’s voice became urgent.
“Northstar knows Charles is there.”
Charles stood.
“They can’t know.”
“They do.”
“How?”
Thomas didn’t answer.
Then Daniel looked toward the penthouse windows.
A red dot moved across the wall.
Laser sight.
“Down!”
He tackled me as glass exploded.
Marcus pulled Claire behind the kitchen island.
Another shot hit the ceiling.
Charles crawled toward the hallway.
Daniel covered me with his body.
“You okay?”
I nodded.
Security alarms screamed.
Sirens sounded below.
The firing stopped.
Police arrived minutes later.
Charles surrendered without resistance.
For the first time in twelve years, my father was officially alive.
And officially under arrest.
By dawn, federal agents had taken him.
Claire was safe.
Thomas turned himself in remotely through his attorney.
Lillian agreed to cooperate.
Northstar began collapsing.
It should have felt like the end.
Instead, at 8:12 a.m., Marcus walked into my temporary hotel suite carrying Daniel’s sealed divorce response.
“He filed?”
“Yes.”
I opened it.
Daniel was not contesting the divorce.
He waived spousal support.
Waived claims to my inheritance.
Waived his executive compensation.
There was only one handwritten note.
I’m sorry I became another person who called betrayal protection.
I read it twice.
Then Marcus placed something else on the table.
“What’s that?”
“A copy of Daniel’s federal cooperation agreement.”
I looked up.
Marcus’s expression was strange.
“You need to read page fourteen.”
I opened it.
Paragraph six.
My eyes stopped on one sentence.
Daniel Whitmore agreed to maintain his relationship with Vanessa Cole as part of an authorized operation.
Below it was a date.
Two years earlier.
Months before Daniel’s affair supposedly began.
I looked at Marcus.
“So he wasn’t cheating?”
Marcus shook his head.
I turned the page.
There was a second document.
Signed by Daniel.
A request to terminate the operation.
Reason:
I will not continue deceiving my wife.
The request had been denied.
May you like
Then I saw the date.
It was the night before my surgery.
