Chapter 5 - The Second Wooden Box

Adrian knocked once.

“Daniela. Open the door.”

Nobody inside moved.

Through the peephole, Daniela could see the wooden box tucked beneath his arm.

It looked almost exactly like the one her father had left her.

Same dark walnut.

Same brass corners.

Same shallow scratch across the lid.

But Daniela knew it wasn't hers.

Her father had carved two tiny initials underneath the handle.

D.R.

This box had no initials.

“Where did you get it?” she asked through the door.

Adrian lowered his eyes toward the box.

“From Mom.”

“Why does she have a copy of my father's box?”

“It isn't a copy.”

Daniela's hand tightened around the phone.

“Then what is it?”

“Open the door.”

“No.”

“Daniela, please.”

She almost laughed.

Please.

Four years of marriage, and somehow the word sounded unfamiliar coming from him.

Martin stepped beside her.

“Ask him to leave the box outside.”

Daniela did.

Adrian immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“Then leave.”

“I can't.”

“You found the door easily enough.”

His expression changed.

He understood the reference.

“I deserved that.”

Daniela stared through the peephole.

“You deserve considerably more than that.”

Adrian looked toward the elevator.

Then back at the door.

“Mom doesn't know I came.”

Vanessa muttered, “I don't believe that for a second.”

Adrian heard her.

“Vanessa, stay out of this.”

She walked closer.

“You made that impossible three years ago.”

Evan stood near the table, visibly uncomfortable.

Adrian heard another voice inside.

“Evan?”

Nobody answered.

“Evan Brooks, are you in there?”

Evan closed his eyes.

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“So that's what this is now? Everyone who betrayed me gets a meeting with my wife?”

Daniela unlocked the security chain but kept the deadbolt engaged.

“You don't get to use the word betrayed.”

Silence.

Then Adrian said quietly, “You're right.”

That stopped her.

Adrian had spent the entire afternoon defending himself.

Minimizing.

Deflecting.

Blaming.

Now he was agreeing?

Martin noticed too.

“Why are you here, Adrian?”

“I need to give Daniela something.”

“The box?”

“Yes.”

“Leave it.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

Adrian looked directly at the peephole.

“Because the box isn't the important part.”

He placed it on the floor.

Then opened the lid.

Daniela couldn't see inside from her angle.

Adrian reached in and removed a sealed envelope.

Her name was written across the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Daniela's breath caught.

She recognized the handwriting.

Celeste.

“What's inside?” Daniela asked.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa scoffed.

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I haven't opened it.”

“Why not?”

“Because it's addressed to Daniela.”

Vanessa stared toward the door.

“Since when do you care who something belongs to?”

Adrian flinched.

Daniela felt no satisfaction.

She was too tired.

“Slide it under the door.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“The envelope is sealed inside a plastic evidence sleeve.”

Martin frowned.

“Evidence?”

Adrian looked down.

“Mom kept it that way.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Daniela turned toward Martin.

He was thinking.

Finally he said, “We can let him in.”

Vanessa immediately objected.

“No.”

“He's not entering alone.”

“That's not the problem.”

“What is?”

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“If Celeste knows he took that box, she'll come.”

Daniela heard every word.

“So let her.”

Vanessa stared at her.

Daniela turned the deadbolt.

Martin positioned himself beside the door.

Evan moved farther back.

Daniela opened it.

Adrian stood there.

For the first time since she had known him, he looked smaller than the room around him.

His dark suit was wrinkled.

His collar was open.

His hair had fallen forward.

There was no confidence left.

No smug smile.

No husband certain his wife would return.

Just a man holding a box filled with something he clearly feared.

Daniela stepped aside.

“Five minutes.”

Adrian entered.

His eyes found Evan first.

Then Vanessa.

“Unbelievable.”

Evan looked at him.

“Tell her.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“You suddenly developed a conscience?”

“Too late, apparently.”

“Three years too late.”

“That makes two of us.”

Adrian's face hardened.

Martin stepped between them.

“This is not about either of you.”

Daniela closed the door.

“Put the box down.”

Adrian placed it on the table.

Beside the financial records.

Beside the flash drive.

Beside the documents that had already dismantled most of what Daniela believed about her marriage.

He opened the lid.

Inside was the envelope.

A small key.

Several photographs.

And a folded piece of paper.

Daniela reached for the photographs first.

Adrian stopped her.

“Read the note.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I did.”

“You said you hadn't opened anything.”

“The note wasn't sealed.”

Daniela unfolded it.

Celeste's handwriting.

Adrian—

If Daniela ever begins asking questions about Ridgepoint, give her the envelope only if you have no other choice.

Do not open it yourself.

If she sees what is inside, there is no way to control what happens next.

Daniela read it twice.

