Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Showdown

Friday afternoon arrived with a dark, overcast sky hanging over Manhattan. The top floor of the Blackwood Tower was charged with tension. The massive glass-walled boardroom was packed with board members, legal teams, and high-profile shareholders. At the head of the long marble table sat Arthur Sterling, looking like a victorious conqueror, with Victoria standing triumphantly right behind his chair, wearing a sharp white power suit.

Julian sat at the opposite end of the table, flanked by his legal counsel. He looked exhausted, but his posture was rigid, his expression unwavering.

"Let us bring this meeting to order," Arthur Sterling announced, his booming voice echoing through the silent room. "We are here today to vote on Motion 402—the immediate removal of Julian Blackwood as Chief Executive Officer due to gross neglect of duties and failure to protect shareholder value during a period of severe stock volatility."

"This volatility was artificially manufactured by your firm, Arthur," Julian said calmly, leaning forward. "You shorted our stock to panic the board."

"Business is business, Julian," Victoria interjected, a smug, cruel smile spreading across her face. "You lost your focus. You’re running a multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate, not a nursing home. You let personal sentimentality cloud your judgment, and now the markets are punishing us for it."

Several board members nodded in agreement, whispering among themselves. The tide was clearly turning in favor of the Sterlings.

"We have forty-two percent of the voting proxy," Arthur declared, raising a fountain pen. "With the support of the independent group, we have reached fifty-four percent. The vote is ready. Julian, you are officially ousted."

Victoria smirked down at Julian, leaning over the table. "You should have kept your mother in line, Julian. Now you both get to leave with nothing."

Just as Arthur raised his gavel to finalize the vote, the heavy double frosted-glass doors of the boardroom swung open with absolute authority.

Every head in the room turned.

Walking into the high-tech, modern boardroom was Evelyn Blackwood. She wasn't wearing a faded nightgown, nor did she look frail or confused. She wore a tailored black velvet suit, a double strand of rare pearls around her neck, and carried a sleek leather briefcase. Walking beside her was Maria, carrying a binder, and Marcus, flanked by two armed federal marshals.

The room went completely dead silent.

"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur barked, slamming his pen down. "This is a private corporate board meeting! Security, remove this woman!"

"Touch me, Arthur, and the federal marshals behind me will arrest you for grand fraud right in front of these cameras," Evelyn said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a razor-sharp authority that instantly paralyzed the room.

Victoria’s smirk faltered slightly. "What are you talking about, you senile old—"

"Silence, Victoria," Evelyn interrupted without even looking at her. She walked straight to the center of the table, looking directly into Arthur Sterling’s eyes. "Arthur, thirty years ago, you signed the Blackwood-Sterling Capital Accord. You borrowed forty million dollars from my late husband to save your father's failing bank. In exchange, you pledged thirty-five percent of all equity in the Sterling Group as collateral."

Arthur’s face turned an unhealthy shade of gray. His hands began to tremble. "That... that paper was destroyed in the 2008 fire..."

"Copies were," Evelyn said calmly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a stack of pristine, certified legal documents. "The original was stored in the Blackwood family vault. Certified by the state treasury just two hours ago."

She slapped the documents onto the glass table, sliding them directly toward the independent board members.

"As the sole executor of the Blackwood Estate," Evelyn announced, looking around the room, "I am officially foreclosing on the Sterling Group’s defaulted debt. As of twelve o'clock today, I am the controlling fifty-one percent shareholder of Sterling Group. Which means..."

Evelyn turned her gaze directly to Victoria, whose face was now entirely devoid of color.

"...Arthur Sterling no longer has the authority to vote on this board. And neither do you."
