Chapter 4 - The Father’s Hidden Battle

The mansion had always been full of voices.
For decades, the Hale estate had carried the sounds of a family living.
The laughter of children running through the halls.
The footsteps of Richard coming home late from work.
The music Isabella’s mother played on quiet Sunday mornings.
The conversations that filled the dining room during holidays.
But that night, the silence felt different.
It was not the silence of peace.
It was the silence after a storm.
Everyone stood frozen after hearing the recording.
Vivian.
Marcus.
Richard.
And Isabella.
The truth had finally been spoken out loud.
Not through rumors.
Not through suspicion.
Not through accusations.
Through their own voices.
Vivian was the first to move.
She reached for the recorder.
But Isabella immediately picked it up.
“Don’t.”
One word.
Calm.
Controlled.
But powerful enough to stop her.
Vivian stared at her.
“You think this proves something?”
Isabella raised an eyebrow.
“Doesn’t it?”
Vivian forced a laugh.
“You recorded a private conversation.”
“No.”
Isabella shook her head.
“You admitted your plan.”
“That could be edited.”
“Then we can let professionals examine it.”
The confidence on Vivian’s face weakened.
Because she knew something.
People who were innocent wanted investigations.
People who were guilty wanted silence.
Marcus looked between them.
“You’re really going to destroy your own family?”
Isabella turned toward him.
“My family was destroyed the moment you decided my father was something you could use.”
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“I understand perfectly.”
She stepped closer.
“You saw an injured man.”
“You saw someone who needed help.”
“You saw an opportunity.”
Marcus looked away.
For the first time, he had no arrogant response.
Because Isabella was right.
That was exactly what happened.
When Richard’s accident happened, everyone around him changed.
Employees who once feared him suddenly questioned his authority.
Business partners became impatient.
People who smiled in front of him started discussing his future behind closed doors.
But Vivian and Marcus did something worse.
They did not wait for him to recover.
They started replacing him.
Piece by piece.
Decision by decision.
Until Richard Hale, the man who once controlled every room he entered, became a prisoner inside his own home.
Richard looked down at his hands.
“I should have known.”
Isabella immediately turned toward him.
“Dad.”
“I should have seen it.”
His voice was filled with regret.
“I built a company. I negotiated billion-dollar contracts. I knew when someone was lying.”
He looked around the mansion.
“But I couldn’t see it happening in my own house.”
Isabella sat beside him.
“Because you trusted them.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Because I wanted to believe I wasn’t alone.”
That sentence hurt her.
Because she understood.
After losing Isabella’s mother, Richard had spent years trying to rebuild his life.
And Vivian came at the exact moment he was vulnerable.
She knew how to appear supportive.
She knew when to say the right words.
She knew how to become necessary.
But necessity was not love.
And control was not care.
Isabella placed a hand over her father’s.
“You’re not alone anymore.”
Richard looked at her.
And for a moment, he looked like the father she remembered.
Not the broken man on the floor.
Not the businessman who lost control of his empire.
Just her father.
But the moment did not last.
Because Vivian suddenly spoke.
“You’re making a huge mistake.”
Everyone looked at her.
Her expression had changed.
The kindness was gone.
The fake concern was gone.
Only anger remained.
“You think you’ve won because you have a recording?”
She stepped closer.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”
Isabella studied her.
“Is that supposed to scare me?”
Vivian smiled.
“No.”
She lowered her voice.
“It’s supposed to warn you.”
Marcus looked nervous.
“Vivian…”
She ignored him.
“Your father is not the only person who has secrets.”
Richard looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Vivian smiled.
A smile that made Isabella uncomfortable.
Because it was not the smile of someone confident.
It was the smile of someone preparing a final move.
“You really think you know everything?”
Isabella remained silent.
Vivian continued.
“You investigated finances.”
“You found documents.”
“You recorded conversations.”
She nodded slowly.
“Very impressive.”
Then she looked at Richard.
“But did you ask your father why he never told you the truth about the accident?”
Richard froze.
Isabella noticed immediately.
“Dad?”
Richard looked away.
And that small movement changed everything.
Because Isabella knew her father.