Then handed it to Martin.

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

Evan stared at Adrian.

“You knew about this?”

“Not until tonight.”

Daniela picked up the envelope.

The evidence sleeve had been sealed with tape.

Martin inspected it.

“Don't open it yet.”

Daniela looked at him.

“Why?”

“Photograph everything first.”

He used his phone to document the sleeve, seal and handwriting.

Daniela waited.

Her patience was disappearing.

Finally Martin nodded.

She tore open the sleeve.

Then the envelope.

Inside were three pages.

The first was a letter.

Daniela began reading.

Daniela,

If you're reading this, then Adrian has failed to keep his business and his marriage separate.

She stopped.

Adrian moved closer.

“What does it say?”

Daniela looked at him.

“You really didn't read it?”

“No.”

She continued.

I warned him that involving your finances would create consequences neither of you could control. He believed he could replace the money before you discovered it.

Daniela looked up.

“Replace what money?”

Adrian went pale.

She did.

The first transfers were supposed to be temporary. Ridgepoint was created to protect several properties until Vale Development recovered from its losses.

Martin interrupted.

“What losses?”

Adrian stared at the floor.

Daniela's voice sharpened.

“What losses?”

Adrian answered.

“The Harbor project.”

Daniela remembered it.

A waterfront development Adrian had celebrated as his biggest success.

“You told me Harbor made money.”

“It was supposed to.”

“How much did you lose?”

He didn't answer.

“Adrian.”

“About nine hundred thousand.”

Daniela felt the number hit her physically.

Vanessa whispered, “Jesus.”

Evan looked away.

Daniela stared at Adrian.

“You lost almost a million dollars?”

“Yes.”

“And instead of telling me, you borrowed against documents using my financial profile?”

“I thought I could fix it.”

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“The sentence people use after deciding someone else should carry the consequences.”

Adrian's eyes filled with shame.

Daniela returned to Celeste's letter.

Adrian believed he could restore everything before Daniela noticed. When that became impossible, I advised him to protect the remaining family assets.

Daniela stopped.

“Family assets.”

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“That sounds like Celeste.”

Daniela continued.

But Adrian made another mistake.

He allowed personal feelings to interfere with the plan.

Daniela frowned.

“What personal feelings?”

Adrian looked away.

The next sentence was worse.

He was supposed to end the marriage once the restructuring was complete.

Silence.

Daniela lowered the letter.

“So it was true.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You were planning to leave me.”

“Yes.”

The word barely carried across the room.

Daniela had expected pain.

Instead, she felt clarity.

“When?”

“Fourteen months ago.”

“Why didn't you?”

Adrian's eyes met hers.

“Because I couldn't.”

“That means nothing.”

“I tried.”

“That's worse.”

“I know.”

“You prepared documents.”

“Yes.”

“You valued my company.”

“Yes.”

“You hid assets.”

“Yes.”

“You let someone forge my signature.”

Adrian hesitated.

Daniela stepped closer.

“Did you forge it?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I don't know.”

“Stop lying.”

“I'm not.”

“Your company benefited.”

“My mother handled the bank paperwork.”

Everyone turned.

Adrian immediately seemed to regret saying it.

Daniela's voice dropped.

“Celeste submitted the guarantee?”

“I didn't say that.”

“You just did.”

“No. I said she handled paperwork.”

Martin spoke.

“Adrian, I strongly suggest you stop talking unless you intend to tell the complete truth.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Are you threatening me?”

“No. I'm protecting Daniela.”

The distinction landed hard.

Daniela returned to the letter.

There were only a few lines left.

She read silently.

Then stopped.

Adrian noticed.

“What?”

Daniela read the sentence again.

The reason Adrian did not leave when planned had nothing to do with the business.

Her pulse quickened.

Below it:

Ask him about March 17.

Daniela looked up.

“March seventeenth.”

Adrian's face changed instantly.

Vanessa noticed.

“What happened March seventeenth?”

Adrian shook his head.

“Nothing.”

Daniela stared at him.

“Your mother wrote that date.”

“She's manipulating you.”

“Why?”

“Because that's what she does.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Adrian stepped backward.

Daniela suddenly remembered March 17.

Not the entire day.

One moment.

She had been at work when Adrian called.

His voice had sounded strange.

He asked where she was.

She told him.

He asked when she would be home.

Then he showed up at her office twenty minutes later with flowers.

No occasion.

No explanation.

He had taken her to dinner.

For weeks afterward, he had been unusually attentive.

Daniela had thought their marriage was improving.

“What happened that day?” she asked again.

Adrian's eyes were wet now.

“I found something.”

“What?”

He looked toward the envelope.

“There should be another page.”

Daniela checked.

There was.

It had stuck behind the letter.

A photocopy.

