Chapter 8 - The Truth Daniel Left Behind

Daniel.

I stared at the name on Sole’s phone.

My fingers went numb.

For a few seconds, I convinced myself it had to be fake.

A trick.

Someone using his name.

Someone trying to scare me.

Because Daniel had been gone for fifteen years.

Because my family had built an entire story around his disappearance.

Because dead people didn’t send messages.

Then the phone vibrated again.

A second message appeared.

Emily, if you are reading this, they found the key.

I looked at Claire.

The color had disappeared from her face.

She stepped closer.

"What did he say?"

I handed her the phone.

She read the message.

Then she covered her mouth.

"No."

My father looked over her shoulder.

The moment he saw the name, he took a step back.

Like the past had physically returned and pushed him away.

"How is this possible?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Except maybe one person.

Daniel.

I looked at Sole’s empty room.

My daughter was missing.

And the only person who could explain what was happening was someone my family had spent fifteen years pretending never existed.

I typed a message.

My hands shook.

Where is my daughter?

The reply came immediately.

Too quickly.

Like he had been waiting.

She is safe.

I felt a wave of anger.

Safe?

My daughter had disappeared from her bedroom.

A stranger had entered my house.

My entire family had been lying to me.

And this person wanted me to believe everything was fine.

I typed again.

Who are you?

The answer appeared.

You already know.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

Your father knows where she is.

I looked up.

My father was standing near the stairs.

He looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not angry.

Terrified.

"Dad."

He didn’t answer.

"Where is Sole?"

His eyes moved toward the floor.

And that was enough.

"You know."

He swallowed.

"Emily..."

"No."

My voice broke.

"Not anymore."

I walked toward him.

"You don’t get to protect me from the truth."

His face collapsed.

Because maybe he finally understood.

Every secret he kept had not saved me.

It had only made me trust him less.

"Where is my daughter?"

He sat down slowly.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother took her."

The room went silent.

Claire stepped forward.

"What?"

My father looked destroyed.

"She knew Sole had the recordings."

I felt my stomach twist.

"When?"

"Before dinner."

My eyes widened.

"She knew?"

He nodded.

"She knew Sole had been collecting evidence."

I thought about my daughter’s notebook.

The hidden files.

The videos.

The way she had looked scared every time my mother appeared.

My daughter had been fighting a battle alone.

And I had no idea.

"Why would Mom take her?"

My father looked at the phone.

"Because Sole found the one thing your mother has been afraid of."

"What?"

He looked at me.

"The original evidence."

Claire went still.

"The evidence Daniel hid."

My mind went back to the key.

The old key sitting on my kitchen table.

The place where Daniel hid everything.

"What does the key open?"

My father closed his eyes.

"The old storage building."

I frowned.

"What storage building?"

"The one your mother destroyed the records from."

Claire shook her head.

"No."

My father looked at her.

"Yes."

She stepped back.

"I thought Daniel moved everything."

"He did."

My father looked at me.

"He moved it before they came for him."

The room became silent.

"Before they came for him?"

My father looked away.

That was the answer.

Someone had come for Daniel.

Someone had wanted him gone.

And everyone who knew the truth had been afraid ever since.

My phone vibrated.

Another message.

Daniel.

Emily, listen carefully. Do not go to your mother.

I read it again.

Then the next message appeared.

She is taking Sole to the place where it started.

I looked at Claire.

"The storage building."

She nodded slowly.

"But why would she take Sole there?"

My father answered.

"Because your daughter knows something."

I felt anger rise.

"She is thirteen."

"I know."

"She is a child."

"I know."

"Then why is everyone treating her like she’s the only person who can save them?"

Nobody answered.

Because that was the truth.

A thirteen-year-old girl had discovered what adults had spent years hiding.

I grabbed my jacket.

"We’re going."

My father stood.

"No."

I looked at him.

"No?"

"It’s dangerous."

I almost laughed.

"Dangerous?"

I pointed toward Sole’s empty room.

"My daughter is missing."

He looked at me.

"You don’t understand."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"I understand perfectly."

I picked up the key from the table.

"You were afraid."

My father stayed silent.

"Claire was afraid."

She looked down.

"My mother was afraid."

I held up the key.

"But I’m done being afraid."

For the first time, nobody tried to stop me.

Because they knew.

There was no going back.

We left the house together.

Me.

Claire.

My father.

The three people connected to a secret that destroyed our family.

The drive was silent.

Nobody talked.

Everyone was trapped in their own memories.

When we arrived, I immediately recognized the building.

It was old.

Abandoned.

The windows were covered.

The door was rusted.

But someone had been there recently.

The lock was new.

My father looked at it.

"They knew we would come."

I inserted the key.

It turned easily.

Too easily.

The door opened.

Inside was a room full of boxes.

Documents.

Photos.

Old recordings.

Everything my family had spent fifteen years hiding.

Claire walked inside first.

Then she stopped.

Because on the wall was a photograph.

A photograph of Daniel.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was my mother.

And underneath the picture was a date.

The same date Daniel disappeared.

I walked closer.

There was writing beneath it.

Three words.

She was there.

My father stepped back.

Claire whispered:

"Emily..."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She pointed toward another table.

On it was a folder.

My name was written across the front.

I reached for it.

But before I touched it, my phone rang.

Daniel.

Not a message.

A call.

I answered immediately.

"Where is my daughter?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

Older.

Tired.

But real.

"Emily."

I closed my eyes.

Because after fifteen years...

I was finally hearing Daniel.

"I’m sorry."

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Where is Sole?"

A pause.

Then he said:

"She’s with me."

My heart stopped.

"Where?"

His voice became quieter.

"Somewhere your mother will never find."

I looked around the room.

At the evidence.

At the secrets.

At the life my family had stolen from me.

Then Daniel said something that made every person in that room freeze.

"Emily, there is something you need to know about Sole."

I held my breath.

"What?"

Silence.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

"She isn't the first child your mother tried to silence."
