Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Documents

Victoria Hale had once been one of the most powerful people in Nathan’s company.

She joined during its earliest expansion, when Nathan still worked from a cramped office above a bakery. She was brilliant, persuasive, and fearless in negotiations.

Investors admired her.

Employees feared her.

Nathan initially believed that fear was the price of rapid growth.

His mother disagreed.

“People show you who they are when they think no one important is watching,” Elaine once told him.

Nathan remembered those words when a junior accountant discovered that Victoria had redirected small portions of driver service fees into an unapproved corporate fund.

Victoria called it an emergency reserve.

The records showed that she used part of it to pay private consultants and influence regional contracts.

Nathan fired her.

She left without apologizing.

Before walking out, she told him, “You built a company for people who will never thank you. One day, someone smarter will take it from you.”

Nathan had not seen her since.

Now her name appeared in property transfers linked to Arturo.

Claire enlarged the financial chart on the conference room screen.

“The holding company is called Meridian Strategic Assets,” she said. “Victoria controls it through two subsidiaries.”

“How much money did Arturo transfer?”

“At least $4.8 million from the refinanced properties. There may be more.”

“What did Meridian purchase?”

“Shares.”

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

“In my company?”

“Not directly. Shares from early investors in several affiliated companies. Logistics, payment processing, insurance.”

Nathan studied the chart.

“They are surrounding us.”

“That is one interpretation.”

“What is the other?”

Claire hesitated.

“They may be preparing to claim that the core company cannot function independently.”

Nathan understood.

If Victoria controlled enough affiliated services, she could create a crisis, then present herself as the person capable of solving it.

Arturo’s access to driver benefits and internal complaints would allow him to increase dissatisfaction from inside.

“Why target drivers?” Nathan asked.

Claire crossed her arms.

“High complaint rates weaken trust. Suspensions create public anger. Missing tips create lawsuits. If the company appears unstable, its value falls.”

“And Victoria buys influence cheaply.”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked at Arturo’s approvals.

“People lost their income so she could manipulate our value.”

Claire nodded.

Nathan’s anger became colder.

“Find Victoria.”

By morning, the story from the mansion had begun spreading online.

One of Mauricio’s guests had secretly recorded part of the confrontation.

The video did not show Nathan’s full explanation, but it captured Mauricio knocking the food down and ordering him to eat from the floor.

Within hours, thousands of people had shared it.

The headline most often repeated was simple:

WEALTHY MAN HUMILIATES DELIVERY DRIVER—THEN LEARNS DRIVER OWNS HIS MANSION.

Nathan’s communications team wanted to release a statement immediately.

He refused.

“Not until we contact the affected drivers,” he said.

“The public is demanding answers,” the communications director warned.

“The drivers deserved answers before the public knew their names.”

The company created a confidential support line.

By noon, more than two hundred drivers had reported unusual penalties connected to Arturo’s department.

Some complaints were minor.

Others were devastating.

One driver said his medical insurance assistance had been canceled after he questioned a missing payment.

A single mother said she had been removed from the platform after refusing to enter a customer’s bedroom.

An elderly courier described being forced to carry twelve cases of water up several flights while a customer filmed him struggling.

Nathan read every summary.

The company he had created to protect workers had become a weapon against them.

He felt personally responsible.

At the mansion, Mauricio watched the video on his phone.

The comments were merciless.

People called him cruel, spoiled, and pathetic.

Several friends had unfollowed him.

A luxury brand canceled a promotional arrangement.

The private club where he hosted business dinners suspended his membership.

Mauricio threw the phone across his bedroom.

It struck the wall and fell onto the carpet.

Arturo stood in the doorway.

“You need to stop reacting emotionally.”

“My life is being destroyed.”

“Your reputation can be repaired.”

“How?”

“By changing the story.”

Mauricio laughed.

“The video shows exactly what happened.”

“It shows part of what happened.”

Arturo entered and closed the door.

“We will say Nathan staged the delivery to intimidate us.”

“He did come personally.”

“We will claim he planned the confrontation.”

“I knocked the bag down.”

“You were provoked.”

“I ordered him to eat from the floor.”

“You made a joke that was edited to appear serious.”

Mauricio stared at him.

“No one will believe that.”

“People believe whatever appears often enough.”

Arturo placed the portable hard drive on the desk.

“Victoria has arranged an interview.”

Mauricio’s face changed.

“You are still working with her?”

“She can help us.”

“She used you.”

“She gave us a path to ownership.”

“Do we own anything?”

Arturo did not answer.

Mauricio stood.

“You told me the company would be ours.”

“It still can be.”

“How?”

Arturo connected the drive to a laptop.

A collection of files appeared.

Contracts. Messages. Financial spreadsheets. Copies of Nathan’s electronic signature.

