Chapter 4 - The Child Someone Wanted Hidden

Adrian covered Elena before the glass finished falling.

“Down.”

The driver swerved.

Elena crouched against the seat, one hand over her stomach.

Another impact struck the trunk.

Not a bullet this time.

The SUV rammed them.

Adrian pulled a compact handgun from beneath his jacket but did not fire.

“Can you get us to Lower Wacker?”

“Yes.”

The driver accelerated.

Elena stared at Adrian.

For the first time, she saw the world he had tried to keep hidden.

Not rumors.

Not newspaper speculation.

Real danger.

Real fear.

Not fear for himself.

For her.

The pursuing SUV disappeared after two Moretti security vehicles boxed it away from them near an underground ramp.

Adrian did not relax.

He took Elena to a private medical clinic owned by a longtime family friend.

The baby was fine.

Elena was shaken.

Adrian stood beside the examination room door, hands clenched.

When the doctor left, Elena looked at him.

“Tell me everything.”

“Tonight?”

“Now.”

Adrian sat.

“Lucia Romano was my fiancée eight years ago.”

Elena waited.

“She came from a family connected to mine. The engagement was arranged when we were young. We eventually became friends.”

“Did you love her?”

“Yes. But not the way I love you.”

Elena said nothing.

“Lucia wanted out of Chicago. She hated everything around our families. She met someone else.”

“What happened?”

“I helped her leave.”

Elena frowned.

“She didn’t vanish because you hurt her?”

“No.”

“Why does Camille tell the story that way?”

“Because Lucia’s father would have killed the man she loved if he knew the truth. We let everyone believe Lucia left because of me.”

“Where is she?”

“Seattle. Married. Two children. She sends Christmas cards to Marco because she thinks I hate Christmas decorations.”

“You don’t?”

“I do.”

Elena almost smiled.

Then remembered the shattered window.

“Who attacked us?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Camille?”

“Possibly. But attacking a pregnant woman is reckless even for her.”

“You say that like there are rules.”

“There are always rules.”

“That doesn’t make me feel better.”

“It shouldn’t.”

Adrian stood.

“I’m moving you somewhere safe.”

Elena started to object.

He raised one hand.

“Not permanently. Not because I’m ordering you. Because someone accessed your medical file and then followed our car. Tonight, I need you to trust me.”

She looked at him.

Then slowly nodded.

The safe house was not a mansion.

It was worse.

A penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.

“Adrian.”

“It was the smallest place available.”

“You are impossible.”

“It has reinforced glass.”

“That sentence did not help.”

Mia joined them before midnight.

She took one look at the apartment.

“I’m changing careers.”

For two days, Elena remained under guard while Adrian investigated.

On the third morning, Marco arrived with a flash drive.

“We found the source of the medical breach.”

Adrian inserted it into a laptop.

A Belladonna administrative account had been used.

Victor Kane’s account.

Elena stared.

“Victor?”

Marco nodded.

“His credentials.”

“Could someone have stolen them?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked grim.

“And someone probably did.”

Security footage from Belladonna showed Victor entering his office at the exact time the medical records were accessed.

But another camera showed someone else entering five minutes earlier.

Camille.

Elena sat back.

“Why?”

Adrian’s answer came slowly.

“Because your pregnancy changes something.”

“What?”

“My succession.”

Elena frowned.

“I’m not a king.”

“In some parts of Chicago, inheritance still matters.”

She looked at him.

“You’re telling me people care who your child is because of your business empire?”

“And because of things outside the legitimate businesses.”

There it was.

The truth.

Not all of it.

Enough.

Elena stood and walked to the window.

“You promised me honesty.”

“I know.”

“Are you a criminal?”

Adrian did not hide behind technicalities.

“I have done things I regret.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I inherited organizations that operated outside the law. I spent years dismantling some of it and legitimizing the rest. Some people benefited from the old system. They want it back.”

“Have you killed anyone?”

The room became still.

Adrian looked at her.

