Chapter 3 - The Call That Changed Everything

My hand tightened around the phone.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The voice on the other end was familiar.

Not because I had heard it often.

Because I had spent months trying to understand why it bothered me.

“Who is this?” I asked.

The woman stayed silent.

I could hear breathing.

Nervous breathing.

The kind of breathing people had when they were afraid of saying the wrong thing.

“Evelyn,” she whispered again. “You need to listen carefully.”

I stood in my empty kitchen, staring at the spot where Carter had kissed my forehead that morning before leaving for the airport.

The same place where I had smiled at him.

The same place where I had let him walk away believing I was still the woman who trusted him.

“Vanessa?” I asked.

A pause.

Then a quiet answer.

“Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

I almost ended the call.

Almost.

Because the last person I expected to call me was the woman my husband was taking to Dubai.

The woman whose name had destroyed my marriage in a single night.

“What do you want?” I asked.

My voice sounded colder than I expected.

Vanessa exhaled.

“I know you hate me.”

I looked toward the dining table.

The printed emails were still there.

The evidence.

The proof.

“You slept with my husband.”

“I know.”

“You planned a trip with him.”

“I know.”

“You knew he was married.”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised me.

I expected excuses.

I expected blame.

I expected her to say Carter lied.

But she didn’t.

Instead, she said something I never expected.

“He lied to me too.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He told me he was leaving you.”

The words hung in the air.

I said nothing.

Because some part of me already knew.

Men like Carter rarely destroyed one life without creating another lie somewhere else.

“He told me your marriage was over,” Vanessa continued. “He said you were basically separated. He said you were only staying together because of appearances.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“That’s not true.”

“I know that now.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“How long have you known?”

“I found out yesterday.”

Yesterday.

The timing confused me.

“Then why call me now?”

Because she was afraid.

I could hear it.

“He left his phone in the hotel car.”

I froze.

“What?”

“When we arrived at the airport.”

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“You’re already in Dubai?”

“Yes.”

My eyes closed.

Of course.

They had already arrived.

The fantasy was happening.

The hotel.

The suite.

The rose petals.

Everything.

“He left his phone?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“And?”

“I saw something.”

Her voice became quieter.

“Something that made me realize I was not the only person he was lying to.”

I walked slowly toward the counter.

“What did you see?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I found messages.”

“With who?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer bothered me.

“What do you mean you don’t know?”

“Because the name was hidden.”

I felt my heartbeat increase.

Carter had been careless.

But not careless enough to reveal everything.

“What did the messages say?”

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“They weren’t about the affair.”

I stared at the wall.

“What were they about?”

“Money.”

A strange silence followed.

Not the silence of heartbreak.

The silence before something bigger.

“How much money?”

“More than the Dubai trip.”

I walked to the table and sat down.

“Vanessa, start from the beginning.”

For the next twenty minutes, I listened.

And with every sentence, the picture of Carter changed.

Because apparently, the man who cheated on me was not only hiding a mistress.

He was hiding something else.

Something involving his company.

Whitmore Imports had always been Carter’s pride.

He loved telling people the story.

How he built it from nothing.

How he turned a small importing business into a multimillion-dollar company.

How he was a self-made success.

But according to Vanessa, there were problems.

Serious problems.

“I work in accounting,” she said. “I started noticing transfers that didn’t make sense.”

“Transfers where?”

“Company accounts.”

My throat tightened.

“How much?”

“Hundreds of thousands.”

I looked at the printed documents beside me.

The Dubai trip suddenly felt smaller.

Still painful.

Still unforgivable.

But smaller.

“What kind of transfers?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“You’re the accounting manager.”

“I was his accounting manager.”

The way she said it caught my attention.

“Was?”

Another pause.

“He fired me this morning.”

My eyebrows lifted.

“Why?”

“Because I asked questions.”

There it was.

The first piece of truth.

Carter didn’t remove problems.

He removed people who noticed them.

“What questions did you ask?”

“I asked why money was being moved through several shell companies.”

My body went still.

Shell companies.

That phrase changed everything.

I had spent years analyzing financial risk.

I knew exactly what that meant.

“Did you save anything?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

“You did?”

“I knew something was wrong.”

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“So I copied some files.”

I leaned forward.

“What files?”

“Financial records.”

“Where are they?”

“I have them.”

A thousand thoughts moved through my head.

My husband’s affair.

His lies.

His company.

Missing money.

Vanessa.

A woman I had considered my enemy was now holding information that could affect everything.

But trust was not something I gave easily anymore.

“Why should I believe you?”

She went quiet.

Then she said:

“You shouldn’t.”

That surprised me.

“You’re right not to trust me, Evelyn.”

Her voice softened.

“I hurt you. I knew he was married. I made choices I regret.”

I listened.

“But Carter is not who either of us thought he was.”

I looked outside.

The rain had stopped.

The sky over Connecticut was gray.

Cold.

Empty.

“Where is Carter now?”

“At the hotel.”

“Where are you?”

“Outside.”

“Why?”

“Because I found something else.”

My fingers froze.

“What?”

Vanessa took a breath.

“I found a second reservation.”

My heart started beating faster.

“The Dubai trip?”

“No.”

Her voice dropped.

“A different one.”

I stood up.

“What different one?”

“A private villa.”

“When?”

“Two weeks from now.”

I felt a chill.

“With who?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

Because I already knew.

Someone else.

Someone Carter had been hiding.

“Evelyn…”

“Yes?”

“There’s something written on the reservation.”

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“Not for Vanessa.”

My breathing stopped.

“What does it say?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Not for the wife.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I looked at Carter’s wedding photo hanging near the staircase.

The man smiling beside me.

The man I thought I knew.

“Who was it for?” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Then my phone received a notification.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

One photo.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

Because the picture showed Carter at the Dubai hotel lobby.

May you like

Standing beside Vanessa.

And behind them was the person who had booked the private villa.