“Victoria has documents showing that Nathan knew funds were being moved.”

“But he didn’t.”

“The documents say he did.”

Mauricio understood.

“You created fake records.”

“We created necessary protection.”

“That is fraud.”

Arturo’s expression sharpened.

“Do not suddenly pretend you care about morality.”

Mauricio flinched.

Arturo continued.

“You enjoyed this house. You spent money from those accounts. You used company vehicles, staff, and memberships. You told everyone the business was yours.”

“I did not know the money was stolen.”

“You never asked.”

Mauricio looked at the screen.

His name appeared on several transfers.

Payments for travel.

A sports car.

Jewelry.

Party expenses.

Arturo had connected him to everything.

“You put my name on these.”

“You benefited from them.”

“You trapped me.”

“I protected you.”

“No,” Mauricio whispered. “You protected yourself.”

Arturo closed the laptop.

“Victoria’s interview is at four. You will attend.”

Mauricio looked at his father with something close to hatred.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Arturo leaned toward him.

“Then when investigators arrive, they will see your name on every payment.”

At 3:45 p.m., Nathan received a message from an unknown number.

The message contained an address and six words.

Victoria will meet Arturo at four.

Claire wanted to send private security.

Nathan contacted law enforcement instead.

The address belonged to an upscale hotel.

Investigators positioned themselves nearby, but they could not enter without a warrant or clear evidence of a crime in progress.

Nathan stayed at the operations center and watched updates arrive.

At four, Arturo and Mauricio entered a private hotel suite.

Victoria was waiting with a public relations consultant and a television producer.

She wore a cream-colored suit and smiled when Mauricio arrived.

“You look terrible,” she said.

Mauricio ignored her.

Arturo placed the hard drive on the table.

“Everything is here.”

Victoria examined it.

“You brought the originals?”

“Copies.”

Her smile faded.

“We agreed on the complete archive.”

“We agreed that you would transfer controlling shares in Meridian after the board vote.”

“The board vote has not happened.”

“Then you do not get the originals.”

Mauricio watched them.

He finally understood that neither trusted the other.

The television producer prepared the camera.

Victoria handed Mauricio a written statement.

He read the first paragraph.

It claimed Nathan had abused his authority, threatened the Alvarez family, and attempted to conceal unauthorized financial practices.

“This says I witnessed Nathan approve the transfers,” Mauricio said.

“You did,” Victoria replied.

“No, I didn’t.”

“You were present at family meetings.”

“I was at parties.”

Victoria leaned closer.

“Mauricio, the public already believes you are a monster. This is your opportunity to become a whistleblower instead.”

He stared at her.

“You want me to lie.”

“I want you to survive.”

Arturo placed a hand on his son’s shoulder.

“Read the statement.”

Mauricio looked at his father’s hand.

Then he looked at the camera.

The red recording light came on.

The producer counted down.

Three.

Two.

One.

Mauricio opened his mouth.

But before he spoke, his phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Your father attached your name to $1.2 million in stolen funds. Ask him about account 4479.

Mauricio’s eyes moved toward Arturo.

“What is account 4479?”

Arturo went still.

Victoria’s expression changed.

“Turn off the camera,” Arturo said.

The producer hesitated.

“Turn it off!”

The red light disappeared.

Mauricio stepped away.

“What is account 4479?”

Arturo looked toward Victoria.

She said nothing.

Mauricio opened his banking application and searched.

An account he did not recognize appeared under his name.

Balance: $1,217,400.

His hands began to shake.

“You put the money in my name.”

Arturo lowered his voice.

“It was temporary.”

“You made me responsible.”

“I was going to move it.”

“When?”

“After the restructuring.”

Mauricio turned toward Victoria.

“Did you know?”

She looked at him with no sympathy.

“Your father needed a clean account holder.”

Mauricio felt the room spin.

The people he trusted had planned to use him as the visible owner of stolen money.

If the scheme failed, he would take the blame.

He looked at the prepared statement.

Then at the camera.

For the first time in his life, Mauricio faced a choice that money could not solve.

He could continue lying and protect the illusion of power.

Or he could admit the truth and risk losing everything.

Arturo saw the hesitation.

“Think carefully,” he warned.

Mauricio picked up the written statement.

Then he slowly tore it in half.

Victoria’s eyes hardened.

“What are you doing?”

Mauricio looked at his father.

“The first honest thing I’ve ever done.”

He reached for the hotel door.

Arturo grabbed his arm.

“You leave this room, and you destroy this family.”

Mauricio pulled free.

“No. You already did.”

He opened the door.

Two investigators were standing in the hallway.

Behind them was Claire Bennett.

Mauricio looked back at Arturo and Victoria.

May you like

Then he raised both hands.

“I want a lawyer,” he said. “And I want to tell you everything.”
