Chapter 6 - The Room My Mother Hid From Me

The recording started playing.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Because the voice coming from the hidden room was impossible.
It was my mother's voice.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably hers.
"June..."
My hand immediately covered my mouth.
I hadn't heard that voice in years.
Not in my memories.
Not in old videos.
Not anywhere.
Because after my mother died, my father had packed away everything connected to her.
Her clothes.
Her journals.
Her photographs.
He said it was too painful.
I believed him.
Now I realized something.
Maybe he didn't remove those things because he was grieving.
Maybe he removed them because he was afraid.
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, then you finally found the room."
I looked around the hidden space.
It was small.
Not a normal room.
More like a secret storage area built behind the wall.
There were old boxes stacked everywhere.
Documents.
Photographs.
A small recording device sitting on a wooden table.
Everything was untouched.
Like someone had been waiting for me to find it.
My father's face was pale.
"Turn it off."
I looked back at him.
"No."
My voice surprised even me.
It wasn't angry.
It wasn't emotional.
It was firm.
"Let her speak."
My father looked away.
And that was when I knew.
He had heard this recording before.
He wasn't discovering the truth with me.
He was remembering it.
The recording continued.
"June, there are things your father never told you."
I looked at Robert.
His eyes were closed.
My mother continued.
"He believes he was protecting you. Maybe a part of him was. But fear made him make choices that hurt the people he loved."
I felt my chest tighten.
Because even now...
even after everything...
my mother still refused to completely hate him.
That was who she was.
She always searched for the good in people.
Even when they didn't deserve it.
The recording continued.
"The house you live in was never just a house."
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slightly.
I already knew.
But hearing my mother say it made everything real.
"The land belonged to my family for generations. When I married Robert, I trusted him with everything."
A pause.
Then her voice became quieter.
"But someone else knew about the property before Robert did."
The room became still.
I leaned closer.
"Someone inside the family."
My heart dropped.
I looked toward Tessa.
She looked terrified.
The recording continued.
"June, if you found this room, then you probably already know about the documents."
I touched the folder beside me.
"Your father and your sister were not the only ones involved."
Everyone froze.
Not the only ones.
My fingers tightened.
"What does that mean?"
The recording didn't answer.
Because it was just a recording.
My mother continued.
"There was another person who helped create the agreement."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Listen carefully."
I did.
"Someone who had access to legal records. Someone who knew exactly how to hide ownership information."
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because I suddenly understood.
My father couldn't have done everything alone.
Someone had helped him.
Someone who knew the system.
Someone who knew the paperwork.
The recording continued.
"That person told Robert that June would never question the documents because she trusted her family."
My stomach turned.
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I trusted them.
Completely.
My mother paused.
Then she said:
"That person was..."
The recording suddenly stopped.
The room went silent.
I stared at the device.
"What happened?"
Daniel walked toward it.
"The battery."
He checked the back.
"Someone removed it."
Everyone looked at each other.
My eyes moved slowly toward my father.
But he shook his head immediately.
"No."
For the first time, I believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because he looked genuinely confused.
Daniel examined the device.
"This was interrupted recently."
I frowned.
"Recently?"
He nodded.
"Someone has been here."
My skin went cold.
"Someone entered this room?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't have to.
The answer was obvious.
The hidden room wasn't hidden anymore.
Someone knew.
I looked around.
The boxes.
The papers.
The old photographs.
Everything my mother left behind.
Someone had been searching through it.
I walked toward the shelves.
"Maybe they were looking for something."
Daniel followed me.
"Probably."
"What?"
He looked at the documents.
"The final deed."
I turned.
"What final deed?"
He took a deep breath.
"The document that proves who legally owns the property."
My father looked at him.
"You said it was gone."
Daniel looked back.
"I said I thought it was gone."
That sentence changed everything.
I searched through the boxes.
Old bank statements.
Letters.
Photos.
Then I found something.
A small wooden box.
My name was written on top.
Not my married name.
My childhood name.
The name my mother used when I was little.
I picked it up.
My hands were shaking.
"Mom left this for me."
My father stepped forward.
"June..."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He stopped.
Because he knew.
He no longer had the right to tell me what to do.
I opened the box.
Inside was a necklace.
A photograph.
And another envelope.
This time, the envelope wasn't addressed to me.
It had one name.
Robert.
My father's face changed.
He knew immediately.
"What is that?"
I looked at him.
"My mother's last letter to you."
He didn't move.
The confidence disappeared from his face.
Daniel looked away.
Even he seemed surprised.
I opened it.
The first line made my heart stop.
Robert,
If June finds this, then you failed to keep your promise.
I looked at my father.
His eyes were filled with regret.
I continued reading.
You promised me you would protect her. Not control her. Not use her trust against her.
My throat tightened.
My mother knew.
She knew everything.
The letter continued.
You and Tessa made a mistake, but the person who started this was not either of you.
I stopped.
Not either of you.
Then who?
I read the next sentence.
The person who convinced you to change the documents is still close to June.
Still close.
My eyes moved slowly.
I looked around the room.
Daniel.
My father.
Tessa.
Everyone.
Then the final paragraph appeared.
I know you will try to hide this from her because you think you are protecting her.
But June deserves to know who has been standing beside her all these years.
My hands trembled.
There was a name written underneath.
The same person my mother had been trying to expose.
I looked at it.
And my blood went cold.
Because the person who had been helping my father...
was not Tessa.
It was someone I had invited into my home.
Someone who had held Lucy's hand.
Someone who had told me they loved my family.
I slowly looked toward the kitchen.
May you like
Because at that exact moment...
the front door opened.
