Chapter 6 - The Choice Richard Never Made

Elise had commanded troops under fire.
She had made decisions with aircraft in the air and lives depending on seconds.
But nothing required more discipline than sitting in the passenger seat while Marcus drove back toward the Grand Ashford.
Andrew’s phone went straight to voicemail.
Claire’s too.
Elise called hotel security.
The manager answered.
“General Voss?”
“Find Andrew and Claire Voss. Now.”
A pause.
“They left.”
Elise’s stomach dropped.
“When?”
“About ten minutes ago.”
“With whom?”
“We’re checking cameras.”
“Lock the footage. Call local law enforcement. Do not approach anyone connected to them.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Richard’s car appeared behind them.
Marcus looked in the mirror.
“He’s following.”
“Let him.”
Five minutes later, the hotel manager called back.
“General.”
“Go.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Voss exited through the service corridor.”
“Voluntarily?”
“It appears Mrs. Voss was speaking with an older man.”
“Description.”
“Early sixties. Gray hair. Dark suit.”
Hart.
“Vehicle?”
“Black SUV. Plate obscured.”
“Direction?”
“East.”
Elise switched lines.
“Marcus.”
“Already pushing it out.”
Richard called.
Elise almost ignored him.
Then answered.
“What?”
“I know where Hart may go.”
“Where?”
Silence.
“Richard.”
“The old Voss plant.”
“Which one?”
“Riverton.”
Marcus heard.
He changed lanes immediately.
Elise said, “Why there?”
“Because that’s where I met him.”
“How long have you used him?”
“Elise—”
“How long?”
“Twenty-eight years.”
She closed her eyes.
Hart had been part of the family machinery before Elise was thrown out.
“Did he hurt Mom?”
“No.”
“Did you order him to?”
“No!”
For once, Richard sounded genuinely horrified.
“I never told him to touch Margaret.”
“You told him I was a problem.”
Silence.
“What did Hart Protocol mean?”
Richard breathed.
“If you ever used your position against the company, he was supposed to expose you.”
“With what?”
“Fabricated financial records.”
Elise felt nausea.
“You planned to frame me.”
“I never activated it.”
“You prepared it.”
“I was angry.”
“For twenty-one years?”
No answer.
“Why is Hart acting now?”
“I don’t know.”
Elise did.
Hart had built his own insurance policy.
Someone like that did not simply serve Richard.
He collected leverage.
And now the ledger was exposed.
The old plant stood abandoned beside the river.
Police units stopped two blocks away at Elise’s instruction.
She did not want Hart panicking.
Federal teams were en route.
Marcus turned to her.
“You are not going inside.”
Elise opened the door.
“That’s an order I don’t remember giving you authority to issue.”
“I had to try.”
Richard arrived seconds later.
Elise turned on him.
“Stay here.”
“I know the building.”
“So does Hart.”
“He’ll expect you.”
“He’ll expect you too.”
Richard looked toward the plant.
“My grandson is inside.”
The words sounded strange coming from him.
Human.
Elise studied his face.
“Then for once, do exactly what I tell you.”
Richard nodded.
They entered through a side door.
Rust.
Concrete.
Dark corridors.
Richard whispered directions.
“Main office upstairs.”
Marcus pointed.
Fresh footprints in dust.
Three sets.
They followed.
A voice echoed.
“Elise.”
Hart.
Speakers.
“You brought Richard.”
Elise said nothing.
Hart continued.
“Predictable.”
Richard shouted, “Samuel!”
A laugh.
“You always did need other people to clean up your family.”
Richard went pale.
Elise whispered, “He wants you angry.”
Richard shut his mouth.
They reached the main floor.
Andrew sat tied to a chair.
Claire beside him.
Alive.
Elise exhaled once.
Hart stood behind them with a handgun.
Older than the photograph Marcus had pulled.
Calm.
Gray.
Almost ordinary.
That was what made him dangerous.
“General.”
Elise raised empty hands.
“They have nothing to do with this.”
Hart smiled.
“They’re Vosses. Everyone has something to do with it.”
Andrew said, “Aunt Elise, don’t—”
Hart pressed the gun near his shoulder.
Elise stopped.
“What do you want?”
“The ledger.”
“It’s already copied.”
“I assumed.”
“Then this changes nothing.”
