Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The screen continued playing.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The security monitor inside the hidden basement room showed a woman standing upstairs in Clara's house.
A woman facing the camera.
A woman who looked exactly like the person in the old photographs.
I stepped closer.
My hands became cold.
"No."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
The investigator looked at me.
"Mr. Bennett?"
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
"That's impossible."
The detective moved beside me.
"Do you know her?"
I swallowed.
"I knew her."
The woman on the screen slowly turned her head.
She was looking directly at the camera.
Directly at us.
Like she knew someone was watching.
Then the screen went black.
The basement became silent.
The investigator checked the monitor.
"Signal lost."
The detective immediately grabbed his radio.
"Secure the upstairs area. Nobody leaves the house."
I didn't move.
My mind was somewhere else.
Fifteen years earlier.
A funeral.
A closed casket.
A little girl holding my hand.
A promise I made to Clara.
I promised I would protect her.
And now I was standing in a hidden room beneath her house, discovering that everything I believed about her family was built on a lie.
The detective looked at me.
"Mr. Bennett."
I turned.
"Who was she?"
I looked at the old photographs on the table.
The woman standing beside Clara.
The woman everyone told me was gone.
"My wife."
Nobody spoke.
The investigator slowly lowered the file in his hand.
"Your wife?"
I nodded.
"Clara's mother."
The detective looked confused.
"Daniel said her mother died."
I stared at him.
"Everyone said that."
A long silence followed.
Then the detective asked the question I had been avoiding.
"Was she really dead?"
I didn't answer immediately.
Because I didn't know.
That was the worst part.
I remembered the funeral.
I remembered the empty feeling.
I remembered Clara asking me why her mother wasn't coming home.
But I never saw the body.
I never saw the truth.
I only saw what people wanted me to see.
The investigator opened another folder.
"Mr. Bennett."
I looked at him.
"You need to see this."
Inside was a collection of documents.
The first page was a medical report.
The second was a legal document.
The third was a photograph.
A photograph of my wife.
Taken three years after her supposed death.
I felt the room disappear around me.
"Where did you find this?"
The investigator pointed to the files.
"Inside the hidden room."
My fingers touched the photograph.
My wife.
Alive.
Standing somewhere I didn't recognize.
And beside her...
Was Daniel's father.
I looked up.
"No."
The detective noticed.
"You know him?"
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"How?"
I stared at the picture.
"Because he attended my wife's funeral."
Nobody spoke.
The pieces started connecting.
Daniel's family.
The hidden room.
The fake story.
The attack on Clara.
They weren't separate events.
They were connected.
The detective took the photograph.
"We need to bring everyone back for questioning."
I looked toward the stairs.
"Daniel knew."
The detective looked at me.
"You think he knew?"
"I think Daniel knows more than he admitted."
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked.
Unknown number.
A message.
I opened it.
One sentence.
DON'T TRUST DANIEL.
I looked at the detective.
"Can you trace it?"
He took my phone.
"Not yet."
Another message appeared.
This time with a photo.
My breath stopped.
It was Clara.
Inside the ICU.
Sleeping.
Taken from above.
Someone had been inside her room.
Someone had been watching her.
Below the picture was another message.
HE WAS NEVER YOUR ENEMY.
I stared.
"Who is 'he'?"
Nobody knew.
Then another message arrived.
A name.
THOMAS, ASK YOUR DAUGHTER ABOUT THE NIGHT HER MOTHER DISAPPEARED.
My heart tightened.
Because Clara knew.
Somehow, my daughter knew something about the woman I thought I lost.
We returned to the hospital immediately.
The entire drive, I didn't speak.
The detective sat beside me.
He kept looking at the files.
"You understand what this means?"
I looked out the window.
"It means someone has spent years building a lie."
"And your daughter was trying to expose it."
I nodded.
The hospital was already secured when we arrived.
Daniel was still there.
But something had changed.
He wasn't angry anymore.
He was waiting.
The moment he saw me, he stood.
"You found it."
I stopped.
"You knew."
Daniel looked down.
"I knew you would eventually."
His answer surprised me.
"Eventually?"
He looked at the floor.
"Clara always believed you would find the truth."
I walked closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His eyes became wet.
"Because I was afraid."
"Of what?"
Daniel looked toward the ICU.
"Of what would happen if they knew Clara talked to you."
The detective stepped forward.
"Who are they?"
Daniel didn't answer.
His father suddenly appeared from the hallway.
"Daniel."
One word.
But it carried a warning.
Daniel immediately became quiet.
I turned toward the older man.
"You lied to me."
He remained calm.
"I protected my family."
I stared at him.
"Your family attacked my daughter."
His expression didn't change.
"You don't understand."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"You don't understand."
The detective moved between us.
"Everyone needs to calm down."
But I wasn't interested in calm.
Not anymore.
I wanted answers.
I went to Clara's ICU room.
She was awake.
Her eyes moved toward me.
I sat beside her.
"Clara."
She looked at me.
"Dad."
Her voice was weak.
But she was there.
"I need you to tell me the truth."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I tried."
"I know."
I held her hand.
"Your mother."
Her entire expression changed.
Fear.
Pain.
Confusion.
"How did you know?"
I froze.
Because that question confirmed everything.
She knew.
"Clara."
She looked away.
"I wasn't supposed to tell anyone."
"Tell me what?"
She closed her eyes.
"My mother didn't die."
The words hit harder than I expected.
"Where is she?"
Clara started crying.
"I don't know."
"Then why did you hide this?"
"Because she made me promise."
"Promise what?"
Clara looked at the ICU door.
Then whispered:
"Never trust Daniel's family."
I felt my chest tighten.
"Why?"
She grabbed my hand.
"Because they weren't protecting me."
"Then what were they doing?"
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward Daniel.
And then she said something that changed everything.
"They were protecting my mother."
I stared at her.
"Your mother?"
Clara nodded.
"She wasn't running from them."
"She was hiding from someone else."
The room became silent.
"Who?"
Clara's face turned pale.
"Dad..."
"I'm here."
"You have to leave."
"What?"
"Now."
I stood.
"Why?"
Her eyes filled with terror.
"Because if she knows you're here..."
The ICU lights suddenly flickered.
The door behind me unlocked.
Slowly.
Clara stopped breathing.
I turned.
A shadow appeared outside the room.
Someone was standing there.
Someone who had been waiting.
The door opened.
May you like
And a familiar voice whispered my name...
"Thomas."
