Chapter 4 - The Man Who Knew My Husband Was In Danger

I stared at the photograph.

My father.

Standing behind Ethan.

Two days after the accident.

My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Because if the picture was real, then everything I believed about that week was a lie.

My father stepped closer.

“Claire…”

I raised my hand.

He stopped.

Not because I was his daughter.

Because he saw my expression.

He knew something had changed.

The old Claire would have listened.

The old Claire would have searched for an explanation.

The old Claire would have trusted him.

But that woman was gone.

“She was taken two days after the accident?”

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

I looked at my father.

“Where were you?”

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Six months ago, I thought losing Ethan and my children was the worst pain I would ever feel.

I was wrong.

The worst pain was discovering that the people who were supposed to protect me knew something was coming.

And they let it happen.

My father sat down.

For the first time in my life, I saw him look old.

Not tired.

Old.

“I was trying to help Ethan.”

I laughed quietly.

“You were trying to help him?”

My fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Then why was he afraid?”

My father looked at me.

“He wasn’t afraid of me.”

“Then who?”

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

My mother began crying again.

“Your father thought he could handle it.”

I turned toward her.

“Handle what?”

She looked away.

I walked closer.

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“You don’t get to do that.”

She looked at me.

“You don’t get to hide behind tears now.”

Her face broke.

Because she knew I was right.

“I spent months wondering why you didn’t come.”

My voice shook.

“I wondered if maybe you were angry at me.”

I looked at my father.

“I wondered if maybe I did something wrong.”

My mother covered her mouth.

“But the truth was…”

I looked at all three of them.

“You knew something was happening.”

Nobody spoke.

“You knew Ethan was in trouble.”

Still silence.

“And you let me walk into that funeral believing I lost everything randomly.”

My father stood.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Now you listen.”

The room became completely quiet.

“My children died.”

My voice cracked.

“My husband died.”

I pointed at the photograph.

“And while I was burying them, you were hiding the truth from me.”

My father looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.”

That sentence.

That exact sentence.

Made something inside me break.

“Everyone says that.”

I shook my head.

“My entire life, people have used those words when they really mean they were protecting themselves.”

Daniel looked at me.

He understood.

Because he had seen this before.

I turned to him.

“What did Ethan find?”

Daniel opened the folder again.

“He discovered money transfers.”

“From my father’s charity?”

“Yes.”

“And what does that have to do with the accident?”

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation returned.

The one that told me the truth was worse than the question.

“Claire…”

“Tell me.”

He looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“Ethan believed the crash wasn’t an accident.”

The room stopped.

My mother gasped.

Melissa covered her mouth.

I stared at Daniel.

“No.”

The word left my lips automatically.

Because accepting it meant accepting something impossible.

The accident that took my family.

The accident I replayed every night.

The truck.

The road.

The moment everything changed.

“You’re saying someone did this?”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“We don’t know for certain.”

“But Ethan thought so.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my father.

“Did you know?”

My father didn’t answer immediately.

That was the answer.

I walked away from him.

I couldn’t look at him.

Because every memory was changing.

Every moment.

Every conversation.

Every time he told me everything would be okay.

Was he lying?

Or was he afraid?

I didn’t know which was worse.

Melissa suddenly spoke.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“What?”

She looked at me.

Her face was pale.

“The accident.”

My heart started racing.

“Melissa.”

She wiped her tears.

“I heard Dad talking before the funeral.”

My father looked at her.

“Stop.”

She ignored him.

“He was on the phone.”

My father’s voice became louder.

“Melissa.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You told me we had to keep Claire away from the truth.”

I felt the room disappear.

“What truth?”

Melissa looked at me.

“I don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me what you know.”

She swallowed.

“Ethan was going to expose someone.”

“Who?”

She looked at my father.

Then whispered:

“Someone close.”

My father closed his eyes.

Daniel moved quickly.

“Claire, you need to leave.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Right now.”

“Why?”

He walked toward the window.

His entire body became tense.

“Because whoever did this knows Ethan left something behind.”

I looked at the letter in my hand.

“You mean this?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

“How do you know?”

He didn’t answer.

Then I noticed something.

The way he kept looking outside.

Like he was expecting someone.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, across the street, a black sedan was parked.

The engine was running.

I stared at it.

“How long has that car been there?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me.

“Daniel.”

He finally spoke.

“Since I arrived.”

My father stepped toward the window.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who is it?”

Nobody answered.

Then the car door opened.

A man stepped out.

He didn’t look around.

He didn’t hide.

He simply walked toward my house.

Like he knew exactly where he was going.

My father whispered something.

A name.

A name I had never heard before.

“Marcus.”

I looked at him.

“Who is Marcus?”

My father didn’t respond.

Because the man was already at the front door.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Calm.

Confident.

Everyone froze.

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

The message contained only four words.

“Ask your father why.”

I looked up.

My father was staring at the door.

And for the first time in my life…

May you like

I saw him terrified.

The door handle slowly turned.
