Chapter 6 - The Lie Daniel Left Behind

I stared at the photograph.

Lorenzo stood across from me.

"What does it say?"

I handed it to him.

He read the words.

His face became unreadable.

"It isn't Marco."

"No."

"Then who?"

Only two possibilities remained.

Daniel.

Or Lorenzo.

My pulse accelerated.

"Did you betray him?"

"No."

"You've lied before."

"Yes."

The admission surprised me.

"But not about killing Daniel."

"What did you lie about?"

Lorenzo sat.

The truth finally came.

Daniel had planned to disappear.

Not die.

The federal investigation had become too dangerous.

Hale had arranged new identities for Daniel, me and Emma.

Daniel intended to tell me the night he died.

Lorenzo opposed the plan.

He believed running would make us vulnerable.

They argued.

Lorenzo threatened to expose Daniel's cooperation unless he abandoned the plan.

"That was the betrayal," Lorenzo said.

"You were going to expose him?"

"To Hale. Not Vittorio."

"But Daniel didn't know that."

"No."

My anger returned.

"You frightened him."

"Yes."

"And he died thinking you might betray him."

Lorenzo looked down.

"Probably."

There was no defense.

No excuse.

Only regret.

That mattered.

Not enough to erase what happened.

Enough to make truth possible.

Hale later confirmed Lorenzo's account.

Daniel's notes did too.

The mystery was finally closing.

Marco accepted a cooperation agreement.

His betrayal had been real, but complicated.

Vittorio had threatened Teresa.

Marco fed him information to protect his mother.

Then became trapped.

He would still face prison.

But his testimony ensured Vittorio would never walk free.

Father Matteo confessed.

The corrupt officials began turning on one another.

Within weeks, the organization that had protected Vittorio collapsed.

And Lorenzo made a choice nobody expected.

He dismantled the illegal side of the Duca empire.

Not overnight.

Not magically.

He sold businesses.

Closed accounts.

Turned records over to Hale.

Accepted consequences.

Some investigations remained.

But Daniel's evidence distinguished Lorenzo's crimes from Vittorio's murders and corruption.

For the first time, Lorenzo seemed interested in becoming something other than feared.

Emma recovered.

Her fever disappeared.

She returned to the mansion once more because I needed to collect my belongings.

I had resigned.

Lorenzo didn't argue.

"You deserve a normal employer."

"I deserve an employer who doesn't test toddlers with five thousand dollars."

A faint smile appeared.

"That too."

Emma ran into the library.

The yellow blanket trailed behind her.

Lorenzo was standing beside the fireplace.

She held out Daniel's bracelet.

"Here."

He looked confused.

"This belongs to you."

"I know."

"Then keep it."

She shook her head.

"Daddy said share."

I swallowed.

Daniel had said that.

Constantly.

Lorenzo crouched.

"I can't take your father's bracelet."

Emma thought.

Then opened the clasp.

She wrapped it around Lorenzo's wrist.

It barely fit.

"There."

Lorenzo looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

Emma hugged him.

His arms remained frozen for a second.

Then slowly closed around her.

That image stayed with me.

A feared man.

A tiny child.

A yellow blanket between them.

Daniel's bracelet around Lorenzo's wrist.

But our story wasn't finished.

Three months later, I received a letter.

No return address.

Inside was a key.

Another key.

This one carried the number 411.

There was also a note.

Daniel's handwriting.

Soph,

If 317 failed, use 411.

I immediately called Hale.

Then Lorenzo.

We met at South Station.

Locker 411 still existed.

The key opened it.

Inside was one envelope.

No money.

No evidence.

Only legal documents.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel had purchased something before his death.

A property.

Under a trust.

For Emma.

"What property?" Lorenzo asked.

I turned the page.

The address was familiar.

Very familiar.

I looked at Lorenzo.

He looked at me.

Neither of us understood.

May you like

Because Daniel Russo had somehow purchased part ownership in Duca Construction four years earlier.

And according to the final document, my three-year-old daughter now legally controlled the shares.
