Chapter 6 - The Enemy Hidden Among Allies

The photograph sat on the desk between them.

A single piece of paper.

A single image.

Yet somehow, it felt heavier than anything Miles Keane had ever held.

Because sometimes a weapon was not a gun.

Sometimes a weapon was a memory.

And this one had just reopened a wound everyone believed was closed.

Silas Ror stared at the photograph.

His face revealed almost nothing.

That was what made him dangerous.

Most people showed anger.

Fear.

Shock.

Silas had built an entire empire by controlling what others could see.

But Miles had known him for too long.

He saw the smallest changes.

The tightening of his jaw.

The slight movement of his hand.

The way his eyes stayed fixed on one person in the photograph.

“He was there from the beginning,” Silas said quietly.

Nobody spoke.

Eli stood near the doorway, watching.

He didn’t know the people in the picture.

He didn’t know the history behind their faces.

But he understood one thing.

The man Silas was looking at was someone important.

Someone trusted.

Miles picked up the photograph.

“Tell me everything.”

Silas looked at him.

“You already know most of it.”

“No.”

Miles’s voice remained calm.

“But now I know something was hidden.”

The room became silent.

Harper stood beside Silas.

Her expression was controlled, but Eli noticed something.

She looked hurt.

Not surprised.

Hurt.

Like this betrayal was not just a threat.

It was personal.

Silas slowly sat down.

The weakness from his injuries was visible now.

But his voice remained steady.

“His name is Adrian Vale.”

Miles looked at the photograph again.

Adrian Vale.

The name meant something.

Not because he was famous.

Because he was trusted.

Adrian had been one of Silas’s closest advisors.

A man who had handled sensitive information.

A man who had access to schedules.

Security systems.

Private meetings.

Everything.

Miles’s expression darkened.

“Why would he do this?”

Silas looked toward the window.

“That is the question.”

Eli looked confused.

“But if he tried to kill you…”

Silas looked at him.

“Yes?”

“Doesn’t that mean he hates you?”

The room went quiet.

Because the answer was complicated.

Silas looked down.

“No.”

Eli frowned.

“No?”

“People rarely betray others because they hate them.”

Silas’s voice became colder.

“Sometimes they betray because they want something.”

Money.

Power.

Revenge.

Control.

Miles understood.

And that was what made the situation dangerous.

Adrian had not acted like an enemy.

He had acted like a friend.

A person who knew exactly where Silas would be.

Exactly how to hurt him.

Exactly how to make him disappear.

Miles looked at Harper.

“How long has he worked with you?”

“Twenty years.”

Eli looked surprised.

“Twenty?”

Silas nodded.

“Long enough to know everything.”

The words stayed in the air.

Because that was the real danger.

Not the attack.

Not the grave.

Not the forest.

The information.

Adrian knew the entire structure of the Ror organization.

He knew weaknesses.

He knew people.

He knew exactly where to push.

Miles walked toward the security monitors.

“We need to assume every system is compromised.”

A security officer entered.

“Miles.”

He turned.

“We found something.”

The officer placed a tablet on the table.

“Someone accessed the estate records three days before the attack.”

Miles looked.

“Who?”

The officer hesitated.

“That’s the problem.”

Miles looked at the screen.

The access code belonged to Adrian Vale.

Silas closed his eyes briefly.

Not from surprise.

From confirmation.

“He wanted me to know.”

Harper looked at him.

“What?”

Silas pointed toward the tablet.

“If he wanted to hide it, he would have erased everything.”

Miles understood immediately.

The evidence was too obvious.

Too convenient.

Adrian had left a trail.

Not because he was careless.

Because he wanted them to follow.

“He’s controlling the investigation.”

Miles said it quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

“He wants us focused on him.”

Harper’s expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because while we chase Adrian…”

Miles looked toward the security footage.

“…someone else is moving.”

The realization changed everything.

Adrian might be involved.

But he might not be alone.

The forest attack.

The missing tracker.

The hidden camera.

The access attempt.

Too many pieces.

