The File With Her Name / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - What Lorenzo Had Been Hiding

Daniel looked almost unchanged.

That was the worst part.

Same careful haircut.

Same controlled smile.

Same face that had once looked across restaurant tables and told Meline she would be prettier if she lost weight.

Meline felt nothing.

Not love.

Not grief.

Only recognition.

"You died."

Daniel smiled.

"So did your parents."

Helen flinched.

Lorenzo moved between them.

Daniel laughed.

"There he is. The devoted husband."

"Leave."

"You don't own the road, Lorenzo."

"No. But you won't leave it standing if you come closer."

Meline stepped beside her husband.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

"Lorenzo."

He looked at her.

"Don't speak for me."

He moved aside.

Daniel noticed.

Interesting.

"You've changed," he said.

Meline almost smiled.

"You haven't."

That erased his grin.

"What do you want?"

"The access key."

"I don't have it."

"Not yet."

Daniel looked toward the farmhouse.

"Your father designed the archive so only his daughter could activate it."

"Then you're wasting your time."

"No. I'm waiting for you to stop pretending you don't want answers."

He was right about one thing.

Meline wanted answers.

But not from him.

Adrian appeared behind her.

"Police are coming."

Daniel smiled.

"No, they aren't."

Adrian checked his phone.

No signal.

Daniel's men had blocked communications.

The confrontation remained tense but still.

No one moved toward violence.

Meline realized Daniel didn't want them harmed.

He needed her.

That gave her power.

"Fine," she said.

Lorenzo turned.

"Meline."

"I'll open it."

Daniel smiled.

"But everybody comes inside."

Daniel hesitated.

"Why?"

"Because I'm done having conversations where half the people know secrets the other half don't."

Something like pride flickered across Lorenzo's face.

Meline ignored it.

They returned to the attic.

Helen assembled the three access pieces.

A handwritten code.

A metal key.

A sequence of numbers Lorenzo had memorized.

The recorder contained instructions.

Meline entered everything into an old terminal hidden beneath the floorboards.

The screen illuminated.

MICHAEL HAYES ARCHIVE.

ENTER FINAL AUTHORIZATION.

A question appeared.

WHAT DID I TELL YOU WHEN YOU WERE AFRAID OF THE DARK?

Meline began crying.

She remembered.

Her father beside her childhood bed.

There is nothing in darkness that truth cannot survive.

She typed it.

The archive opened.

Thousands of files appeared.

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Meline saw it.

"So that's why you came."

Daniel said nothing.

She opened the first directory.

Names.

Transactions.

Recorded conversations.

Enough evidence to dismantle the network permanently.

And then—

a scheduled distribution notice.

If the archive was opened successfully, encrypted copies would automatically be sent to multiple attorneys, investigators, and journalists.

Daniel lunged toward the computer.

Adrian blocked him.

"Too late."

Daniel stared at Meline.

"You have no idea what you've done."

"Actually," she said, "I think this might be the first thing I've done with complete information."

Sirens sounded faintly in the distance.

The signal blocker had failed.

Daniel's men began leaving.

Daniel looked toward Lorenzo.

"You think she stays with you after she sees your file?"

Meline turned.

"What file?"

Daniel smiled.

There it was.

One final weapon.

"Ask your husband about Project Meline."

Lorenzo went pale.

Meline's stomach dropped.

"What is Project Meline?"

Lorenzo said nothing.

Daniel laughed.

"That's what I thought."

Authorities arrived minutes later.

Daniel was taken away for questioning under multiple outstanding investigations connected to the archive.

Meline barely noticed.

She stood opposite Lorenzo in the farmhouse kitchen.

"Tell me."

Lorenzo looked exhausted.

"Project Meline was my contingency plan."

"For what?"

"If Daniel found you."

"What kind of plan?"

"New identity. New home. Money. Protection."

Meline stared at him.

"Without asking me."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Vermont."

"You bought me a house?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"Before we married."

She laughed once.

"You had an entire life prepared for me."

"If something happened."

"Without you?"

Lorenzo looked away.

Understanding came slowly.

"It wasn't a house for us."

"No."

"It was for me."

"Yes."

"Because you expected to die."

Lorenzo's silence confirmed it.

Meline sat down.

For the first time, she saw another side of his deception.

Not control alone.

Fear.

Lorenzo had planned for a future in which he disappeared and she survived.

That did not excuse him.

But it complicated her anger.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was selfish."

She looked up.

"I knew if I told you the truth before we married, you might leave. And by then..."

His voice broke slightly.

"I couldn't stand the thought."

Meline whispered, "So you took the choice away from me."

"Yes."

Lorenzo met her eyes.

"And there is no justification for that."

Before Meline could answer, Adrian entered.

He held another file.

His expression was grim.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

"The archive contains a message addressed specifically to Meline."

"From Dad?"

Adrian shook his head.

"No."

He placed the file on the table.

The sender's name appeared on top.

LORENZO MORETTI.

The date was two weeks before Meline and Lorenzo's wedding.

She looked at her husband.

Lorenzo stared at the document.

May you like

Then whispered:

"I never wrote that."
