Chapter 3 - The Gala of Reckoning

Seventy-two hours later, the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle was bathed in warm golden light. The annual Pacific Military Appreciation Gala was in full swing. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, reflecting off the polished brass buttons of hundreds of high-ranking military officers, civilian contractors, and regional politicians.
Grant Brooks stood near the center of the ballroom in his immaculate Navy Mess Dress uniform, holding a glass of sparkling water. His posture was rigid, his smile strained. Over the past three days, he had tried calling Natalie fifty times. He had driven to their home, only to find the security gates locked and private security guards posted at the driveway.
Claire Dawson stood beside him in a stunning sapphire blue gown, whispering nervously into his ear.
"Grant, people are staring," Claire muttered, sipping her champagne. "Why hasn't the foundation released the quarter funds yet? My finance officer said our corporate accounts were frozen this afternoon by federal order."
"Keep your voice down," Grant hissed through clenched teeth, forcing a smile as a captain walked past. "Natalie is throwing a hysterical tantrum because she saw us at the base. She’s trying to flex her muscles, but she won't go public. She cares too much about her family's reputation. Once Admiral Harris hears my side of the story, this will all be classified as a domestic dispute."
"Are you sure?" Claire asked, her eyes darting across the room. "Because two NCIS agents were parked outside my office building this morning."
"I said quiet!" Grant commanded under his breath.
Suddenly, the ambient chatter of the ballroom died down. The heavy oak double doors at the main entrance swung open.
Natalie Brooks walked into the room.
She was radiant. She wore an elegant, floor-length emerald green satin gown that highlighted her striking posture. Her dark hair was styled in flawless Hollywood waves, and her expression was serene, regal, and entirely devoid of fear. Walking beside her was her brother Owen, accompanied by Rear Admiral William Harris—the Commander of Navy Region Northwest—and three uniformed JAG (Judge Advocate General) officers.
Grant’s stomach dropped into his boots.
Natalie didn't look like a disgraced, heartbroken wife. She looked like an executioner.
As the room watched, Natalie and Admiral Harris walked straight toward the elevated stage at the front of the ballroom. Admiral Harris stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Admiral Harris’s booming voice echoed across the quieted hall. "Before we begin our fundraising dinner tonight, I have an important official announcement regarding the ongoing partnership between Navy Region Northwest and the Bennett Harbor Foundation."
Grant took an involuntary step forward, his heart hammering violently against his ribs. "Sir—" he murmured, but an armed Master-at-Arms officer quietly stepped into his path, blocking his movement.
"For over a decade," Admiral Harris continued, his face grim, "the Bennett Harbor Foundation has been a beacon of integrity for our service members. Today, Mrs. Natalie Brooks presented my office and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service with comprehensive evidence of severe financial fraud, bribery, and conflict of interest involving defense contracting within our regional command."
A sharp collective gasp erupted across the ballroom. Guests began looking around in shock. Claire Dawson went deathly pale, dropping her champagne glass. It shattered loudly on the parquet floor.
"Effective immediately," Admiral Harris barked, "Commander Grant Brooks is relieved of his command at Naval Station Everett due to a loss of confidence. Furthermore, NCIS has initiated a full criminal investigation into Trident Logistics LLC and Dawson Defense Dynamics for wire fraud, embezzlement of philanthropic funds, and official misconduct."
The room descended into utter chaos. Whispers exploded like gunfire. Cameras from civilian media outlets—invited to cover the charity event—began flashing rapidly.
Grant stood frozen in the middle of the room, surrounded by his peers, his superiors, and the region's elite. His rank, his pride, his precious reputation—everything he had spent twenty years building—was obliterated in less than ninety seconds.
Natalie stepped up to the microphone. She looked directly at Grant, her voice clear, calm, and resonant.
"The Bennett Harbor Foundation was built on the belief that those who serve deserve absolute honesty, protection, and respect," Natalie said into the microphone. "We will be liquidating all assets recovered from this fraudulent scheme and redirecting every single dollar directly into housing funds for low-income navy families and single mothers."

She paused, offering a faint, cold smile that cut straight through Grant’s soul.
"True honor cannot be bought, Commander. And it certainly cannot be hidden behind a locked security gate."
