Chapter 6 - The Secret My Mother Tried To Bury

A federal agent entered the courtroom and said:
"Victor Hale was not running away. He was being protected."
When Claire Cross heard those words, she realized the enemy she had been fighting was never hiding.
He had been hiding in plain sight.
But the agent carried one final document:
"Authorization request signed by Evelyn Cross."
Claire finally understood her mother’s betrayal went deeper than anyone imagined.
The courtroom felt smaller.
Like the walls were closing in.
Everyone was looking at my mother.
Not me.
Not Ryan.
Her.
For the first time since the trial began, Evelyn Cross had no prepared answer.
No confident accusation.
No carefully chosen words.
Just silence.
The federal agent stepped forward.
"My name is Agent Marcus Cole. I am with the Financial Crimes Division."
The judge nodded.
"Explain what you have."
Agent Cole placed a folder on the evidence table.
"We have been investigating the disappearance of Victor Hale for eighteen months."
The prosecutor immediately turned.
"Disappearance?"
Agent Cole nodded.
"Victor Hale was reported missing after leaving the country under suspicious circumstances."
My attorney looked confused.
"But why is this connected to this case?"
Agent Cole looked toward me.
"Because Victor Hale was not hiding from investigators."
A pause.
"He was hiding from someone else."
The room became silent.
My eyes moved toward Ryan.
Then my mother.
Because I already knew.
The person who controlled everything was never the person standing in front of the cameras.
It was the person behind them.
Agent Cole opened the folder.
"Victor Hale was responsible for creating multiple shell companies that transferred money from Cross Meridian Systems."
The prosecutor looked at Ryan.
"We already suspected that."
Agent Cole shook his head.
"You suspected the theft."
He looked at me.
"We discovered the reason."
I waited.
"The money wasn't stolen for personal gain."
Nobody moved.
"It was used to fund illegal technology transfers."
The courtroom erupted.
The judge immediately called for order.
My father’s company wasn't just being attacked.
It was being used.
And Dad knew.
He had discovered something much bigger than fraud.
He had discovered betrayal.
Agent Cole continued.
"Michael Cross attempted to report this activity."
He looked at the evidence.
"But someone stopped him."
My stomach tightened.
The prosecutor asked:
"Who?"
Agent Cole looked toward my mother.
"Evelyn Cross."
The room went silent.
My mother's face lost all color.
"No."
Her voice was barely audible.
"No, that's not what happened."
Agent Cole opened another document.
"This authorization request allowed Victor Hale access to specific company accounts."
He placed it on the table.
"The signature belongs to Evelyn Cross."
My mother shook her head.
"I never signed that."
Agent Cole looked at her.
"Then perhaps you can explain why it was sent from your personal email account."
Ryan stared at her.
"Mom..."
She looked at him.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of losing money.
Not fear of losing the company.
Fear of losing control.
The prosecutor walked closer.
"Mrs. Cross, did you work with Victor Hale?"
My mother looked down.
No answer.
The judge leaned forward.
"You need to answer."
Slowly, she lifted her head.
"I knew Victor."
Everyone waited.
"How?"
She swallowed.
"He approached me after Michael became sick."
My chest tightened.
My father was dying.
And while I was fighting overseas.
While I was protecting strangers.
My mother was making deals behind his back.
The prosecutor continued.
"What did he want?"
She closed her eyes.
"Information."
"About what?"
"Michael's plans."
The courtroom became completely silent.
My father had trusted her.
And she had betrayed him.
But then my mother said something nobody expected.
"I refused."
Everyone looked surprised.
Even me.
She continued.
"I was angry at Michael."
Her voice cracked.
"But I never wanted him hurt."
I stared at her.
A thousand emotions moved through me.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
Because the worst part was that I didn't know if I believed her.
Agent Cole stepped forward.
"We believe that is partially true."
The prosecutor looked at him.
"Partially?"
Agent Cole nodded.
"Mrs. Cross did not order Michael Cross's death."
My mother exhaled.
But then he continued.
"However, she helped cover up what happened afterward."
The air disappeared from the room.
My mother looked down.
And that was the confession.
Not spoken.
But understood.
The prosecutor turned.
"Cover up what?"
Agent Cole opened another file.
"The night Michael Cross died, there was another person inside the office."
Everyone knew who.
Ryan.
My brother looked around.
"That's impossible."
Agent Cole pressed a button.
The courtroom monitor turned on.
Security footage appeared.
A hallway.
A timestamp.
The night of my father's death.
Ryan walked toward the office.
Then another figure appeared.
My mother.
She followed him.
The courtroom watched.
Nobody breathed.
The video showed them entering.
Then thirty minutes later...
Ryan came out alone.
The prosecutor froze the footage.
"Where is Mrs. Cross?"
Nobody answered.
The video continued.
Five minutes later.
My mother exited.
Holding something.
A small black device.
I recognized it immediately.
A storage drive.
My father's backup drive.
The one that disappeared after his death.
My hands tightened.
"She had it."
Daniel whispered.
I couldn't answer.
Because I was watching my family destroy everything my father built.
The prosecutor turned toward my mother.
"You took the drive."
She looked broken.
"I was scared."
"Of what?"
She looked at me.
And for a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
"I was scared because Ryan told me..."
She stopped.
The judge looked at her.
"Told you what?"
My mother looked toward Ryan.
Ryan's expression changed.
"Don't."
She ignored him.
"He told me Claire was going to destroy the family."
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
I spent my entire life protecting them.
And they convinced her I was the threat.
The prosecutor asked:
"What was on the drive?"
My mother didn't answer.
Agent Cole did.
"The evidence Michael collected against Victor Hale."
A pause.
"And the person who helped Victor."
The judge looked at the monitor.
"Can this drive be recovered?"
Agent Cole nodded.
"We believe so."
My heart started racing.
Because that drive could finally answer everything.
Who forged the will.
Who moved the money.
Who planned the attack.
Who destroyed my reputation.
The agent received a message on his phone.
He looked at the screen.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
The judge noticed.
"Agent Cole?"
He slowly looked up.
"The drive has been recovered."
Everyone waited.
"But there is a problem."
The prosecutor frowned.
"What problem?"
Agent Cole looked at me.
"The files were opened this morning."
My blood ran cold.
"By who?"
He turned the phone around.
A name appeared on the screen.
ACCESS GRANTED:
CLAIRE CROSS.
The entire courtroom turned toward me.
My mother covered her mouth.
Ryan smiled.
A small, confident smile.
Because he thought he had found the final weapon.
Daniel looked at me.
"Claire..."
I stared at the screen.
I had never accessed that drive.
I had never seen those files.
Someone had used my identity.
Someone had prepared this moment.
The judge demanded silence.
"Agent Cole, are you saying the defendant accessed stolen evidence?"
Agent Cole hesitated.
Then he answered:
"No."
He looked at the second line on the screen.
"Because the access came from a device that was registered to someone else."
Everyone waited.
May you like
Agent Cole's face turned serious.
"The device belonged to..."
