Chapter 4 - The Man Who Should Have Been Dead
“Mom!”
Danielle moved toward the screen.
“I’m here, baby.”
Lily’s cheeks were wet.
“Don’t let them hurt me.”
“I won’t.”
The masked man stepped forward.
“Agent Carter.”
“What do you want?”
“The key.”
Danielle pretended confusion.
“What key?”
The man grabbed Lily’s coat zipper.
The silver bird hung there.
“This one.”
So they had not opened it.
Good.
Danielle needed time.
“What is it?”
“Ask Thomas Vale.”
The video ended.
Marcus immediately ordered technicians to trace the signal.
Nothing.
Layered routing.
Professional.
Danielle looked at Melissa.
“Take us to Vale.”
Two hours later, they reached St. Matthew’s Monastery.
Thomas Vale was not there.
But his room had been searched recently.
On his desk sat an envelope.
DANIELLE CARTER.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Danielle,
If you are reading this, then Wade finally chose courage over fear.
The bird contains an encrypted storage device.
It holds everything.
Payments.
Names.
Recordings.
Enough to dismantle the organization.
Do not trust anyone simply because they carry a federal badge.
Especially Nathan Cole.
Danielle folded the letter.
Marcus stared at her.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
A monk entered quietly.
“Mr. Vale left yesterday.”
“Where?”
“He said he needed to correct an old mistake.”
“What mistake?”
The monk handed Danielle another note.
One address.
Abandoned Millstone Paper Mill.
Danielle knew instantly.
The kidnappers would be there.
Marcus called tactical units.
Danielle caught his arm.
“They’ll kill Lily if they see a convoy.”
“You’re not going alone.”
“I know.”
They developed a plan.
Danielle would approach visibly.
Tactical teams would remain outside the perimeter.
Melissa knew the mill.
She provided old blueprints.
At 11:38 p.m., Danielle walked through the mill’s rusted doors.
Alone.
Or apparently alone.
Nathan Cole stood beneath a hanging industrial lamp.
No mask.
No shame.
Lily sat twenty feet away.
Mercer was beside her.
Both alive.
Danielle’s eyes went to her daughter.
“Mom.”
“I’m right here.”
Cole smiled.
“You always were stubborn.”
“You kidnapped a child.”
“I protected twenty years of work.”
“You mean corruption.”
“I mean power.”
Danielle held up a laptop.
“The key only works with this.”
A lie.
Cole did not know that.
“Bring it.”
“Release Lily.”
Cole laughed.
“You’re negotiating badly.”
A voice came from the darkness.
“No. She isn’t.”
Thomas Vale stepped forward.
Cole’s expression changed.
Vale looked older than Danielle remembered.
Thinner.
But alive.
He held a folder.
“The original ledgers,” Vale said.
Cole stared at him.
“You should have died.”
“Wade said the same thing.”
Mercer looked down.
Vale moved closer.
“Let the child go.”
Cole drew a gun.
Everything happened quickly.
Mercer lunged sideways.
Lily screamed.
Danielle moved.
A shot exploded.
The light shattered.
Darkness swallowed the mill.
Danielle hit the floor.
“Lily!”
“Mom!”
Another shot.
Then another.
Agents stormed entrances.
Flashlights cut through darkness.
Danielle crawled toward Lily’s voice.
She found her behind machinery.
Alive.
Danielle wrapped her arms around her.
“It’s okay.”
Nearby, Mercer groaned.
He had been shot in the shoulder.
Vale was unharmed.
But Nathan Cole was gone.
A rear exit stood open.
Marcus approached.
“We’ll find him.”
Danielle looked at Lily.
The silver bird was missing.
“Marcus.”
“What?”
“Cole has the key.”
Then Thomas Vale shook his head.
“No.”
He reached into his pocket.
The silver bird rested in his palm.
“I switched it during the blackout.”
Danielle stared.
Vale smiled weakly.
“For once, we’re ahead.”
But an agent suddenly shouted from the entrance.
“Sir!”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
The agent held up his phone.
Nathan Cole had already sent a message to every major news organization in the state.
The attachment was titled:
May you like
SPECIAL AGENT DANIELLE CARTER — INTERNAL INVESTIGATION FILE.
And the first page accused Danielle herself of running the entire corruption network.
