Chapter 5 - The Man Across the Street

Mark grabbed Ellie and stepped backward.
"Who's there?"
The door opened.
A hospital security officer entered.
Mark nearly collapsed.
"Sir, Officer Carter asked us to move you."
Minutes later, father and daughter were transferred to a secured floor.
Meanwhile, police identified the neighbor as Charles Vance.
Vance had worked as a driver for the medical transport company.
Sarah's files showed he had transported falsified patients.
David had tried to expose him.
Hale protected him.
Seven years later, when Mark reopened Sarah's old emails, Vance noticed.
He lived across the street deliberately.
He had been watching Mark for years.
That revelation devastated Mrs. Parker.
"I thought he was just a neighbor."
"So did Mark," Rachel said.
Police traced Vance's vehicle to a motel.
He wasn't there.
But David was.
Alive.
Wounded.
David finally explained everything.
He had approached Mark at the pharmacy because Vance was watching.
He intended to move Mark somewhere safe.
But Hale's people intercepted them.
David escaped.
Mark was captured.
"Why fake your death?"
Rachel asked.
"Because Hale tried once already."
David produced one final piece of evidence.
A recording Sarah had made the night she died.
Hale threatened her.
Sarah refused to surrender the ledger.
The recording ended with Sarah saying:
"If anything happens to me, Mark raises Ellie knowing I loved them both."
Mark listened silently.
Seven years of uncertainty ended in one terrible certainty.
Sarah's death had not been an accident.
But Rachel still needed Hale.
The next morning, Vance contacted Mark.
Not police.
Mark.
He demanded Sarah's original flash drive.
In exchange, he promised Hale.
Rachel knew it was a trap.
They arranged the exchange anyway.
The location was an abandoned roadside diner.
Mark carried a duplicate drive.
Rachel and tactical officers waited nearby.
Vance appeared first.
Then Hale.
The doctor looked older than his photographs.
Calm.
Respectable.
Exactly the kind of man people trusted without thinking.
"You destroyed a family," Mark said.
Hale smiled.
"Your wife destroyed herself."
Mark stepped forward.
Rachel's voice came through his hidden earpiece.
"Stay calm."
Hale demanded the drive.
Mark held it up.
"Tell me what happened to Sarah."
Hale laughed.
Then, because arrogant men often believed confession was power, he told him.
Sarah had threatened to contact federal investigators.
Hale followed her.
He forced her car off the road.
He believed the ledger died with her.
He never knew about Mr. Buttons.
That confession was enough.
Rachel gave the signal.
Police moved.
Vance ran.
Hale reached beneath his coat.
"Hands!"
Rachel advanced.
Hale froze.
Within seconds he was on the ground.
Vance made it twenty yards before officers caught him.
Mark stood in the middle of the diner parking lot.
Seven years of grief had finally acquired names.
But then Rachel's radio crackled.
"Officer Carter."
"Go."
"We've got another person at Bennett's house."
"Who?"
"Unknown male. Says he has something belonging to Sarah."
Rachel looked at Mark.
May you like
The officer continued.
"And he says Sarah told him to give it only to Ellie."
