Chapter 6 - The Night Dominic Chose Mercy

Bear crossed the library before the gunman could aim properly.

The shot struck the floor, splintering wood beneath the dog’s paws.

Bear leaped and clamped his teeth around the man’s forearm.

The weapon fell.

Dominic moved at the same instant.

He pulled Lily behind the stone fireplace, drew his gun, and fired once. The bullet hit the attacker’s thigh.

Caleb pressed his weapon harder against Gabriel’s temple.

“Drop it.”

Dominic kept his gun raised.

Vittorio watched with amused approval.

“You were always quick.”

“You were always a coward.”

Vittorio’s smile narrowed.

“Strong men delegate.”

“Dead men hide for twelve years.”

Evelyn struggled against the man holding her.

Blood had begun seeping through the bandage beneath her coat.

“Dominic,” Gabriel said. “Lily.”

Dominic understood.

The child came first.

He lowered his weapon and placed it on the floor.

“Move away from it,” Caleb ordered.

Dominic stepped back.

Vittorio entered the room fully.

Up close, age had altered him, but not softened him. His eyes were still pale and empty, the eyes Dominic remembered watching him endure punishment without sympathy.

Vittorio glanced toward Lily.

“She looks like Gabriel.”

“She has nothing to do with this.”

“She has everything to do with it. Her father stole from me.”

Gabriel’s voice remained calm.

“I copied records of money you stole from the city.”

Vittorio lifted his cane.

“Words depend entirely on ownership.”

“You don’t own the truth,” Lily said.

Everyone looked at her.

Dominic felt fear sharpen inside him.

Vittorio seemed delighted.

“A brave child.”

Bear released the wounded gunman and moved back toward Lily, growling.

Vittorio tilted his head.

“Your dog understands power better than you do.”

“He understands loyalty,” Lily replied.

Dominic saw Gabriel close his eyes briefly.

Not in fear.

In pride.

Vittorio looked at Dominic.

“You have grown sentimental.”

“You entered my home to threaten a child.”

“I entered my home.”

“This was never yours.”

“Everything you built came from what I taught you.”

Dominic’s voice dropped.

“You taught me what I never wanted to become.”

Vittorio laughed.

“Yet here you are. Men obey you. Officials fear you. Bodies disappear when you command it.”

Lily looked at Dominic.

Vittorio noticed.

“Has he not told you what he is?”

“She knows enough,” Dominic said.

“No child knows enough until she sees the blood beneath the suit.”

Dominic stared at the man who had shaped his worst instincts.

“Why are you here?”

“The drive.”

“It’s not in the house.”

Vittorio’s expression did not change.

“Caleb says otherwise.”

Dominic looked at his former security chief.

Caleb avoided his eyes.

“The drive was moved,” Dominic said.

“Where?”

“To someone you cannot reach.”

Vittorio stepped closer.

“Everyone can be reached.”

“That belief is why Gabriel defeated you.”

Vittorio struck Dominic across the face with the silver handle of his cane.

Lily cried out.

Dominic remained upright.

Blood ran from his lip.

“Tell me where the files are.”

“No.”

Vittorio struck him again.

Dominic staggered but did not fall.

Gabriel tried to move. Caleb tightened his hold.

“Stop,” Lily shouted.

Vittorio looked at her.

She stepped from behind the fireplace.

Dominic’s voice became sharp.

“Lily, stay back.”

“I know where the drive is.”

Gabriel stared at her.

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes, I do.”

Vittorio smiled.

Children were easier to frighten, he believed.

He did not know Lily.

“Bring it to me,” he said.

“It’s upstairs.”

“Caleb, take her.”

Dominic moved forward.

The nearest gunman aimed at his chest.

Lily held up a hand.

“Bear comes.”

Vittorio’s patience thinned.

“Fine.”

Caleb shoved Gabriel toward another guard and took Lily by the arm.

Bear followed, growling.

As they reached the staircase, Lily looked back at Dominic.

Her eyes moved briefly toward the ceiling.

Dominic understood.

The security system had failed, but the panic room above the east wing had an independent alarm connected directly to Marco’s team.

Lily was not leading Caleb to the drive.

She was leading him into a trap.

Dominic needed to keep Vittorio distracted.

“You should have killed me when I was young,” he said.

Vittorio watched Lily disappear upstairs.

“I tried.”

“No. You tried to control me.”

“And succeeded.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

Vittorio’s face hardened.

“You think protecting one child changes what you are?”

“No.”

“Then why risk your empire?”

“Because she is worth more than it.”

The answer surprised everyone, including Dominic.

Gabriel looked at him.

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

Vittorio shook his head.

“Pathetic.”

A siren began upstairs.

Gunfire followed.

Vittorio turned toward the stairs.

Dominic attacked.

He drove his shoulder into the older man and sent both of them crashing against the table. Gabriel struck the guard holding him with the back of his head. Evelyn twisted free and grabbed the fallen gun.

Shots exploded through the library.

Dominic wrestled Vittorio to the floor. The cane blade flashed between them, slicing Dominic’s forearm.

