Chapter 4 - A Bride With Her Own Contract

Harrison survived.

The bullet had passed through his side without striking an organ.

Lorenzo moved him to a private clinic under Costa protection.

Sienna refused to leave until the doctors stabilized him.

Then she confronted Lorenzo.

“What did Mateo do?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you to verify everything yourself. That seems to be your preferred method.”

“Good.”

Mateo entered.

“I’m going with her.”

Lorenzo turned.

“No.”

“To the locker.”

“No.”

Sienna interrupted.

“I am going.”

Both brothers looked at her.

“You two can decide which one wants to waste energy trying to stop me.”

Mateo smiled faintly.

Lorenzo did not.

An hour later, Sienna and Mateo entered South Station with Costa security scattered through the crowd.

Locker 218 sat near the far wall.

Sienna inserted Harrison’s key.

“Ready?”

“No,” Mateo said.

She opened it anyway.

Inside was a leather briefcase.

No bomb.

No weapon.

Just paper.

And a second flash drive.

The documents were trust agreements.

Sienna read the first page.

Then again.

“Mateo.”

He looked.

His face changed.

The trust had been created by Camille six weeks before her supposed death.

Beneficiary:

Mateo Costa.

Asset:

Twenty percent beneficial interest in North Atlantic Logistics.

Sienna looked at him.

“You own another company?”

“I’ve never heard of it.”

She turned pages.

North Atlantic Logistics controlled shell entities that held minority interests throughout the port.

Enough, combined with Mateo’s Costa shares, to swing control of the consortium.

“This is why somebody wanted you framed,” Sienna said.

Mateo stared at Camille’s signature.

“She left me leverage.”

“Or evidence.”

They opened the flash drive later in Lorenzo’s secure office.

Camille appeared on video.

Alive.

Recording herself.

“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.”

Mateo sat motionless.

Camille continued.

“North Atlantic Logistics is not what it appears to be. Charles Vale created the structure, but he does not control it. Harrison Mercer discovered the transfers. He borrowed from the Costas because someone threatened Sienna if he went to the police.”

Sienna’s eyes filled.

Her father had still betrayed her.

But the betrayal had changed shape.

Camille looked directly into the camera.

“Mateo, if I disappear, do not trust the story they tell about me.”

He lowered his head.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Lorenzo knows part of this.”

Sienna looked at Lorenzo.

He did not move.

Camille continued.

“He helped me investigate.”

Mateo stood.

“You knew?”

“I knew she suspected Vale.”

“You let me believe she was dead.”

“I saw her body recovered.”

“No. You saw a body.”

Lorenzo’s silence confirmed it.

Mateo crossed the room.

“You knew there were questions.”

“I knew questions would get you killed.”

“You watched me destroy myself!”

Lorenzo grabbed his brother before the argument became a fight.

“I watched you survive.”

Mateo shoved him away.

“Barely.”

Sienna stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both men stopped.

She pointed toward Camille’s frozen image.

“She made this because she expected something to happen. Finish watching.”

Lorenzo pressed play.

Camille’s final words were simple.

“If Harrison’s daughter becomes involved, tell her the truth before Vale does. Because Sienna is the only person who can legally stop him.”

The video ended.

Sienna frowned.

“Why me?”

Nobody knew.

The following morning, she received the amended marriage agreement.

Every condition she had demanded was there.

Including Mateo’s shares.

She read it twice.

Then added one clause.

Lorenzo saw it.

“What is this?”

“If evidence proves the marriage is being used to facilitate criminal activity, I can dissolve it immediately without financial penalty.”

Mateo looked over her shoulder.

“Fair.”

Lorenzo signed.

Mateo signed.

Sienna signed last.

Not because she had surrendered.

Because she finally understood the marriage gave her something her father never had.

Legal standing inside both structures.

Mercer and Costa.

Two days later, the engagement was announced.

Boston society exploded.

News vans gathered outside Mercer headquarters.

Mateo’s past filled television screens.

Sienna ignored all of it.

That evening, she returned to her apartment under guard.

A package waited outside her bedroom.

Security insisted nobody had entered.

Inside was a red dress.

Identical to the one Camille had worn the night she disappeared.

A note rested beneath it.

MATEO COULDN’T SAVE HER.

HE WON’T SAVE YOU.

Sienna turned the card over.

There was an address on the back.

And a time.

MIDNIGHT.

She looked at her clock.

11:42.

Then someone knocked three times on her balcony door.

She lived on the twenty-fourth floor.
