Chapter 5 - The Archive That Exposed Everything

The message on Daniel's phone remained on the screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It was only a few words.

But those words changed everything.

"I know you found the archive. You should have stayed away."

Daniel's hand began to shake.

I noticed it immediately.

This was not the reaction of a man receiving a random threat.

This was the reaction of someone seeing a ghost.

"Who sent that?"

My voice cut through the silence.

Daniel locked his phone.

Too quickly.

That made me more suspicious.

"Daniel."

He looked at me.

For a moment, I saw the same fear in his eyes that my mother had when she saw him standing at the door.

"You need to leave."

I stared at him.

"Leave?"

He nodded.

"Right now."

I almost couldn't believe him.

"After everything I just found out, you think you can tell me to leave?"

"No."

His voice softened.

"I am telling you because I know what happens when those files are exposed."

The chairman stepped forward.

"Who sent the message?"

Daniel looked at him.

"I don't know."

The chairman's expression hardened.

"That's a lie."

Daniel didn't answer.

And that silence told me something.

He knew.

Maybe not who sent it.

But he knew why they were afraid.

I looked around at everyone.

My mother.

My father.

The chairman.

Ethan.

Everyone had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

I held my daughter tighter.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at me.

"I am tired of being the person everyone tries to protect by lying to."

My voice was calm.

But inside, I felt like I was falling apart.

"I spent years believing my father abandoned me."

I looked at Daniel.

"I spent years believing my husband loved me."

Then I looked at Ethan.

"And apparently both were lies."

Ethan immediately stepped forward.

"Olivia, don't compare me to him."

I looked at him.

"Why not?"

He stopped.

"You lied to me."

"I made mistakes."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You made choices."

That silence hurt him.

Good.

Because I had spent years hurting quietly.

The chairman walked toward the driveway.

"We need to get inside."

Everyone looked at him.

"The archive was broken into."

Daniel's face changed.

"What?"

"The security team found the door open."

The chairman looked at him.

"And whoever entered knew exactly where to look."

My mother whispered:

"The original files..."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

I looked between them.

"What are the original files?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

"Proof."

"Proof of what?"

He looked at Ethan.

"That everything happening today started years ago."

My stomach tightened.

Ethan laughed nervously.

"You're making this sound like some conspiracy."

Daniel looked at him.

"You know exactly what this is."

"I don't."

"You do."

Their eyes met.

And in that moment, I understood something.

Ethan wasn't just scared because his secret marriage strategy had been exposed.

He was scared because there was something bigger.

Something involving him.

Something involving my family.

Something involving the reason he chose me.

The chairman motioned toward the house.

"Everyone inside."

Nobody argued.

Even Ethan.

That frightened me more than anything.

Because Ethan never followed anyone's orders.

Not mine.

Not anyone else's.

But now?

He walked inside quietly.

Like he knew what was waiting.

The inside of the mansion felt different.

It was strange.

I had lived there for five years.

I knew every room.

Every hallway.

Every corner.

But that day, it felt like I was walking through a stranger's house.

Because maybe I was.

Maybe I had never truly known anything.

The chairman led us into Ethan's office.

I had rarely been inside.

He always said it was private.

Now I understood why.

The room was organized perfectly.

Too perfectly.

Everything had a place.

Everything was controlled.

Daniel walked toward the bookshelf.

"The archive entrance was hidden here."

I stared at him.

"You knew about this?"

He nodded.

"Your father created a private archive before his death."

He touched one of the books.

"It contained everything he discovered."

The chairman looked at me.

"Your father spent years investigating people around you."

"People around me?"

Daniel nodded.

"He believed someone close to you would eventually try to take what belonged to you."

My eyes moved slowly toward Ethan.

He looked away.

Again.

The bookshelf shifted.

Behind it was a hidden door.

My heart started beating faster.

A secret room.

Inside my husband's office.

The place where he kept his private information.

The chairman entered a code.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

No windows.

No decorations.

Only shelves filled with boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Files.

Daniel walked in first.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

"What?"

The chairman followed his eyes.

A shelf was empty.

A single space.

Where something had been removed.

"The original file is gone."

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Ethan.

His face was impossible to read.

But then I noticed something.

His hands.

They were shaking.

"Did you take it?"

I asked.

He looked at me.

"No."

Too fast.

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Daniel walked toward another shelf.

There was one file left.

Small.

Black.

With my name written on it.

Olivia Hart.

My breathing stopped.

"Why is my name on that?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel picked it up.

But before he opened it, my mother suddenly spoke.

"Don't."

Everyone turned.

Her voice was full of fear.

Not for herself.

For me.

"Mom?"

She stepped closer.

"Please."

I stared at her.

"What is inside?"

She looked at the file.

Then at me.

"Something I should have told you years ago."

My fingers tightened.

"Then tell me now."

My mother started crying.

"Your father didn't disappear because he was hiding."

She looked at Daniel.

"He disappeared because he found out who was trying to destroy your life."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then the lights in the archive room suddenly went out.

Complete darkness.

Someone gasped.

My baby began crying.

I held her close.

"Everyone stay where you are."

The chairman's voice was firm.

But I heard something else.

A sound.

A small sound.

From inside the room.

A footstep.

Someone else was there.

Daniel whispered:

"No..."

I heard him move.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

A voice I had never heard before.

But everyone else recognized.

"Daniel."

The room froze.

The voice continued.

"You should have let Olivia live without knowing."

A phone screen suddenly lit up.

The light revealed Daniel's face.

He was completely pale.

May you like

Because the person speaking was not supposed to be alive.

And then the voice said my father's name.
