Chapter 4 - The Rhythm of the Past

Arthur didn't wait for security or an ambulance. He lifted the light, starved boy into his arms, ran down the private executive elevator, and shoved open the rear doors to his waiting armored limousine.

"Northwestern Memorial Hospital! Drive! Fast!" Arthur roared at his personal chauffeur.

Within fifteen minutes, Leo was rushed into the VIP emergency trauma wing under the direct care of the Chief of Medicine. Nurses wrapped him in thermal warming blankets, hooked up IV fluids with glucose and vital vitamins, and monitored his heart rate.

Arthur Vance stood in the corner of the spotless medical room, pacing like a caged animal, his hand resting on his mouth, his eyes fixed on the sleeping, fragile boy in the bed.

The Chief of Medicine, Dr. Richard Sterling—a longtime friend of the Vance family—stepped out of the room with a medical chart and approached Arthur.

"He was severely hypothermic and in advanced stages of starvation, Arthur," Dr. Sterling said quietly. "If he had stayed out in that cold for another few hours, his organs would have shut down completely. But the IV fluids are working. He's stable now. He's resting."

Arthur grabbed the doctor by his coat lapels, his knuckles turning white. "Richard... the bracelet on his wrist. Look at it!"

Dr. Sterling sighed gently, looking at Arthur with deep sympathy. "Arthur, I know how much you miss Maya, but—"

"I am not crazy, Richard!" Arthur yelled, his voice echoing down the sterile corridor. "Look at the inside clasp of that silver bracelet! Look at the serial number and the initials!"

Dr. Sterling stepped over to the sleeping boy’s bedside, pulled back the warm blanket slightly, and lifted the silver clasp to the light. He read the micro-engraving etched inside the metal: M.V. - Always with you.

Dr. Sterling froze. His jaw dropped. "This... this was Maya’s."

"Check his medical records!" Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with an explosive mixture of grief and sudden, desperate hope. "Check his chest! Check the surgery scar!"

Dr. Sterling quickly pulled up the boy’s hospital intake records on his tablet, cross-referencing Leo’s name and birth date with the regional organ donor registry system—a system Arthur Vance himself had funded heavily three years ago after his daughter's tragic passing.

The tablet screen flashed red, then green, displaying a historical medical file from three years prior.

Patient: Leo Thomas.

Age: 7.

Diagnosis: End-Stage Pediatric Cardiomyopathy.

Procedure: Emergency Orthotopic Heart Transplantation.

Donor Match ID: #MV-0824 (Maya Vance).

Dr. Sterling dropped his tablet onto the medical tray. He looked up at Arthur, his eyes filled with absolute wonder.

Arthur fell back against the wall, sliding down until his knees hit the floor. He covered his face with his trembling hands, letting out a deep, wrenching sob that tore straight from his chest.

The boy who had spent three days starving in the freezing winter wind, refusing to spend a single dollar of Arthur’s money to return the picture of his dead daughter... was carrying his daughter’s heart inside his chest.