Vittorio was old but vicious.

He drove a knee into Dominic’s ribs and reached for a pistol hidden beneath his coat.

Dominic caught his wrist.

Across the room, Gabriel fought Caleb’s replacement. Evelyn fired into the ceiling, forcing another attacker to drop his weapon.

The library doors burst open.

Marco and six guards entered.

“Down!”

The remaining gunmen surrendered.

Vittorio did not.

He pulled the pistol free and aimed past Dominic.

At Lily.

She stood at the top of the stairs beside Caleb, whose hands had been secured with a panic-room restraint cable. Bear stood in front of her.

Dominic seized Vittorio’s wrist as the gun fired.

The bullet struck the railing.

Dominic twisted until the weapon dropped.

He pinned Vittorio beneath him.

Marco raised his gun.

“Say the word.”

For twenty years, Dominic had built his life around moments like this.

An enemy beneath him.

A loyal man waiting for permission.

A problem one bullet could end.

Vittorio looked up and smiled.

“You know what comes next.”

Dominic did.

He also saw Lily watching.

He heard Gabriel’s words.

This cannot end with bodies in warehouses.

Vittorio whispered, “If you let me live, I will come for her again.”

Dominic’s hand closed around his throat.

Rage told him to finish it.

Fear told him the same.

Then Lily spoke.

“Dominic.”

He looked up.

She was not begging for Vittorio’s life.

She was asking Dominic to keep his own.

He released the old man.

“Take him alive.”

Marco hesitated only a fraction of a second.

Then he handcuffed Vittorio.

The older man’s smile vanished.

“You think prison can hold me?”

“No,” Dominic said. “But the truth will bury you where bullets cannot.”

Federal prosecutor Naomi Price arrived before dawn.

Dominic had contacted her from the panic room after Vittorio entered the estate. Marco’s team had delayed the attackers long enough for federal agents to surround the property.

Price was a compact woman with a direct gaze and no visible reaction to the armed men throughout the mansion.

She reviewed the evidence with Gabriel and Evelyn.

“The files are enough for immediate warrants,” she said. “But we need testimony.”

“You’ll have it,” Gabriel replied.

Evelyn nodded.

Price looked at Dominic.

“And you?”

“I’m not part of their case.”

“You are now. Vittorio’s confession in the library was recorded by the independent security system. He referenced the organization, the stolen funds, and attempted murder.”

“Then use it.”

“I need you to testify about his network.”

Dominic’s expression cooled.

“That would expose my own operations.”

“Yes.”

Marco looked at him.

Price continued.

“You asked for lawful consequences. They are rarely convenient.”

“What protection does Lily receive?”

“Full federal protection for her and her parents.”

“And Bear?”

Price blinked.

“The dog?”

“He is not negotiable.”

“We can include the dog.”

Dominic looked toward Lily, who sat near the fire while Elena bandaged Bear’s paw.

“What happens to my people?”

“Those involved in violent crimes will be investigated. Legitimate employees will be protected.”

“You want me to destroy everything I built.”

“I want you to choose what survives.”

Dominic glanced at Marco.

His lieutenant gave the smallest nod.

Dominic had spent decades believing the empire was his identity.

But Lily had asked him to keep coming back.

An empire built on fear would always demand he leave.

“I’ll testify.”

Price studied him.

“You understand that immunity will be limited.”

“Yes.”

“You could serve time.”

“Yes.”

Lily had overheard.

She stood.

“No.”

Dominic turned.

“You said you’d come back.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then don’t go.”

He crouched in front of her.

“If I protect you by becoming the man Vittorio taught me to be, then he still wins.”

“I don’t care if he wins.”

“You will someday.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You’re leaving too.”

“No.”

“That’s what adults say before they go.”

Dominic looked at Gabriel and Evelyn.

Both were crying silently.

He took Lily’s hand.

“I am not running from you. I am taking responsibility so nobody can use my past to threaten your future.”

“What if they put you in prison?”

“Then you visit me.”

“Bear too?”

Dominic looked at Price.

She sighed.

“We’ll see what can be arranged.”

Lily threw her arms around Dominic’s neck.

He held her tightly.

“I hate this,” she whispered.

“So do I.”

“Promise you’ll come back.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“I promise.”

By sunrise, Arthur Hale had been arrested at his campaign office.

Victor Dane was captured trying to board a private plane.

Caleb agreed to testify in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Vittorio was transported in chains under federal guard.

News helicopters circled the city as reporters exposed the largest corruption scandal in state history.

Dominic Vale walked out of his mansion beside federal agents.

The city watched the feared crime boss surrender without a fight.

Lily stood at the front doors between Gabriel and Evelyn, Bear beside her.

Dominic paused before entering the car.

He looked back.

Lily held up the joined silver medallion.

Dominic placed one hand over his heart.

Then the door closed.

The car pulled away.

Lily did not cry.

She had already learned that goodbyes were not always endings.

May you like

But she also knew promises could break.

And for the next eighteen months, every decision Dominic made would determine whether his promise became another adult lie.
