Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Saw Everything

The front door opened.

Slowly.

Not pushed.

Not forced.

Opened from the inside.

I stood frozen beside my car.

Every instinct told me to run.

But my feet refused to move.

Because I needed answers.

And because somewhere inside that house was the truth about my son.

A figure stepped into the doorway.

A woman.

She was in her late 30s.

Dark hair pulled back.

Tired eyes.

She wore a simple gray jacket and jeans.

She didn’t look dangerous.

She looked terrified.

“Daniel?”

I didn’t answer.

My hand moved toward my phone.

“Who are you?”

She looked over her shoulder.

Then back at me.

“My name is Claire Walker.”

The same name from the phone call.

The woman who said she was there when Ethan was attacked.

The woman who knew about the garage.

“You were inside?”

She nodded.

“I’ve been inside for ten minutes.”

My stomach tightened.

“How did you get in?”

Her expression changed.

Like she didn’t want to answer.

“Your father gave me a key.”

I stared at her.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

That made no sense.

My father had just told me to leave.

My father was afraid.

But this woman had access to his house.

“Why?”

Claire looked at the garage.

“Because he knew this day would come.”

I stepped closer.

“Stop talking in riddles.”

My voice was sharper than I intended.

“My son is in a hospital because people around my father decided he was expendable.”

Her face changed when I said that.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I know.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

She looked down.

“I tried to stop it.”

“But you didn’t.”

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“No.”

The answer came quietly.

And somehow that angered me more.

“Why?”

Claire looked at the house.

Then whispered:

“Because Mark had someone watching me too.”

I stopped.

“Mark?”

She nodded.

“Mark Dalton.”

The name felt poisonous now.

“Who are you to him?”

She hesitated.

Then reached into her jacket.

She pulled out an old photograph.

She held it toward me.

I almost didn’t take it.

But when I saw the image…

I did.

It showed my father.

Mark.

And Claire.

Standing together outside an office building.

Years ago.

“What is this?”

Claire swallowed.

“I worked for your father.”

I looked at her.

“When?”

“Before you knew anything about the company.”

The pieces started moving.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“What was Carter Holdings really?”

Claire looked away.

“Not what your father told you.”

I waited.

She took a breath.

“Your father’s company wasn’t failing.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

“What?”

“It was being destroyed.”

“By Mark?”

She nodded.

“He had access to everything. Financial records. Private files. Client information.”

“Why didn’t my father stop him?”

“Because Mark threatened him.”

“With what?”

Claire looked directly at me.

“With you.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“Mark knew your father’s weakness.”

“My father’s weakness was me?”

“No.”

Her voice became softer.

“Your father’s weakness was that he loved you.”

I looked away.

For years, I thought my father didn’t trust me.

That he kept me away because he didn’t think I was capable.

But maybe there was another reason.

Maybe he was trying to keep me out of something dangerous.

Claire walked toward the house.

“Come inside.”

I hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because someone else is already here.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

She looked toward the upstairs window.

“He followed you.”

My entire body went still.

“Who?”

Before she answered, the lights inside the house flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then everything went dark.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t move.”

The darkness swallowed the room.

I heard footsteps.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone was walking through the hallway.

Slowly.

Carefully.

I whispered:

“How many people are in here?”

Claire didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I reached for my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

I looked toward the doorway.

A shadow moved.

Someone was coming closer.

Claire leaned toward me.

“Daniel…”

“What?”

Her voice shook.

“The person inside this house…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“Who?”

She looked terrified.

“He’s the reason your son was attacked.”

My heart slammed against my chest.

The footsteps stopped.

Only a few feet away.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A familiar voice.

“Daniel.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

“Dad?”

The lights turned back on.

My father stood in the hallway.

But he wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind him.

A man I recognized from the video.

Mark Dalton.

My father looked at me.

His face was full of fear.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Daniel, listen to me.”

I stepped backward.

“You knew.”

My father closed his eyes.

“Not everything.”

“You knew Ethan was in danger.”

“I knew someone was trying to use him.”

“And you did nothing?”

My father looked broken.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Protect me?”

I pointed toward the door.

“My son almost died.”

Mark stepped forward.

“You’re making a mistake.”

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to speak.”

His expression hardened.

For the first time, I saw the man behind the mask.

Not a family friend.

Not a businessman.

A threat.

Claire moved closer to me.

“Daniel, don’t let him control this conversation.”

Mark looked at her.

“You should have stayed away.”

Claire’s face went pale.

“You destroyed enough lives.”

Mark smiled.

“You still don’t understand what you’re protecting.”

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then my father walked toward the table.

He placed something on it.

A small envelope.

The same type of envelope from the video.

My heart stopped.

“Before you open this,” my father said, “you need to know something.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He looked at Mark.

Then back at me.

“Ethan didn’t find the evidence.”

A silence filled the room.

“Someone put it where he would find it.”

I felt the air disappear.

“What?”

My father’s voice dropped.

“The person who attacked Ethan wasn’t trying to hide something from him.”

He looked directly at me.

“They were trying to force me to reveal something to you.”

I looked at the envelope.

My hands started shaking.

“What's inside?”

My father didn’t answer.

Because Mark did.

“The reason your mother died.”

Everything stopped.

My mother.

A name that hadn’t been spoken in years.

A memory buried under time.

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

And that was when I knew.

He had been hiding something much bigger than a business deal.

Something connected to my family.

Something connected to Ethan.

I reached for the envelope.

My fingers touched the paper.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

If you open that envelope, your father won’t be the only person who loses everything.

I looked up.

The front door behind Mark slowly began to open.

May you like

Someone was standing outside.

Someone who should have been dead for twelve years.