“I have defended myself.”

Elena closed her eyes.

He continued.

“I will not lie to you anymore.”

“That means yes.”

“Yes.”

She pressed a hand to her stomach.

Adrian stayed where he was.

“I understand if that changes everything.”

“It does.”

He nodded.

Elena expected him to argue.

He did not.

That made it harder.

“What happens now?”

“I keep you alive.”

“And then?”

“You choose.”

“What about our baby?”

“I will protect our child whether you ever forgive me or not.”

Elena looked at him.

“Protection isn’t enough.”

“I know.”

“A child needs a father who comes home.”

“I know.”

“A father who isn’t solving problems with guns.”

“I know.”

“A father who doesn’t disappear.”

His eyes lowered.

“I know.”

“Can you be that?”

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“I want to be.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

He took a breath.

“Yes.”

It was the first promise Elena believed he feared making.

That afternoon, Adrian summoned the senior men who still operated under the Moretti name.

They gathered in a private room beneath one of his hotels.

Marco stood beside him.

Adrian placed both hands on the table.

“Effective immediately, every remaining off-book operation closes.”

Silence.

An older man named Salvatore Greco frowned.

“That isn’t possible.”

“It is.”

“People will resist.”

“Then let them resist.”

“You’re doing this for the waitress?”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“I’m doing it because I should have done it years ago.”

Salvatore laughed.

“A baby made you soft.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“No. A baby gave me something worth leaving clean.”

Nobody laughed again.

Within forty-eight hours, gambling rooms closed.

Protection money stopped.

Several illegal shipping contracts were terminated.

Men who had grown rich beneath the old structure became furious.

One of them was Raymond Devereaux.

Camille’s father.

Adrian had underestimated how much Devereaux money depended on Moretti routes.

Raymond confronted him personally.

“You’re destroying agreements older than you.”

“They’re finished.”

“My daughter could have united our families.”

“My child is not a bargaining chip.”

Raymond’s face changed.

“So the pregnancy is confirmed.”

Adrian realized the mistake.

He had revealed too much.

Raymond smiled.

“Congratulations.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“If anything happens to Elena—”

“What? You’ll become the man you’re pretending you no longer are?”

Raymond walked away.

That night, Victor Kane disappeared.

His car was found near the river.

Empty.

Elena received a text from an unknown number.

I DIDN’T FRAME YOU. I WAS FORCED. I HAVE PROOF.

She showed Adrian.

He called immediately.

No response.

Another text arrived.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Victor knows who planted the bracelet.”

“It’s a trap.”

“Probably.”

“Then we don’t go.”

“We?”

“You’re not going anywhere alone.”

The next message included a photograph.

Victor sat in a chair.

His face bruised.

Behind him was a storage wall with numbered lockers.

Marco recognized the location.

“Old Union Station baggage annex.”

Adrian stood.

Elena grabbed his sleeve.

“You promised.”

“What?”

“That our child would have a father who comes home.”

Adrian looked at her hand.

Then her face.

“I’m coming home.”

He kissed her forehead.

It was the first time they had touched affectionately since the truth came out.

Elena’s eyes closed for half a second.

Then he was gone.

Adrian and Marco reached the abandoned annex just after midnight.

No police.

Not because Adrian feared law enforcement.

Because the message warned that Victor would die if officers appeared.

They entered through a loading door.

Rows of rusted lockers stretched into darkness.

Victor was there.

Alive.

Tied to a chair.

“Adrian,” he gasped.

Marco moved to him.

Adrian scanned the room.

“Who did this?”

Victor coughed.

“Camille didn’t frame Elena.”

Adrian froze.

“Who did?”

Victor looked toward the shadows.

“Her father.”

Raymond Devereaux stepped from behind the lockers.

He was not alone.

And beside him stood someone Adrian had trusted since childhood.

Someone who knew every Moretti security route.

Marco whispered the name.

May you like

“Salvatore.”

Then every exit locked at once.