She knew when he was hiding something.
“Why did you look away?”
Richard said nothing.
“Dad.”
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t want you involved.”
The room became quiet again.
“Involved in what?”
Richard hesitated.
Vivian smiled.
“There it is.”
Isabella looked at her.
“Explain.”
Vivian walked toward the fireplace.
“Your father’s accident wasn’t just a random event.”
Richard’s face became tense.
“Stop.”
“No.”
Vivian looked at him.
“You wanted to protect her.”
She laughed softly.
“But now she’s already here.”
Isabella’s heart started beating faster.
She looked at Richard.
“What happened?”
Richard stayed silent.
For several seconds.
Then he finally spoke.
“The brakes failed.”
Isabella stared at him.
“What?”
“The car.”
His voice was quiet.
“The brakes failed before the accident.”
A cold feeling moved through her.
“And you knew?”
Richard nodded.
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Richard looked ashamed.
“Because I didn’t know who to trust.”
Vivian crossed her arms.
“And because he was afraid.”
Richard looked at her.
“I was afraid someone would come after you.”
Isabella felt something break inside her.
Her father had not ignored the danger.
He had been trying to protect her.
“You thought they would hurt me?”
Richard nodded.
“After the accident, strange things started happening.”
“Documents disappeared.”
“Employees changed their stories.”
“People who worked with me for twenty years suddenly stopped answering calls.”
He looked at Vivian.
“And then she became the only person around me.”
Isabella understood.
The accident was not the beginning.
It was the opening move.
Someone wanted Richard weakened.
Someone wanted him isolated.
Someone wanted him dependent.
And Vivian stepped into that space.
But there was one thing Isabella still did not understand.
“Why stay?”
The question was directed at Richard.
Not Vivian.
“Why didn’t you leave her?”
Richard looked down.
The answer took several seconds.
“Because I thought I could handle it.”
He gave a bitter smile.
“I thought I was smarter than them.”
Isabella looked at him.
“I was wrong.”
The honesty surprised her.
Because Richard Hale had spent his entire life being the person everyone depended on.
Admitting failure was difficult.
But now he was finally doing it.
“I signed things I shouldn’t have signed.”
“I trusted people I shouldn’t have trusted.”
“And I pushed away the one person who would have protected me.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“You.”
Isabella looked away.
Six years of pain.
Six years of believing her father chose someone else.
Six years of carrying anger.
And suddenly she realized they had both been victims of the same person.
Vivian watched the emotional moment carefully.
Then she interrupted.
“Beautiful.”
Everyone looked at her.
“But useless.”
She walked toward the table.
“You still don’t have control of the company.”
Isabella looked at her.
“That’s what you’re worried about?”
Vivian smiled.
“Of course.”
She pointed around.
“This house.”
“The business.”
“The accounts.”
“Everything.”
She leaned closer.
“You may have exposed a conversation.”
“But legally?”
She smiled.
“You’re still too late.”
Isabella did not react.
Because she had expected this.
Actually, she was counting on it.
“You’re right.”
Vivian looked surprised.
“What?”
Isabella picked up another folder.
“You’re right.”
She placed it on the table.
“I don’t have everything yet.”
Marcus watched carefully.
“But you made one mistake.”
Vivian stared.
“What mistake?”
Isabella opened the folder.
“You believed the only person fighting back was me.”
Inside were documents.
Not copies.
Original documents.
Richard’s eyes widened.
“Where did you get those?”
Isabella looked at him.
“The nurse.”
Vivian’s expression changed.
“What nurse?”
“The one who contacted me.”
A pause.
“She wasn’t just your father’s nurse.”
Isabella looked at Vivian.
“She was my mother’s closest friend.”
The room went silent.
Vivian stepped back.
Impossible.
That was the expression on her face.
Because there was one person she had forgotten.
One person who had watched everything.
One person who knew Richard’s condition.
One person who knew what happened before the accident.
And that person had finally decided to speak.
Isabella closed the folder.
“This isn’t over.”
She looked directly at Vivian.
“Actually…”
A small pause.
“This is where it starts.”

And for the first time since Isabella entered the mansion...
Vivian Hale looked afraid.
