Chapter 6 - The Night They Tried to Take Her

Grant directed Rebecca toward an underground delivery entrance on the hospital’s west side.
“My father used it when the wing was being built.”
“Will it be open?”
“If Barrett is moving people through the basement, yes.”
Daniel looked back.
“How do you know?”
Grant’s answer was simple.
“Because I used it for him.”
Rebecca did not waste time condemning him.
That could happen later.
They reached the hospital in fourteen minutes.
The loading gate stood open.
Too easy.
Rebecca hated it.
“They expect us,” she said.
Grant nodded.
“Probably.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then we call local police.”
“I already did.”
He blinked.
“When?”
“On the drive.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Because I sent them to the public entrance.”
Grant understood.
“Distraction.”
“Yes.”
Rebecca had also sent copies of Charles’s ledger to a federal contact at Fort Liberty and to the FBI Charlotte field office.
She did not know who could be trusted inside the hospital.
So she made sure the evidence existed outside it.
They entered through the loading area.
Grant knew the service corridors.
Daniel stayed close.
Rebecca told Eleanor to remain outside and coordinate with arriving police.
For once, Eleanor did not argue.
They reached the basement.
The corridor was empty.
Medical Records stood ahead.
Door open.
Rebecca stopped.
“Daniel stays here.”
“No.”
“That wasn’t a suggestion.”
“She’s my daughter.”
“And if this is a trap, somebody needs to remain outside it.”
Grant said, “I’ll go.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“You’re the reason they trust the trap.”
Grant accepted that.
Rebecca moved forward with him.
The records room was dark except for one lamp.
An empty wheelchair sat in the center.
Lily was not there.
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“Barrett!”
Nothing.
Then a speaker crackled overhead.
A calm male voice.
“Colonel Hale.”
Grant went pale.
Rebecca looked upward.
“Dr. Barrett.”
“I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.”
“I don’t.”
A soft laugh.
“You remind me of Charles.”
“Charles collected evidence.”
“And look where it got him.”
Grant stared upward.
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“You killed him.”
Barrett did not answer directly.
“Charles had opportunities to walk away.”
“So did Rachel Mercer?”
Silence.
Rebecca looked at Grant.
That silence was confirmation enough.
“Where is Lily?”
“Safe.”
“I’ll decide that.”
“Your daughter became involved in something she did not understand.”
“She was dragged into it by adults who did.”
“Perhaps.”
“I have the ledger.”
“I know.”
“What do you want?”
“The original.”
Rebecca smiled without warmth.
“You think I brought it?”
“You are practical.”
“I’m not stupid.”
Barrett sighed.
“That creates a difficulty.”
“Not for me.”
“For Lily.”
Rebecca clenched her jaw.
A side door opened.
Nolan Pierce entered.
The false Martin Voss.
He wore dark clothes now.
No hospital badge.
He held Lily by one arm.
She was frightened but standing.
No new injuries visible.
Rebecca’s entire focus narrowed.
“Let her go.”
Pierce smiled slightly.
Lily saw her mother.
“Mom.”
“I’m here.”
Pierce tightened his grip.
Rebecca’s voice became deadly calm.
“Take your hand off her.”
Grant stepped forward.
“Nolan.”
Pierce looked at him.
“You have become expensive.”
Grant swallowed.
“I’m done.”
“No one is done.”
Grant glanced at Rebecca.
Then back.
“Charles was right.”
Pierce smiled.
“Charles died confused.”
Rebecca said, “Did Barrett order it?”
Pierce’s eyes shifted.
Tiny.
But enough.
Rebecca stored the reaction.
“Interesting.”
Pierce frowned.
“You’re trying to make me talk.”
“No. You’re doing fine on your own.”
The overhead speaker crackled.
Barrett said, “Enough.”
Rebecca looked toward the ceiling.
“You’re hiding.”
“I’m supervising.”
“You’re afraid.”
A pause.
“Colonel, your military rank has no authority here.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Correct.”
Pierce seemed surprised.
She continued.
“But Lily is my daughter everywhere.”
“Give us the ledger.”
“No.”
Pierce moved Lily toward the side door.
Rebecca took one step.
He stopped.
“Don’t.”
Rebecca stopped.
She could hear movement outside.
Faint.
Daniel?
Police?
Security?
She needed seconds.
“Why Rachel?”
Pierce laughed.
“What?”
“You could have bribed her.”
“She refused.”
“Threatened her?”
“She refused.”
“So what did you do?”
Grant whispered, “Rebecca.”
She ignored him.
Pierce enjoyed control.
Men like him often enjoyed explaining it.
“She thought evidence made her powerful.”
“Where is she?”
Pierce’s smile faded.
“That was three years ago.”
Rebecca’s heart sank.
Then he added:
“And she still causes problems.”
Rebecca stared.
Still.
Present tense.
Rachel might be alive.
The speaker snapped.
“Nolan, stop talking.”
Pierce looked irritated.
Rebecca smiled slightly.
“Barrett sounds nervous.”
“Shut up.”
“He doesn’t trust you.”
Pierce tightened his grip on Lily.
Lily winced.
Rebecca’s body moved half an inch.
Pierce noticed.
“Don’t.”
“Then stop hurting her.”
“She’s fine.”
“She said that about Grant too.”
Pierce looked toward Grant.
That moment was enough.
Lily drove her heel backward into Pierce’s shin.
He cursed.
She pulled free.
Rebecca lunged forward.
