The Family He Left Behind / Chapter 5 / 7

Chapter 5 - The Night Everything Changed

The person standing outside my house was Mark.

I knew it before he knocked.

I knew it before I saw his face clearly under the porch light.

Because there was only one person in the world who could make my heart feel both angry and broken at the same time.

My husband.

The man who left.

The man who lied.

The man who was now standing outside my door like he was the one afraid.

My phone was still in my hand.

Daniel's name was on the screen.

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Everyone knew something except me.

Mark.

Daniel.

Rebecca.

Maybe even people I had trusted for years.

Everyone had pieces of my life that I didn't have.

And I was tired of being the last person to know the truth about my own family.

The knocking came again.

"Sarah."

Mark's voice.

Soft.

Careful.

Like he was approaching an injured animal.

I walked toward the door but didn't open it.

"What do you want?"

A pause.

Then:

"Please let me explain."

I almost laughed.

Explain.

That word had become his favorite.

Explain the late nights.

Explain Rebecca.

Explain leaving.

Explain Daniel.

Explain why my entire marriage seemed to have hidden rooms I never knew existed.

"How long were you planning to keep lying to me?"

Silence.

That was always his answer first.

Silence.

Because silence meant he was choosing which truth to give me.

"Sarah, I know you're angry."

"Angry?"

My voice rose.

"You think I'm angry?"

I looked at the family photos hanging on the wall.

At Mark smiling beside our children.

At the man I thought I knew.

"I'm trying to understand how I spent sixteen years married to someone who apparently had another life."

"That's not fair."

The words came quickly.

Too quickly.

I stepped back from the door.

"Not fair?"

"Sarah—"

"No."

I gripped the phone tighter.

"You don't get to tell me what's fair."

The house was quiet behind me.

My children were sleeping upstairs.

My entire world was sleeping while I stood there trying to figure out why it was falling apart.

"Who is Daniel?"

Mark didn't answer.

Again.

"Who is he?"

Finally, his voice changed.

"He was someone I knew before you."

"That isn't an answer."

"It is complicated."

"There it is again."

I closed my eyes.

"Everything is complicated when you don't want to tell the truth."

The silence lasted several seconds.

Then Mark spoke.

"Daniel was involved in something dangerous."

I froze.

Dangerous.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you need to stop looking into this."

I stared at the door.

"Are you threatening me?"

"No."

His voice became desperate.

"I'm trying to protect you."

I hated that sentence.

Because everyone who hurt you always wanted you to believe they were protecting you.

"I don't need protection from the truth, Mark."

"You don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

A long pause.

Then he said something I never expected.

"Daniel saved Lily's life."

Everything stopped.

The room.

The sound.

My breathing.

"What?"

Mark swallowed.

"I never wanted you to know."

My hand moved away from the door.

"Know what?"

He didn't answer.

"Mark."

His voice became quieter.

"The night Lily was born wasn't what you think."

I felt sick.

Because Lily's birth was one of the most important memories of my life.

The hospital lights.

The exhaustion.

The fear.

Mark holding my hand.

The moment they placed our daughter in my arms.

It was the day I became a mother.

The day I believed we became a family.

"What are you talking about?"

"I can't explain this outside."

I looked at the door.

"Then explain it inside."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

And that scared me.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel may be watching."

I felt a chill.

"Where is he?"

Mark didn't respond.

"Where is Daniel?"

Another silence.

Then:

"He came back because he wants something."

I looked down at the envelope still sitting on the floor.

The hospital photo.

The words on the back.

Ask Mark who saved Lily.

"What does he want?"

Mark whispered:

"Revenge."

The call I was still holding suddenly disconnected.

I looked at the door.

Mark was still standing outside.

But now he looked different.

Not like a guilty husband.

Like a man who was afraid.

I opened the door.

Only halfway.

Mark looked older than he had three days earlier.

His face was tired.

His eyes were full of something I couldn't recognize.

Regret.

Maybe.

Fear.

Definitely.

"Come in," I said.

He stepped inside slowly.

The house that had once belonged to both of us suddenly felt like enemy territory.

He looked around.

At the children's backpacks.

At the family pictures.

At the life he walked away from.

"I miss them."

The words made me angry.

Not because they were false.

Because they came too late.

"You miss them?"

He nodded.

"I never stopped loving them."

I stared at him.

"Then why did you leave?"

He looked away.

"I thought..."

"What?"

He rubbed his face.

"I thought I could fix everything."

"By leaving?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"By making sure they were safe."

I stared at him.

"Safe from what?"

He didn't answer.

And I knew.

There was another secret.

Another wall.

Another thing he had decided I wasn't allowed to know.

"Mark."

He sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where he told me he was leaving.

"The night Lily was born, there was a man who came to the hospital."

I stood across from him.

"Daniel?"

He nodded.

"He was looking for me."

"Why?"

Mark looked at his hands.

"Because of something I did."

My heart sank.

"What did you do?"

He looked up.

And for the first time since I knew him, I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

"I made a mistake before I met you."

I waited.

"Not a small mistake."

The kitchen felt colder.

"What kind of mistake?"

Mark opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

A message.

From Daniel.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

Ask Mark why Lily's hospital records were changed.

I looked up slowly.

Mark's face had gone completely pale.

"You knew," I whispered.

He didn't deny it.

"You knew."

"Sarah..."

"No."

My voice shook.

"You knew something happened to Lily."

"I was trying to protect her."

"From what?"

He stood up.

"Sarah, you need to understand—"

"No."

I stepped back.

"Sixteen years."

My eyes filled.

"Sixteen years I trusted you with everything."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

My voice broke.

"You don't know what it feels like to find out your whole marriage has missing pages."

Mark looked devastated.

But I couldn't stop.

"Tell me the truth."

He closed his eyes.

Then finally said:

"The night Lily was born, Daniel saved her from someone who wanted to hurt her."

My blood ran cold.

"Who?"

Mark looked toward the stairs.

Toward where my daughter slept.

Then back at me.

"The person responsible was someone you know."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Who?"

Mark didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment...

The lights in the house went out.

The kitchen became completely dark.

Then my phone screen lit up.

One new message.

From an unknown number.

You finally asked the right question.

May you like

A second message appeared.

Now ask who was standing beside Lily's hospital bed that night.
