Chapter 6 - The Battle For Justice And The Truth

The video played again.

And again.

I watched it so many times that the words stopped sounding like words.

They became something heavier.

Something impossible to ignore.

“Once Alex comes back, everything will look exactly like an accident.”

Marcus Vance’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he was discussing a business deal.

Not planning the destruction of a family.

The screen showed my living room.

The same room where Clara’s coffin had been placed.

The same room where Teresa cried beside my wife’s body.

The same room where everyone looked at me and told me a story they had created.

But now I knew.

The funeral had never been about mourning.

It had been a performance.

A carefully planned performance.

Detective Morgan stood beside me, watching the video with a completely different expression than before.

The investigator in her had taken over.

The emotion disappeared.

Only focus remained.

“Do not touch that phone again,” she said quietly.

I looked at her.

“What?”

“That device is now one of the most important pieces of evidence in this case.”

I slowly stepped back.

The phone sat on the kitchen counter.

Clara’s phone.

The phone they told me was missing.

The phone my mother took.

The phone that somehow ended up here.

Someone wanted me to find it.

The question was why.

Detective Morgan noticed my expression.

“What are you thinking?”

I stared at the screen.

“I think someone wants me to know the truth.”

She crossed her arms.

“Or someone wants you to believe a version of the truth.”

That stopped me.

Because she was right.

A person who had planned everything this carefully wouldn’t leave evidence behind by accident.

Marcus Vance was too smart.

Derek was too careful.

Teresa was too desperate.

Someone had placed that phone here.

Someone wanted me to see that video.

But why?

Before I could answer, my own phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

My entire body became tense.

Detective Morgan immediately noticed.

“Don’t answer.”

But I already knew who it was.

Marcus.

I picked up.

“Alex.”

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

The same voice he used during company meetings.

The same voice he used when he convinced people he was the smartest person in the room.

“You found Clara’s phone.”

It wasn’t a question.

My grip tightened.

“How do you know?”

A short pause.

Then:

“Because you were always going to find it.”

My eyes moved toward the kitchen.

“You planted it.”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

“Clara did.”

The words hit me.

“What?”

“She knew you would come looking.”

I said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“Your wife was intelligent. She understood that fear makes people predictable. She knew you would not stop.”

“You killed her.”

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“I tried to save you from what she discovered.”

I almost laughed.

“Save me?”

“You have no idea what you are dealing with.”

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.”

“No, Alex.”

His tone changed.

For the first time, I heard something different.

Not confidence.

Frustration.

“You think this is about Clara.”

Silence.

“It isn’t.”

My heart slowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your wife was looking in the wrong direction.”

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Lily.

“Explain.”

But Marcus didn’t.

Instead, he said:

“Ask your father about the night everything changed.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Detective Morgan looked at me.

“What did he say?”

I swallowed.

“He told me to ask my father about the accident.”

Her expression changed.

“Your father’s accident?”

I nodded.

“He knows about it.”

Before she could respond, we heard movement upstairs.

Lily.

I immediately went to her.

She was standing in the hallway.

Still wearing the same clothes from the funeral.

Still holding the doll.

But her face had changed.

She wasn’t crying.

She was listening.

“Lily?”

She looked at me.

“Daddy…”

I knelt down.

“What’s wrong?”

She looked toward my father’s room.

“Grandpa told Mommy the truth.”

My heart stopped.

“What truth?”

She hugged the doll tighter.

“About the truck.”

The truck.

The accident.

The one everyone said was random.

The one that changed my father’s life.

“What did Grandpa tell Mommy?”

Lily looked down.

“He said Mr. Vance made the truck come there.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

Detective Morgan walked closer.

“Lily, are you sure?”

The little girl nodded.

“Mommy was angry.”

“Why?”

“Because Grandpa said Daddy was next.”

The hallway became silent.

My daughter’s words echoed in my mind.

Daddy was next.

Not Clara.

Me.

Marcus wasn’t just covering up Clara’s discovery.

He was protecting something bigger.

Something that started years ago.

I went back to my father’s room.

Arthur was awake.

When he saw my face, he already knew.

“You knew,” I said.

His eyes filled with sadness.

I sat beside him.

“Tell me everything.”

His hand moved toward the notepad.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

His writing was slow.

But determined.

FIVE YEARS AGO.

I nodded.

“After the accident?”

He wrote:

BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.

I frowned.

“Before?”

He nodded.

Then wrote:

MARCUS WAS STEALING FROM THE COMPANY.

I stared at the words.

“Illegal money transfers?”

He nodded.

“He framed you?”

Arthur looked away.

Then wrote:

I FOUND PROOF.

My heart sank.

“And Clara found the same proof?”

He nodded.

Then wrote:

SHE FOUND MORE.

I looked toward Detective Morgan.

“She knew.”

My father wrote another sentence.

THEY WERE AFRAID OF HER.

The room became quiet.

Because I finally understood.

Clara wasn’t killed because she was weak.

She was killed because she was dangerous.

Because she found something powerful people wanted buried.

A noise suddenly came from outside.

A car door.

Detective Morgan immediately moved toward the window.

Everyone froze.

A black SUV was parked outside.

Not hiding.

Not leaving.

Just sitting there.

Watching.

My instinct was to move toward Lily.

Detective Morgan stopped me.

“Stay back.”

The SUV’s driver door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not Marcus.

Not Derek.

Someone else.

He walked toward the house slowly.

Then stopped at the front gate.

He placed an envelope down.

And walked away.

One of the officers outside retrieved it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Detective Morgan looked at it first.

Then handed it to me.

My stomach dropped.

It was Clara.

Alive.

The night before she died.

Standing in front of a building I recognized.

Vance Transportation headquarters.

But that wasn’t what shocked me.

It was the person standing beside her.

The person she was talking to.

My father.

Arthur.

My father who supposedly could barely move.

My father who everyone treated like he was helpless.

My father was standing.

Walking.

Holding documents.

And Clara was looking at him like she had just discovered something unbelievable.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

YOUR FATHER KNOWS THE WHOLE TRUTH.

I turned slowly toward Arthur.

For the first time since I came home...

I wondered if the person who had been trying to save me...

Was also the person who had been hiding something from me.

My father looked into my eyes.

And then, with shaking hands...

He wrote one final sentence.

I DID IT TO PROTECT YOU.

I stared at those words.

Because suddenly the truth became more complicated.

Marcus Vance was not the only person keeping secrets.

May you like

And before I could uncover the truth about my wife’s death...

I had to discover the truth about my own father.
