Chapter 6 - What They Hid in My Son's Gift Bag

We returned to Emily's apartment with two agents.

Noah ran straight to me.

I held him longer than usual.

For that moment, the investigation disappeared.

The affairs disappeared.

The money disappeared.

There was only my son.

He whispered, "Can we sleep here tonight?"

"Yes."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

Lauren placed the gift bag on the dining table.

It was navy blue with silver tissue paper.

Exactly the one I'd bought.

Inside was nothing except a small black device taped beneath the cardboard base.

Hale examined it.

"Tracker."

I stared.

"Someone tracked us?"

"Likely."

"Since when?"

"We'll need to examine the device."

Lauren looked sick.

"Daniel knew where we were the whole time."

Maybe.

Or Caldwell did.

Or someone else.

Hale removed the tracker and sealed it.

Then he found a second object.

A microSD card.

Tiny.

Almost invisible beneath the folded cardboard.

On it, written in silver marker:

RACHEL.

Hale wouldn't let me insert it into a personal device.

A forensic technician brought an isolated laptop.

The card contained one video.

No date.

No title.

We played it.

Daniel appeared on screen.

My breath stopped.

He was sitting in what looked like the apartment we'd just searched.

No uniform.

No medals.

Just a gray shirt.

He looked exhausted.

Then he began speaking.

"Rachel, if you're watching this, things have gone wrong."

Lauren whispered, "When was this recorded?"

Daniel continued.

"I don't know what you've been told. I don't know who gave you this card. But before you decide I'm the only person responsible, you need to understand something."

I almost turned it off.

Another manipulation.

Another story.

But Hale gestured to keep watching.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

"Yes, I lied to you."

My jaw tightened.

"Yes, I lied to Lauren."

She crossed her arms.

"At least he's consistent."

Daniel continued.

"And yes, I used Rachel's identity to create Mercer Strategic Holdings."

There it was.

A confession.

Hale immediately asked the technician to duplicate the file.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

"I didn't create it to steal money."

I laughed bitterly.

Of course.

"I created it because Caldwell told me I had no choice."

Hale's expression hardened.

Daniel described a contracting arrangement.

Years earlier, after returning from deployment, he had discovered suspicious billing involving civilian vendors.

He reported it informally to Caldwell.

Instead of investigating, Caldwell showed Daniel that one of the companies had already been registered using my personal information.

Daniel claimed Caldwell had stolen copies of our tax documents from an administrative system.

"He told me if I pushed, Rachel would take the fall."

I wanted to believe nothing he said.

But the terror in his face looked real.

Then he admitted his first unforgivable choice.

Instead of telling me, he cooperated.

He signed documents.

Moved money.

Maintained the fake company.

Helped conceal transactions.

"At first I told myself I was protecting you."

His voice cracked.

"Then I was protecting my career."

That sounded like Daniel.

Too painfully like him.

"After that, I was protecting myself."

Lauren looked away.

Daniel admitted meeting her.

He admitted lying about our marriage.

"I wanted a place where nobody knew what I'd become."

Lauren whispered, "You used me as an escape."

Daniel continued.

"I told Lauren Rachel and I were divorced because the truth would have destroyed the only part of my life that didn't feel contaminated."

My anger sharpened.

Not justification.

Explanation.

There was a difference.

"I planned to leave Rachel after the promotion."

Noah was in the other room.

Thank God.

"I told myself she would be safer if she were legally separated from me before Caldwell moved the final money."

That didn't match the fake property documents.

Daniel knew it.

His next words addressed them.

"The house transfer was Caldwell."

He held up a copy.

"I didn't authorize this."

Thomas had said Daniel brought the paperwork.

Had he?

Or had Caldwell used Daniel's name too?

My certainty cracked.

Daniel continued.

"But the custody petition was mine."

There was the truth again.

Cruel and direct.

"I was afraid Rachel would expose everything and take Noah away."

My eyes filled.

He had been willing to destroy my reputation to keep our son.

That wasn't protection.

It was possession.

"I am not asking you to forgive me."

Good.

"Don't."

Lauren glanced at me.

Daniel leaned toward the camera.

"I'm telling you because Caldwell is leaving tonight."

Hale immediately checked the flight.

Daniel continued.

"The twenty-three million dollars is supposed to move at midnight. The destination account is controlled through Portugal."

He named a bank.

Hale wrote rapidly.

"If Caldwell believes Rachel has evidence, he'll try to make her disappear legally before he ever touches her physically."

I felt cold.

"Arrest. Psychiatric hold. Fraud accusation. Anything that makes her unbelievable."

Emily whispered, "That's why Daniel called me."

Then Daniel said something that silenced us.

"Evelyn Park has the original ledger."

Hale froze.

"The ledger shows every payment. Every officer. Every company."

Daniel looked off-camera.

A sound.

Someone approaching.

He hurried.

"Rachel, the tracker in Noah's bag wasn't placed there to watch you."

Hale leaned forward.

"It was placed there so I could find the bag."

I frowned.

Daniel continued.

"I hid this card because I knew you'd bring the plaque."

My chest tightened.

He had known.

"I heard your call to the office. I told Petty Officer Lewis to let you reach the outer gate."

So even our surprise had been part of his plan.

"I needed you outside the secure area because Caldwell watches everyone inside."

Daniel swallowed.

"I thought I could give you evidence without him seeing."

But then Harris told me about Lauren.

Daniel hadn't planned that.

His worlds collided accidentally.

"I know what today looked like."

Daniel's eyes dropped.

"It looked like you brought our son to celebrate me and found another woman in my place beside me."

My eyes burned.

"That part was exactly what it looked like."

Lauren shut her eyes.

Daniel whispered, "I'm sorry."

Then his expression changed.

Fear.

"The card contains one more file."

The video ended.

The technician checked.

A password-protected archive.

Filename:

CALDWELL_FINAL.

Password hint:

THE FIRST THING NOAH EVER CALLED ME.

I knew it.

"Dada."

The archive opened.

Inside were banking records.

Audio recordings.

Emails.

And one live transfer instruction scheduled for midnight.

Twenty-three million dollars.

Beneficiary approvals.

Daniel.

Caldwell.

Three civilian contractors.

And one name that made Hale swear aloud.

Deputy Director William Crane.

Hale's former supervisor.

The same person Evelyn had tried to report.

This wasn't one corrupt admiral.

It was a network.

Hale called his superiors.

Not Crane.

Someone above him.

Within minutes, the apartment filled with urgency.

Phones.

Orders.

Evidence preservation.

Banking freezes.

International alerts.

For the first time all day, I felt something shift.

We were no longer running from Daniel's secrets.

We had them.

Then Thomas called.

"Rachel."

"I'm here."

"You need to know something."

"What?"

"The forged house transfer was just filed electronically."

My heart stopped.

"When?"

"Three minutes ago."

"Can you stop it?"

"I'm trying."

"Who filed it?"

Thomas hesitated.

"The submitting attorney."

"Who?"

He said a name I didn't recognize.

Emily did.

Her face went white.

"That's Dad's lawyer."

I stared at her.

Our father had been dead for six years.

"Emily."

She backed away from the table.

"What?"

"Why does a dead man's lawyer have my property documents?"

Before she could answer, someone knocked on the apartment door.

Three slow knocks.

Every agent in the room went silent.

Hale drew his weapon.

"Who is it?"

A man's voice answered from the hallway.

"Daniel Mercer."

My entire body froze.

He spoke again.

"Rachel, don't open the door."

A pause.

Then footsteps sounded behind him.

May you like

Daniel's voice became urgent.

"Because Caldwell followed me here."
