Chapter 4 - Adrian’s Secret

Elena read the sentence until the letters lost meaning.

WE HAVE TO FINISH THIS TONIGHT.

“Adrian wrote this?”

Detective Bell nodded.

“He admits the handwriting is his.”

Elena gripped the table.

“What did he mean?”

“He says he doesn’t remember writing it.”

“That is convenient.”

“He says Natalie frequently left sticky notes on his desk and asked him to add instructions.”

“What kind of instructions?”

“Business tasks.”

“And this?”

“We’re verifying.”

Elena stood.

“I want to see him.”

This time, police allowed it.

Adrian sat alone in an interview room.

No suit.

No polished confidence.

Just jeans, a wrinkled shirt, and a man who had not slept.

Elena remained standing.

“What did you finish?”

His eyes lifted.

“What?”

“The note.”

His face tightened.

“I don’t know.”

“Try harder.”

“I am.”

“WE HAVE TO FINISH THIS TONIGHT.”

Adrian covered his mouth.

Then something shifted in his eyes.

“Wait.”

Elena’s heartbeat rose.

“What?”

“The Patterson deal.”

“What?”

“Natalie brought me a financing packet Friday night.”

“Friday.”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That signatures had to be finished before Monday.”

“And you wrote the note?”

“I think so.”

“You think?”

“I was leaving the office. I remember writing something on the front of the folder.”

“What folder?”

“Blue.”

Detective Chen, watching from behind the glass, entered.

“What was inside?”

“Loan documents.”

“Did you read them?”

“Not all of them.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“Of course not.”

Adrian flinched.

Chen continued.

“Was Grant Lowell involved?”

“Yes.”

Elena stared.

“You knew him.”

“Through work.”

“You transferred him eighty thousand dollars.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Investment.”

“What investment?”

“Private biotech fund.”

Chen leaned forward.

“Did Natalie recommend it?”

“Yes.”

The pattern became clearer.

Natalie controlled paperwork.

Natalie knew Adrian’s finances.

Natalie had access to his signatures.

Natalie knew about Sofia.

Natalie had access to Elena’s home.

But one question remained.

“Why Sofia?” Elena asked.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“If she wanted money, there were easier ways.”

His face went still.

Then Elena saw it.

A secret.

“Tell me.”

“Elena.”

“What did you hide?”

He looked at Detective Chen.

Then down at the table.

“Natalie told me she was pregnant.”

Elena’s knees nearly gave out.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“With your child?”

“She said it was mine.”

Elena pressed both palms against the table.

“You got her pregnant.”

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“She refused a paternity test.”

Elena laughed once.

It sounded terrible.

“So while Sofia was dying, you were celebrating your replacement family.”

“No.”

“That’s what you were doing at the hotel.”

“No. We were fighting.”

“About what?”

“She wanted me to leave you.”

“And?”

“I told her I wouldn’t.”

Elena stared at him.

Adrian’s voice cracked.

“I told her the affair was over.”

“When?”

“Sunday night.”

The timeline clicked.

Sunday.

The same night Natalie visited Sofia.

“What time?”

“Around seven.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Natalie arrived at Elena’s apartment at approximately 8:30.

Less than ninety minutes after Adrian supposedly ended the affair.

“What did she say?”

“She screamed.”

“About me?”

“You. Sofia. Everything.”

“What about Sofia?”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“She said Sofia was the reason I would never leave.”

Elena’s blood went cold.

“Exactly what did she say?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You do.”

He swallowed.

“She said, ‘If you didn’t have that little girl, you’d have left her already.’”

Silence.

Detective Chen left immediately.

Elena remained.

“You knew she said that.”

“I didn’t think—”

“Stop saying that.”

“I didn’t think she would hurt her.”

“You gave a furious woman the code to our home.”

“I forgot she had it.”

“You forgot?”

“I’m sorry.”

“You keep apologizing after every choice.”

Adrian’s eyes filled.

“I destroyed everything.”

“Yes.”

He did not argue.

Police issued a nationwide alert for Natalie Price.

Her face appeared on television.

