Chapter 5 - My Mother's Secret

Evelyn watched the car disappear from the camera frame.

Charles whispered, "Margaret?"

His voice sounded smaller than Evelyn had ever heard it.

She turned toward Jonathan.

"What aren't you telling me?"

"Nothing."

"Wrong answer."

"I swear."

Charles grabbed his coat.

"I'm going after her."

Evelyn blocked him.

"No."

"That's my wife."

"And she's my mother."

"Then you understand."

"I understand exactly why you cannot go running into something you don't understand."

Charles stopped.

His own arrogance had been returned to him.

Not cruelly.

Accurately.

Evelyn called for the vehicle plate to be tracked.

No match.

Cloned.

Professional.

Daniel had planned this.

But Margaret had walked willingly.

That changed everything.

Evelyn remembered childhood evenings when her mother disappeared into the study after Charles slept.

Phone calls that ended when Evelyn entered.

The way Margaret never asked detailed questions about Evelyn's work.

She had assumed her mother was respecting boundaries.

Maybe Margaret had known those boundaries better than anyone.

Jonathan sat down.

"I met your mother before I met Charles."

Evelyn turned.

"What?"

"We worked on a federal technology advisory board."

Charles stared at him.

"You told me you met her at Georgetown."

"I did. But not socially."

Jonathan looked at Evelyn.

"Your mother was a systems analyst."

Evelyn almost laughed.

Margaret Mercer had spent most of Evelyn's childhood running charities and foundations.

At least that was what everyone believed.

"Sentinel?"

Jonathan nodded.

"She helped design the original architecture."

Charles stepped backward.

"My wife?"

"Yes."

"You knew?"

"She made me promise."

Charles looked devastated.

For decades, he had believed wealth gave him access to every room that mattered.

Now he was learning the two people closest to him had lived entire lives beyond his sight.

Evelyn's phone vibrated.

A message from Margaret.

COME TO MERCER TOWER. ALONE.

Charles saw it.

"You're not going alone."

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

"Prepare two teams."

Charles almost smiled.

"Good."

"You're staying here."

The smile vanished.

"Evelyn."

"Dad."

He heard the command in her voice.

Then she softened.

"I need to know you're safe."

Charles stared at her.

Years ago, he had tried to control her because he was afraid.

Now she was protecting him for the same reason.

He finally nodded.

Mercer Tower was mostly empty when Evelyn arrived before dawn.

She entered through the executive garage.

Marcus's teams remained outside.

Technically, Evelyn was violating the message.

But she had learned long ago that "come alone" meant "don't let me see your backup."

The elevator carried her to the secure data level.

Margaret waited outside the vault.

Daniel stood beside her.

Evelyn stopped.

Seeing him in person hurt more than she expected.

Daniel Cross had trained her.

Protected her.

Then died.

Or pretended to.

"You let me bury you."

Daniel's face tightened.

"I know."

"I stood beside your empty coffin."

"I know."

"I called your sister."

"I know."

Evelyn's voice dropped.

"Then don't tell me you're sorry."

"I wasn't going to."

Margaret stepped forward.

"Evelyn."

"Mom, stay there."

Margaret obeyed.

"Are you here willingly?"

"Yes."

"Is Daniel threatening you?"

"No."

"Then explain."

Margaret took a breath.

"Sentinel was my greatest mistake."

She had helped build it twenty years earlier.

When she discovered its potential for abuse, she joined a secret effort to dismantle it.

But the architecture had already spread.

Daniel later became part of the containment team.

"So why fake your death?" Evelyn asked him.

"Because someone inside our own operation was rebuilding Sentinel."

"Who?"

"We never proved it."

Evelyn looked toward the vault.

"And the master key?"

Margaret removed a necklace.

A small metal capsule hung from it.

"I've carried half of it for eighteen years."

Evelyn stared.

"The other half?"

Daniel looked toward the vault.

"Inside."

Charles's acquisition had unknowingly placed both halves within reach.

Evelyn stepped toward the door.

"We destroy it."

Daniel blocked her.

"Not yet."

Her eyes narrowed.

"Move."

"If we destroy it now, we'll never identify the network."

"I don't care about identifying them if destroying this stops them."

"It won't."

Daniel explained that Sentinel had already begun rebuilding itself.

The master key could deactivate it.

But only after they located every active node.

"How?"

"Let it connect."

Evelyn stared.

"You want to activate the system."

"For ninety seconds."

"Absolutely not."

Margaret spoke.

"It's the only way."

Evelyn turned toward her mother.

"You knew about this plan?"

"Yes."

"And the gala?"

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"That wasn't us."

"Then who?"

"Whoever attacked you realized Mercer Capital had completed the architecture before we did."

A sound came from the elevator lobby.

Ding.

All three turned.

Daniel reached inside his coat.

Evelyn touched her earpiece.

"Marcus?"

No response.

The elevator doors opened.

Charles Mercer stepped out.

Evelyn's anger flared.

"I told you to stay at the hotel."

"I spent twelve years refusing to listen to you. I'm trying something new."

Then another elevator opened behind him.

Charles turned.

A man stepped out.

Jonathan Vale.

But this time he was holding a gun.

He pointed it directly at Margaret.

"I'm sorry, Charles."

Charles stared at his oldest friend.

May you like

Jonathan's expression became cold.

"But I've been waiting eighteen years for her to open that vault."