At first she didn't understand what she was seeing.

Then she recognized the header.

A medical laboratory.

Her name appeared near the top.

Daniela's stomach tightened.

“What is this?”

Adrian said nothing.

She scanned the page.

Date.

March 17.

Patient: Daniela Reyes.

Then she saw the test description.

Her hands began trembling.

“This isn't mine.”

Adrian whispered, “I know.”

Daniela looked at him.

“What do you mean you know?”

“I found it in Mom's office.”

“Why would your mother have a medical report with my name?”

“I asked her.”

“And?”

“She said it was nothing.”

Daniela stared at the page.

The document looked official.

But she had never taken that test.

Never visited the laboratory.

Never authorized anyone to access her medical information.

Martin held out his hand.

“Let me see.”

Daniela gave it to him.

He examined the bottom.

“There’s an account reference.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Whose?”

Martin typed the number into his laptop.

Evan stood behind him.

Adrian remained frozen beside the table.

A result appeared.

Martin's eyebrows drew together.

“What?”

He turned the screen.

The account had not been opened under Daniela.

It had been opened under Vale Development Group.

Daniela stared.

“Why would Adrian's company pay for a medical test using my name?”

Nobody answered.

Then Evan whispered, “Because maybe the test wasn't about you.”

Daniela turned.

“What?”

Evan pointed to the patient identification number.

“I've seen that format before. One of my old clients used the same laboratory.”

He took the paper.

“The patient number is generated when someone first registers. If this was really Daniela's record, there should be earlier entries under the same number.”

Martin searched the archived emails.

One result appeared.

An invoice.

Same laboratory.

Same account.

Different patient number.

But the patient name was hidden in the scanned preview.

Martin opened it.

The file was password protected.

Adrian stared at the screen.

“I know the password.”

Daniela looked at him.

“How?”

“My mother uses the same password for everything.”

He entered it.

The file opened.

Daniela saw the name.

Not hers.

A woman named Rachel Mercer.

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

Daniela turned toward her.

“You know her.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“Who is Rachel Mercer?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Daniela understood.

“The woman at the hotel?”

Vanessa nodded.

Daniela looked back at Adrian.

His silence answered the rest.

But the laboratory report still didn't make sense.

“Why did Celeste have medical documents for both of us?”

Adrian's voice cracked.

“I don't know.”

Daniela looked at Rachel's report.

Then hers.

Same month.

Same laboratory.

Same corporate billing account.

Martin placed the two documents side by side.

“They're related.”

“How?”

“I don't know yet.”

Daniela noticed a code at the bottom of Rachel's report.

The same code appeared on hers.

She pointed.

“What is that?”

Martin searched the laboratory abbreviation.

His expression changed.

Daniela felt her stomach drop.

“What?”

Before he could answer, Adrian's phone began ringing.

Celeste.

He rejected it.

She called again.

Rejected.

Then Daniela's phone rang.

Celeste.

Daniela answered.

Nobody spoke for two seconds.

Then Celeste said, “Put Adrian on.”

“No.”

“Daniela, you have no idea what you're looking at.”

“Then explain it.”

Silence.

Daniela looked directly at Adrian.

“Who is Rachel Mercer?”

Celeste inhaled.

“Where did you hear that name?”

“Your files.”

“You need to give Adrian the box and walk away.”

Daniela almost smiled.

“You told me to leave your house. Now you're telling me to walk away from my own name?”

“This is bigger than you understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

Celeste's voice became quiet.

“Ask Adrian why he went to that laboratory.”

Daniela's eyes moved toward her husband.

Adrian looked terrified.

“You went there?”

He didn't answer.

“Adrian.”

Celeste continued through the phone.

“He went twice.”

Adrian grabbed for Daniela's phone.

Martin blocked him.

“Don't.”

Daniela stepped backward.

“What was the test?”

Celeste didn't answer.

“Tell me.”

A pause.

Then:

“Ask your husband.”

The call ended.

Daniela lowered the phone.

Adrian stared at her.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Martin's laptop chimed.

A new email.

Unknown sender.

Subject:

MARCH 17 — COMPLETE RESULTS.

Martin opened it.

One attachment.

Three pages.

He downloaded the file.

The first page was Daniela's report.

The second belonged to Rachel Mercer.

Then Martin opened the third.

His expression went completely blank.

Daniela stepped toward him.

“What is it?”

Martin did not answer.

She reached for the laptop.

Adrian suddenly moved.

“Daniela, don't.”

She stopped.

It was not a request.

It was panic.

“Why?”

Adrian's face collapsed.

Because he recognized the third name.

Daniela turned the laptop toward herself.

May you like

The page loaded.

And at the top of the final laboratory report was the name of someone Daniela had believed was dead.
