Chapter 14 - The Door to Operating Room Seven

Everyone turned.
Lorenzo stood in the doorway.
He was unarmed.
Two federal officers lay unconscious in the corridor.
Adriano moved between him and Theo.
“How?”
Lorenzo looked exhausted.
“I didn't escape.”
The federal agent raised his weapon.
“Hands where I can see them.”
Lorenzo complied.
“Someone moved me.”
“What?”
“A transport order. Forged.”
Adriano understood.
One last mechanism from the old network.
Lorenzo had escaped the vehicle during an attack and come to the only place he believed Adriano would be.
“Who attacked?”
“I don't know.”
Luca, still recovering, identified the likely men.
Remnants of Marcus's trafficking organization.
They weren't trying to free Lorenzo.
They were trying to kill him before he testified.
Federal agents took Lorenzo back into protection.
The final conspiracy collapsed over the following week.
Marcus's remaining associates were arrested.
For the first time, there was no hidden name behind the hidden name.
No mysterious photograph.
No watcher in a corridor.
Just courtrooms.
Evidence.
Consequences.
Then Theo developed a postoperative infection.
Beatrice's nightmare returned instantly.
His fever climbed.
Dr. Anand ordered emergency treatment.
The infection had formed near the surgical site.
Theo might need another operation.
Beatrice sat beside him.
“No.”
Dr. Anand spoke gently.
“We caught it early.”
“He just started walking.”
“I know.”
“What happens?”
“We clean the site and protect the repaired tissue.”
Theo whispered, “Aunt Bea?”
She turned.
He was frightened.
She took his hand.
“I’m here.”
Adriano arrived minutes later.
Theo looked at him.
“You still have Sharky?”
Adriano pulled the stuffed shark from a bag.
“I've learned.”
Theo smiled weakly.
Surgery was scheduled that night.
This time there was no unpaid bill.
No conspiracy.
No fake nurse.
No hidden criminal plan.
But fear didn't care.
Beatrice stood outside Operating Room Seven and shook.
Adriano held her hand.
“You don't have to do that,” she whispered.
“I know.”
“You can let go.”
“I know.”
He didn't.
Hours passed.
Mara arrived.
Luca came despite doctor's orders.
Even Lorenzo, under guard, sent a handwritten note.
For Theo.
Beatrice didn't open it.
Not yet.
At 2:41 a.m., the operating room doors opened.
Dr. Anand emerged.
Beatrice stood.
“The infection is cleared.”
She exhaled.
“The repair remains intact.”
Mara cried.
“And his recovery?”
“Still promising.”
Beatrice leaned against Adriano.
This time she didn't apologize.
Theo returned to rehabilitation three weeks later.
He had lost some progress.
Not all.
He began again.
One step.
Then another.
Adriano's hearing approached.
He prepared Beatrice for the possibility that he might disappear from her life for a while.
“I don't want promises,” she said.
“I wasn't going to make one.”
“Good.”
“I was going to ask something.”
“What?”
“When this is finished, if I'm still here…”
He stopped.
She waited.
“Have dinner with me.”
Beatrice stared.
“You followed me to a hospital because you thought I was a spy.”
“I've had worse first dates.”
“That wasn't a date.”
“I know.”
“You accused me of betraying you.”
“Yes.”
“You tried to hand me money.”
“Yes.”
“You are terrible at this.”
“I am becoming aware.”
She smiled.
“Ask me after the hearing.”
The hearing came.
Adriano testified for six hours.
He admitted his participation in illegal enterprises.
He described his father's network.
He refused to minimize his own responsibility.
His cooperation, surrendered assets, lack of direct involvement in several of the most serious hidden crimes, and assistance dismantling the organization shaped the final disposition.
But he still faced consequences.
The judge began reading the decision.
Beatrice sat behind him.
Adriano did not turn around.
His hands remained still.

Then the judge said the words that would determine whether Adriano could walk out of that courtroom with her.
Beatrice stopped breathing as the sentence began...
