Chapter 8 - The Name Hidden Behind Project V

The name appeared on the screen.

I stared at it.

My mind refused to accept what I was seeing.

Because the person who created Project V...

The person who designed the system that changed aviation forever...

The person whose identity had been hidden for forty years...

Was not a stranger.

It was me.

EVELYN CARTER.

The cockpit went silent.

Mark looked at the screen.

Then at me.

"No."

His voice was barely a whisper.

"That doesn't make sense."

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

Because somewhere deep inside, I knew.

Not the whole truth.

But enough.

The missing memories.

The erased records.

The reason people wanted me hidden.

It wasn't because I discovered Project V.

It was because I was part of creating it.

Nathan watched my reaction.

"You really don't remember."

I looked at him.

"What did you do to me?"

His expression changed.

Pain.

Not guilt.

Pain.

"We didn't do anything."

"Then why can't I remember?"

Nathan looked away.

"Because you chose not to."

The words hit harder than anything else.

I stepped back.

"No."

Adrian moved closer.

"Evelyn."

I looked at him.

"Don't."

My voice shook.

"Everyone keeps telling me pieces of my own life like I'm a stranger."

The aircraft continued moving toward the hidden facility.

The warning lights flashed.

But nobody cared anymore.

The biggest emergency wasn't the plane.

It was me.

Nathan took a breath.

"Forty years ago, after the final test, you discovered the truth."

"What truth?"

He looked at the screen.

"Project V wasn't just predicting aircraft failures."

A pause.

"It was predicting human decisions."

I felt cold.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian answered.

"It learned how pilots think."

Mark looked confused.

"That's impossible."

Nathan shook his head.

"Not anymore."

He pointed at the system.

"The program studied every decision made during every flight. Every correction. Every instinct. Every mistake."

I looked at the screen.

The aircraft was still responding.

Not to us.

To something else.

"It was learning people."

Nathan nodded.

"And Evelyn was the only person who understood what it became."

My memories started returning.

Not completely.

Fragments.

A room.

A screen.

Nathan standing beside me.

Adrian arguing with someone.

A warning.

A decision.

A voice saying:

"Erase her memory."

I grabbed my head.

The pain came suddenly.

Mark reached toward me.

"Are you okay?"

I pushed him away.

Because another memory appeared.

A conversation.

Forty years ago.

Inside the Project V facility.

My younger voice.

"I won't let them use it."

Another voice.

"You don't have a choice."

I looked at Nathan.

"Who ordered my memory erased?"

Nobody answered.

That was the answer.

I turned toward Adrian.

"You know."

His eyes lowered.

"I was there."

The aircraft shook.

Hard.

The hidden facility was getting closer.

The captain looked at the navigation system.

"We're approaching the coordinates."

A small island appeared on the radar.

An island that didn't exist on any public map.

Nathan looked through the windshield.

"Home."

Nobody corrected him.

Because everyone understood.

This wasn't a destination.

It was a grave.

The aircraft began descending automatically.

The controls moved by themselves.

The captain tried to override.

Nothing happened.

"The system won't release control."

Nathan walked toward the console.

"It won't."

The captain looked at him.

"Why?"

Nathan stared at the screen.

"Because it recognizes Evelyn."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Nathan looked at me.

"The system was built around your decisions."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Yes."

He pointed at the display.

"Every test. Every simulation. Every successful prediction."

His voice became quieter.

"It learned from you."

I stared at my reflection in the cockpit window.

An old woman.

A forgotten pilot.

The creator of the thing hunting us.

The aircraft descended through the clouds.

And below us, the hidden facility appeared.

A massive structure buried inside the mountain.

Still active.

After forty years.

The captain whispered:

"That place should be abandoned."

Adrian looked at him.

"It was."

"Then why is it powered?"

Nobody answered.

Because we already knew.

Someone had been waiting.

The aircraft landed.

Smoothly.

Too smoothly.

Like the plane had been guided by someone who knew every movement.

The engines shut down.

The silence afterward felt wrong.

Nobody moved.

Then the cockpit door opened.

Not by itself.

This time.

Someone opened it.

A man stood outside.

Security uniform.

Older.

Calm.

Waiting.

He looked directly at me.

"Evelyn Carter."

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from the radio.

Not from a recording.

From my memories.

He stepped closer.

"You finally came back."

Nathan immediately moved between us.

"Stay away from her."

The man smiled.

"Still protecting her after all these years?"

Adrian's face changed.

"You."

The man looked at him.

"You're still alive too."

Mark looked between everyone.

"Who is this?"

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was impossible.

The man looked at me.

"You don't remember me, do you?"

I stared.

A name appeared in my mind.

A name I thought belonged to someone else.

A name connected to the beginning of everything.

"Dr. Victor Hale."

Nathan went completely still.

Adrian whispered:

"No..."

The man smiled.

"Hello, Evelyn."

My heart raced.

Because Commander Thomas Hale had been dead.

Nathan Cole had been declared dead.

Adrian Vale had disappeared.

But this man...

This man was the person who signed the original Project V documents.

The person who started everything.

The person whose name was removed from history.

He looked at the silver pin in my hand.

Then he said:

"You weren't erased because you failed."

A pause.

"You were erased because you succeeded."

The facility lights suddenly turned on.

One by one.

Revealing hundreds of screens behind him.

Every screen showed the same thing.

My face.

At different ages.

Different moments.

Different flights.

Different memories.

Then one final screen activated.

A recording from forty years ago.

A younger version of me appeared.

Standing inside this exact room.

Looking directly at the camera.

And my younger self said:

"If you're watching this..."

May you like

She looked terrified.

"...it means I made the wrong choice."