Pierce reached.
Grant slammed into him from the side.
All three hit the floor.
“Run!” Rebecca shouted.
Lily ran.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
He caught her.
Pierce punched Grant and rolled.
Rebecca dragged Grant back.
Hospital security rushed in.
Not Caleb.
Different officers.
Behind them came Charlotte police.
Pierce reached for something inside his jacket.
Every officer shouted at once.
“Hands!”
“Don’t move!”
Pierce froze.
Slowly raised both hands.
He was arrested.
Rebecca went straight to Lily.
Her daughter wrapped both arms around her.
For several seconds Rebecca could not speak.
Lily buried her face against the black military jacket.
“I knew you’d come.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Always.”
Daniel joined them.
For one brief second, the three held each other.
Then Rebecca remembered Barrett.
“Where is he?”
Police searched.
Office.
Boardroom.
Security center.
Nothing.
Samuel Barrett was gone.
But he had made a mistake.
The hospital audio system had recorded portions of his conversation.
His voice.
His threats.
His references to Lily and Charles.
The ledger supplied the rest.
Caleb Morrison was found locked inside a maintenance room, bruised but alive.
Maria was discovered in an adjacent staff office after being shoved inside by Pierce.
She had a cut above one eyebrow.
She was furious.
Agent Reed was located in a private ambulance before it left hospital property.
Two men transporting him were arrested.
Reed survived.
By midnight, federal agents had taken over sections of the hospital.
Grant surrendered voluntarily.
Trevor was arrested at a hotel near the airport.
Eleanor gave a full statement.
Daniel did too.
Rebecca remained beside Lily.
At 2:13 a.m., Maria finally cleared her for discharge.
Lily changed into borrowed sweatpants and a sweatshirt.
Rebecca still wore her dress uniform.
It was no longer flawless.
One sleeve was wrinkled.
A button had been torn loose.
There was dust along one knee.
Lily noticed.
“You look terrible.”
Rebecca laughed for the first time all night.
“So do you.”
Lily smiled weakly.
“Thanks.”
Rebecca kissed her forehead.
They walked toward the elevator.
Daniel followed several steps behind.
Lily looked back.
“Dad?”
He stopped.
“Yes?”
“Are you coming?”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“If you want me to.”
Lily looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca let the decision belong to her.
Lily nodded.
“Come.”
Daniel joined them.
The elevator doors opened.
Agent Reed was being moved down the corridor in a wheelchair.
He looked exhausted.
But awake.
“Colonel.”
Rebecca approached.
“Agent Reed.”
“Hell of a family dinner.”
She almost smiled.
“Apparently.”
He held out a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a small memory card.
“What is it?”
“Recovered from Pierce.”
Rebecca looked closer.
“Contents?”
“We checked enough to know it matters.”
“What’s on it?”
“Video.”
“Of what?”
Reed looked at Lily.
Then at Daniel.
“Rachel Mercer.”
Daniel went still.
“Alive?”
“The recording was made eleven days ago.”
Grant, being escorted past by federal agents, overheard.
He stopped.
Rebecca looked at Reed.
“Where?”
“We’re working on that.”
Grant spoke.
“I know where.”
The agents stopped him.
Rebecca stared.
“You said you didn’t.”
“I didn’t know she was alive.”
“Then what do you know?”
Grant looked terrified.
“Pierce used to drive to a property outside Statesville.”
“What property?”
“An old rehabilitation center.”
“Owned by?”
Grant swallowed.
“The Hale Foundation.”
Agent Reed motioned to another agent.
Everything accelerated again.
Lily caught Rebecca’s hand.
“Mom.”
Rebecca turned.
“You don’t have to go.”
Rebecca looked down at her daughter.
For the first time that night, Lily wasn’t asking to be rescued.
She was giving her mother permission to leave.
Rebecca squeezed her hand.
“I’m not leaving you tonight.”
Reed nodded.
“We can handle Statesville.”
Rebecca trusted him.
At least for tonight.
They reached the lobby.
Police lights flashed through the glass.
Reporters had begun gathering outside.
Eleanor waited near the entrance.
She approached Lily slowly.
“I’m sorry.”
Lily stared at her grandmother.
Eleanor’s voice broke.
“I thought keeping secrets protected this family.”
Lily said nothing.
Eleanor continued.
“I was wrong.”
Rebecca watched her daughter.
Lily finally answered.
“I don’t know if I forgive you.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I understand.”
“But I’m glad you gave Mom my phone.”
Tears filled Eleanor’s eyes.
“So am I.”
Lily stepped closer and hugged her briefly.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But not a closed door.
Rebecca looked toward Daniel.
He looked destroyed.
He deserved part of that feeling.
But redemption, if it came, would not come through suffering.
It would come through truth.
They left the hospital at 3:06 a.m.
Rebecca put Lily in the passenger seat.
Daniel took the back.
She started the engine.
Her phone rang.
Agent Reed.
Rebecca answered.
“Reed?”
His voice sounded different.
Urgent.
“We reached the rehabilitation center.”
Rebecca looked at Lily.
“And?”
“We found Rachel Mercer.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca exhaled.
Then Reed said, “Colonel, there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Rachel says Barrett didn’t create the Circle.”
Rebecca’s hand tightened around the phone.
“Then who did?”
“She gave us a name.”
Rebecca waited.
Reed said it.
May you like
Daniel stopped breathing.
And Rebecca slowly turned toward her husband.
