Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath Bellissimo

The voice that called my name did not belong to anyone inside the restaurant.

"Maya."

Quiet.

Cold.

Familiar.

But impossible.

I turned toward the entrance.

A man stood just outside the open door.

Late forties.

Dark coat.

Expressionless face.

He wasn't looking at Luca.

He wasn't looking at the employees.

He was looking directly at me.

Every instinct in my body told me to step back.

Luca moved first.

He stepped between us.

And that was the moment I realized something.

Luca Moretti wasn't afraid of many things.

But he was afraid of this man.

"Leave," Luca said.

The man's mouth curved slightly.

"I only came to talk."

"No."

One word.

Sharp.

Final.

The entire restaurant became silent.

The stranger looked past Luca.

At me.

"Maya Ellison."

Hearing my full name from his mouth made my skin crawl.

"You don't know me," I said.

The man smiled.

"Your mother said you would say that."

My heart stopped.

"What did you say?"

Luca's expression changed instantly.

"Enough."

The stranger ignored him.

"Your mother spent years hiding the truth from you."

My fingers tightened around the old letter.

"Who are you?"

The man took one step forward.

Then Luca moved.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

But everyone in the room noticed.

Because suddenly, the air changed.

"Take one more step," Luca said quietly.

The stranger stopped.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Two powerful people.

Two completely different kinds of danger.

And somehow, I was standing between them.

Then the stranger laughed softly.

"You still protect her."

Luca's eyes narrowed.

"You should leave while you still can."

The man looked at me one last time.

"This isn't over, Maya."

Then he turned and walked away.

The door closed.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Luca.

"What was that?"

He didn't answer.

"Luca."

Still nothing.

My patience disappeared.

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You don't get to do that."

His eyes moved to mine.

"Do what?"

"Act like I'm a child who can't handle the truth."

A silence followed.

Then I placed the letter on the table.

"My mother wrote that I was in danger."

Luca said nothing.

"That man knew my name."

Nothing.

"He knew my mother."

His jaw tightened.

"Tell me what is happening."

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then he looked around the restaurant.

At the employees.

At the customers.

At the place my mother had spent years building.

"Not here."

I frowned.

"Where?"

"Somewhere safe."

I almost laughed.

"Safe?"

I pointed toward the door.

"That man walked into my workplace and knew exactly who I was."

A pause.

"And you're telling me somewhere else is safer?"

Luca didn't react.

But his silence told me enough.

Something bigger was happening.

Something he had been trying to keep away from me.

"Who was he?"

Luca finally answered.

"Anthony Russo."

The name meant nothing.

But the way Luca said it did.

"Who is Anthony Russo?"

Luca looked at the letter.

"Someone who believes your mother left something behind."

"What?"

He hesitated.

Then:

"Something that could destroy him."

I stared at him.

"My mother had something that could destroy a man like that?"

"Yes."

"What was it?"

Luca didn't answer.

And that made me angry.

"You keep doing that."

"Doing what?"

"Giving me half the truth."

His expression softened slightly.

"Maya."

"No."

I shook my head.

"I spent my whole life thinking my mother was just a woman who worked too hard and worried too much."

My voice became quieter.

"Now I find out she had secrets, dangerous people looking for me, and you standing here acting like you knew her better than I did."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they were true.

Luca looked away.

For the first time, he looked guilty.

"I should have found you sooner."

I froze.

"What?"

He didn't answer.

"What does that mean?"

He looked back at me.

"I promised your mother I would protect you."

A chill moved through me.

"And you failed?"

His silence was painful.

I understood.

Years had passed.

My mother was gone.

And Luca Moretti was carrying something he couldn't fix.

Before I could say anything else, Daniel appeared from the kitchen.

"Maya."

I turned.

"What?"

He looked nervous.

More nervous than before.

"There is something you need to see."

I frowned.

"Another secret?"

He didn't smile.

"No."

He held out an old folder.

"This was hidden in the office."

Luca immediately looked at it.

"Where did you find that?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Behind the old wall panel."

The words made Luca go still.

"What wall panel?"

"The one behind the old wine cabinet."

For the first time, Luca looked genuinely shocked.

I noticed.

And so did Daniel.

"What?"

Luca walked toward him.

"Who opened it?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I did."

"When?"

"This morning."

Luca took the folder.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like it was dangerous.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Because I didn't know what I found."

I stepped closer.

"What is inside?"

Neither man answered.

That was becoming a pattern.

I reached for the folder.

Luca stopped me.

"Maya."

His voice was serious.

"Before you open this, understand something."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Your mother didn't hide this because she didn't trust you."

A pause.

"She hid it because she loved you."

Those words hurt more than I expected.

I took the folder.

Inside was a collection of documents.

Old photographs.

Financial records.

And one picture that made my hands shake.

My mother.

Standing beside Luca.

Not years ago as strangers.

But together.

Smiling.

Happy.

Like family.

I looked at him.

"You loved my mother."

It wasn't a question.

Luca didn't deny it.

"We loved each other."

The room went silent.

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

"My whole life..."

I looked at the photograph.

"My whole life, I thought I knew who my mother was."

Luca lowered his eyes.

"You knew the person she wanted you to know."

"And the rest?"

He looked toward the window.

"The rest was the reason she was taken from you."

My breath stopped.

"What did you say?"

Luca immediately regretted the words.

But it was too late.

"Taken?"

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"My mother wasn't just sick?"

Silence.

"Luca."

His face changed.

And that was the answer.

My hands started shaking.

"Tell me."

He looked at me.

"Your mother didn't die because of an illness."

Everything inside me went cold.

I couldn't speak.

All those years.

All those explanations.

All those memories of hospital rooms and whispered conversations.

A lie?

A shadow moved outside the window.

Luca noticed first.

His eyes locked onto the street.

Then he grabbed my arm.

"Get down."

The sound came one second later.

Glass shattered.

Everyone screamed.

The restaurant exploded into chaos.

Luca pulled me behind the counter as people dropped to the floor.

My heart was pounding.

My ears were ringing.

I couldn't understand what was happening.

Then Luca reached into his jacket.

Not for a phone.

Not for money.

For a weapon.

And that was the moment I realized the rumors were true.

The man standing beside me wasn't just a businessman.

He was exactly who everyone feared.

The lights went out.

A phone vibrated in Luca's pocket.

He looked at the screen.

His face turned completely cold.

May you like

Because the message contained only four words.

"She knows the truth."