Too many moving parts.

Eli listened carefully.

Then he spoke.

“What if Adrian isn’t the person who watched us?”

Everyone turned.

Miles looked at him.

“Explain.”

Eli walked toward the photograph.

“When I was in the forest, I saw the two men.”

He pointed at the image.

“Then I saw something else.”

Miles stayed silent.

“A shadow.”

Harper looked confused.

“You never mentioned that.”

Eli looked down.

“I wasn’t sure.”

Miles crouched slightly so they were at the same height.

“What kind of shadow?”

Eli thought.

“Someone standing still.”

“Not moving?”

“No.”

“Watching?”

Eli nodded.

“Like they already knew what was going to happen.”

Miles felt a cold feeling move through him.

Because that matched the third footprint.

The person who had been there.

The person who had waited.

The person who had watched.

Silas looked at Eli.

“You’re certain?”

Eli nodded.

“I know what it feels like when someone is watching.”

Nobody questioned that.

Because Eli had spent years surviving by noticing things other people ignored.

Miles stood.

“Adrian is one problem.”

He looked at Silas.

“But he may not be the only one.”

Silas leaned back.

“Find him.”

Miles nodded.

But before he left, Eli spoke.

“Can I help?”

Everyone looked at him.

Miles immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Eli frowned.

“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

“I know enough.”

“You think I’m just a kid.”

“No.”

Miles looked at him.

“I think you are a kid who has already been put in enough danger.”

Eli became quiet.

Because part of him knew Miles was right.

But another part hated hearing it.

Because being protected was something he was not used to.

Most of his life, nobody protected him.

He protected himself.

Silas watched the exchange.

Then he spoke.

“Let him stay.”

Miles turned.

“Silas.”

“The boy is involved whether we want him to be or not.”

“That’s exactly why he shouldn’t be.”

Silas looked at Eli.

“He saw something professionals missed.”

Miles was silent.

Because he knew.

Eli had noticed the watcher.

The timing.

The details.

Things trained people overlooked.

Silas continued.

“Keeping him away will not erase what happened.”

Eli looked at Silas.

For a moment, he saw something unexpected.

Not power.

Not fear.

Respect.

Silas Ror respected him.

And Eli didn’t know how to handle that.

Finally, Miles sighed.

“One condition.”

Eli looked at him.

“What?”

“You follow instructions.”

Eli nodded.

“Okay.”

“And you do not put yourself in danger.”

Eli hesitated.

Then:

“I’ll try.”

Miles looked at him.

“That’s not the answer I wanted.”

“It’s the honest one.”

For a second, silence filled the room.

Then Miles looked away.

Because he couldn’t argue with that.

Later that night, while the estate remained under lockdown, Miles stood alone in the security room.

The screens showed every corner of the property.

Every entrance.

Every hallway.

Every possible threat.

But something bothered him.

He zoomed in on the forest footage again.

The image of the hidden observer.

The unknown person.

The person who had been there before Miles arrived.

He enhanced the frame.

The picture became clearer.

Not enough to reveal a face.

But enough to reveal one detail.

A symbol.

A small marking on the person's jacket.

Miles froze.

Because he knew that symbol.

He had seen it years ago.

Before Silas built his empire.

Before the Ror name became feared.

Before Adrian Vale became trusted.

Miles stared at the screen.

The enemy was not just someone inside.

It was someone from the past.

Someone who should have disappeared.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Behind him, the door opened.

Eli stood there.

“You found something.”

Miles didn’t turn around.

“Yes.”

“Is it bad?”

A long silence.

Then Miles answered.

“Yes.”

Eli stepped closer.

“Who is it?”

Miles looked at the screen.

And for the first time that night, he looked uncertain.

“The person who started all of this.”

Outside, the wind moved through the trees.

The same forest where everything began.

The same place where a homeless boy had made a choice that changed his life forever.

But now Miles understood something.

Eli had not simply interrupted an assassination.

May you like

He had stepped into a war.

And the people fighting it had been waiting years for the right moment to begin.