“It changes what Richard loses.”
Richard stepped forward.
“Take me.”
Hart laughed.
“No.”
“I hired you.”
“You used me.”
“I paid you.”
“You paid me to carry your sins where you couldn’t see them.”
Richard’s face tightened.
Hart looked at Elise.
“Your father built a fascinating system. Everyone feared losing access to him. Money. Jobs. Inheritance. Approval.”
Elise said, “You’re not his victim.”
“No.”
Hart smiled.
“I’m his best student.”
That sentence visibly hurt Richard.
Hart continued.
“But then you appeared.”
Elise watched the gun.
“You were supposed to fail.”
Richard looked at her.
Hart laughed softly.
“He monitored you, you know.”
“I know.”
“He celebrated every setback.”
Richard whispered, “That’s not true.”
Hart ignored him.
“When you were passed over for promotion the first time, he opened a bottle of Scotch.”
Elise felt nothing.
That surprised her.
Twenty years ago, it would have broken something.
Now it simply confirmed what she already knew.
Hart continued.
“When you received your first star, he smashed the glass.”
Richard shouted, “Enough!”
Hart grinned.
“There he is.”
Elise kept her eyes on Andrew.
“Let them go.”
Hart shook his head.
“You don’t understand the purpose.”
“What purpose?”
“Richard spent decades proving people belong to whoever controls what they fear losing.”
Hart gestured toward Andrew.
“Let’s test his philosophy.”
Richard stared.
Hart moved the gun slightly.
“One grandson.”
Then toward Elise.
“One daughter.”
He looked at Richard.
“You choose.”
Richard’s face emptied.
Hart smiled.
“Who walks out?”
Andrew whispered, “Grandpa, don’t.”
Elise said sharply, “Andrew.”
Hart laughed.
“This is perfect.”
Richard looked from Andrew to Elise.
For perhaps the first time in his life, Richard Voss had no power except a moral choice.
No money could purchase the right answer.
No threat could delegate it.
No employee could take responsibility afterward.
His mouth opened.
Elise watched him.
She expected the old Richard.
Bloodline.
Grandson.
Legacy.
The son of the son who stayed.
Richard whispered, “Elise.”
Her stomach tightened.
Hart raised an eyebrow.
“Your daughter?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He stepped forward.
“Me.”
Hart’s smile disappeared.
Richard continued.
“You want someone? Take me.”
“Not an option.”
“Then make it one.”
“Richard.”
“I built this.”
Hart went still.
Richard looked at Elise.
“I did.”
The admission carried across the empty plant.
“All of it.”
Elise stared.
Richard’s eyes filled.
“I told myself I was protecting the family.”
His voice cracked.
“I was protecting myself.”
Hart said, “Touching.”
Richard ignored him.
“I blamed you because you left and survived.”
Elise felt tears rise.
“You proved I wasn’t necessary.”
There it was.
The truth beneath everything.
Richard took another step.
“And I hated you for it.”
Hart shouted, “Stop.”
Richard did not.
“I kept your mother from you.”
“Richard.”
“I used Thomas.”
“Stop moving.”
“I watched Andrew grow afraid of me.”
Hart’s gun shifted toward him.
Elise saw Marcus move in the shadows.
Not yet.
Richard continued.
“I did every terrible thing because I thought being feared meant I mattered.”
Hart aimed at his chest.
Richard looked at Elise.
“I was wrong.”
The gun fired.
Claire screamed.
Richard fell.
Marcus fired once.
Hart’s weapon dropped.
Federal agents flooded the room.
Elise ran to Richard.
Blood spread across his shirt.
He was conscious.
Barely.
Andrew shouted.
Elise pressed both hands over the wound.
“Stay with me.”
Richard looked at her.
“You came back.”
“Don’t talk.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Save your strength.”
“For all of it.”
Elise’s hands shook.
Richard whispered, “Your mother…”
“I know.”
“She loved you.”
“I know.”
He closed his eyes.
Elise shouted for the medic.
His pulse weakened beneath her fingers.
“Richard!”
His eyes opened once more.
“Elise.”
“What?”
“There’s another letter.”
Her breath stopped.
“What letter?”
“In my safe.”
“Where?”
His eyes drifted.
May you like
“From your mother.”
Then the monitors attached by the medic began screaming.
