Chapter 12 - The Man Who Looked Like Dad

Jake refused to breathe for several seconds.
“That’s not Dad.”
His mother stared at the photograph.
“It looks like him.”
“Dad is dead.”
“Yes.”
Aaron took the image.
Facial analysis showed a close match.
Not exact.
Jake’s mother sat slowly.
“Michael had a brother.”
Jake stared.
“What?”
“Half brother. Younger. They stopped speaking before you were born.”
Another secret.
Jake almost laughed from exhaustion.
“What was his name?”
“David Reynolds.”
Records showed David had disappeared from public life seventeen years earlier.
He had worked overseas.
Private security.
And briefly, Northbridge.
Jake’s anger returned.
“Does every branch of my family have a conspiracy?”
His mother gave a helpless laugh through tears.
“Apparently.”
David had entered her home not to threaten her.
Security footage showed him placing something inside the garage.
The same garage where Michael’s locked box had been stored.
They searched.
Behind a wall panel was another container.
Inside:
Michael’s final research.
And a videotape.
Jake watched.
His father appeared older than in most family videos.
“Jake, if David brought this to you, then things got worse than I hoped.”
Jake closed his eyes briefly.
Michael explained that David had infiltrated Northbridge after Michael left the service.
They did not speak publicly because they needed distance.
David continued the investigation quietly.
After Michael died, David vanished to protect the archive.
General Cross said, “So where is David now?”
Aaron checked.
The photograph was three weeks old.
They traced a vehicle.
David was living under another name in Missouri.
Jake drove there with his mother.
No tactical team.
No general.
No conspiracy room.
Just family.
David opened the door.
He looked enough like Michael that Jake’s mother cried immediately.
David stared at Jake.
“You got tall.”
Jake laughed despite himself.
“You haven’t seen me since I was eight.”
“I noticed.”
David gave them the final pieces.
Sloane had been the ideological founder.
Jonathan had built Northbridge into an organization.
But Michael and David spent decades quietly constructing the evidence trail that eventually made prosecution possible.
“Why not come forward earlier?” Jake asked.
“Because we never had the ledger.”
“Booth Seven.”
David nodded.
“Jonathan kept the only complete record himself. Your dad knew where.”
Jake understood his father’s strange contingency.
Harbor Light.
General Cross.
Booth Seven.
A random decent person.
“He really trusted chance.”
David smiled.
“No. He trusted character.”
Jake looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
“Michael believed systems become predictable. Corrupt people plan around incentives. Money. Fear. Career. Reputation.”
David leaned back.
“But kindness with no expected reward is hard to model.”
Jake thought about twelve dollars and eighty-six cents.
His father had not planned for Jake specifically.
He could not have.
But he had believed that eventually someone would do something the network could not explain.
And that unexplained action would make them react.
Their reaction exposed them.
Jake shook his head.
“That is the dumbest brilliant plan I’ve ever heard.”
David smiled.
“Exactly what I told him.”
For the first time, Jake felt closer to his father’s hidden life instead of betrayed by it.
Then David gave him one last file.
“Michael wanted Nathaniel Cross to see this.”
Jake returned to base.
General Cross watched the video alone first.
Then called Ethan.
Then Jake.
Michael appeared on-screen.
“Nathaniel, if this reaches you, Ethan may already be in danger.”
Cross lowered his head.
Michael continued.
“You will want to solve everything yourself. Don’t.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“He knew you.”
Cross ignored him.
“Trust your son. Trust people below your rank. Trust the person nobody important notices.”
Jake looked at Cross.
Michael’s final words were simple.
“Power makes people visible. Character reveals them.”
The video ended.
No conspiracy remained behind it.
No hidden code.
No new enemy.
May you like
Just a message from a dead man.
For once, a secret actually ended.