Her phone was found in a roadside trash bin.

Her rental car contained Sofia’s bracelet, drops of blood, three thousand dollars in cash, and a second phone.

That phone changed the case.

It contained hundreds of messages between Natalie and Grant Lowell.

Most were financial.

Some were personal.

Then detectives found one thread deleted but recoverable.

NATALIE: The policy is active.

GRANT: He signed?

NATALIE: He signs whatever I put in front of him.

GRANT: And the wife?

NATALIE: Working on it.

GRANT: Don’t get emotional.

NATALIE: I’m done waiting.

Elena felt physically sick when Chen showed her.

“What does ‘working on it’ mean?”

“We’re investigating.”

Then came another message.

NATALIE: The kid is sick anyway.

GRANT: Do nothing stupid.

NATALIE: If she goes tonight, everything changes.

The room became silent.

Elena could not cry.

She had used every tear she possessed.

“What did she give Sofia?”

“Midazolam.”

“Why?”

“We think she wanted to make Sofia appear sleepier so you would delay seeking emergency care.”

“I called the ambulance anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Did that save her?”

Chen’s eyes softened.

“We can’t know.”

Elena looked away.

That uncertainty would haunt her forever.

Maybe Sofia could never have survived the infection.

Maybe she might have.

Maybe Natalie stole thirty critical minutes.

Maybe one hour.

Maybe nothing.

Grief could survive on a maybe for a lifetime.

But the police were not finished.

They found a second insurance policy.

This one was not on Sofia.

It was on Elena.

Five million dollars.

Beneficiary: Adrian Mendoza.

Opened six weeks earlier.

Again signed by Adrian.

Again processed through Grant Lowell.

Elena stared at the document.

“You think they were going to kill me.”

“We believe Natalie and Lowell were planning something.”

“And Adrian?”

“We still have no evidence he knowingly participated.”

Elena almost hated that answer.

Because if Adrian had been part of it, hating him would have been simpler.

Instead, he had been careless.

Faithless.

Selfish.

A man whose arrogance gave dangerous people access to his family.

It was harder to classify.

Two days later, police arrested Grant Lowell at an airport.

He was carrying a passport, cash, and a flash drive.

Natalie remained missing.

Grant refused to talk.

Until detectives played him the recovered messages.

Then he asked for a deal.

Elena sat beside Marisol when Chen called.

“He says Natalie had a plan.”

Elena tightened her grip on the phone.

“What plan?”

“To make your death look accidental.”

Marisol whispered a curse.

“How?”

“Medication.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“She planned to drug you after Sofia’s funeral.”

A chill spread through Elena.

“There wasn’t going to be a funeral.”

“Apparently Natalie didn’t know that.”

“What else?”

“She believed Adrian would inherit Sofia’s policy and yours.”

“And she would have him.”

“That appears to have been the expectation.”

Elena stood and walked to the window.

“Where is she?”

“Lowell claims he doesn’t know.”

The next morning, Elena decided Sofia deserved a memorial.

Not a funeral.

Something small.

A garden near the lake where Sofia loved feeding ducks.

Marisol helped arrange flowers.

Adrian asked permission to attend.

Elena almost refused.

Then she remembered Sofia running into his arms.

Whatever Adrian had become, Sofia had loved him.

So Elena said yes.

The memorial began at sunset.

Twenty-two people gathered.

Adrian stood far from Elena.

He never approached.

He placed one heart-shaped waffle on a plate beneath Sofia’s photograph.

Elena nearly broke when she saw it.

Then Detective Chen arrived.

She walked quickly toward Elena.

“We need to leave.”

“What happened?”

Chen glanced toward the parking lot.

“They found Natalie.”

Elena’s pulse stopped.

“Where?”

Chen’s gaze moved past her shoulder.

Marisol turned.

Adrian looked up.

A woman in a dark coat was walking toward the memorial.

Blonde hair.

Thin face.

Empty hands.

Natalie.

She stopped twenty feet away.

May you like

Then she looked directly at Elena and said:

“I came to tell you what Adrian did.”
